Dark Star Orchestra on Tour

More than just a tribute band, the seven members of the Dark Star Orchestra are dedicated to the Grateful Dead live experience, best known for playing full setlists picked from their 2,000+ concerts. The Grateful Dead's live show is legendary, a catalog of improvisation traded and celebrated across decades. The Dark Star Orchestra re-creates the Dead's intra-band interplay and pastoral guitar soloing. Remarkably devoted and true to the source material, DSO tailors their arrangements, gear and tempos to the era of the evening. Some nights find the DSO creating original setlists, playing sets from the Jerry Garcia Band or even jamming with members of the Dead themselves.

Dark Star Orchestra in Concert

Formed in Chicago in 1997, Dark Star Orchestra provides generations of fans with the chance to experience entire Grateful Dead sets, song by song. Named after "Dark Star," a part of the Dead's set known for exploratory jams, DSO rose to national prominence in 1998 when Mike Gordon and John Fishman of Phish joined them for a performance of the Dead's 1983 Halloween show. DSO promptly became a touring sensation: At 2,800 shows and counting, DSO have played more shows than the Grateful Dead themselves. They ultimately enlisted keyboardist Rob Barraco of Phil Lesh and Friends, the Other Ones and the 2003 touring version of the Dead. The DSO have played Bonnaroo and Milwaukee's SummerFest, and they've been hosting their own annual fests for years - the Dark Star Jubilee in Ohio and the Jam in the Sand in Jamaica. Perhaps the most important honor for DSO, though, is enlisting actual members of the Grateful Dead, having performed on stage accompanied by Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, Donna Jean Godchaux, Vince Welnick and Tom Constanten. A 2018 show even found guitarist Jeff Mattson playing Jerry Garcia's custom-made guitar, "Wolf," which the Dead founder used for two decades.

  • The Long Strange Trip Continues

by Dead2 on 4/2/11Showbox at the Market - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

I've been a huge Deadhead for years. I was very reluctant to even see DSO. Why would I want to see a Dead cover band? I finally gave it a chance a couple of years ago, and I have to say that it's some of the most fun a Deadhead can have without Jerry. I've seen the band numerous times, in fact, I'm writing this review on the road in the middle of their West Coast tour. I really can't get enough of them. What a fantastic way to celebrate the music of the Dead. It's like going to see the Dead when they were on -- every night. If you like the Dead, boogieing down to your favorite tunes, and good vibes then do yourself a favor and see Dark Star Orchestra.

Wow. Wow. Wow. My first DSO show - I'm a newly-minted fan. Thanks for a great night!

amazing band at Seattle's best music venue! (indoor, Marymoor is best outdoor :0) )

  • As always

by lucelucy on 4/2/11Showbox at the Market - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

DSO filled my heart. This time it was Rob Barraco who really caught my attention. He grinned down at his keyboard with fingers splayed as if preparing to lead the damned into paradise. And then he did so.

  • Solid as always

by tedGT on 3/31/11The National - RichmondRating: 4 out of 5

I have seen DSO four times now, and while this wasn't the best show I have seen them perform, it was close. Everyone should see them at least once, although many will return for future shows. The venue was sold out, and although the National is not one of my favorite places to see a show (The NorVa in Norfolk,VA or the Tabernacle in Atlanta,GA are way cooler), it was great to relax on a Friday with a well performed Dead set. Jeff Matson is a killer, and has really meshed well with the group. Will hopefully see them again before the end of the year.

  • fantastic show

by bikerfishjohnny on 3/10/11The National - RichmondRating: 4 out of 5

This band does an excellent job of recreating the Grateful Dead experience... to a fault. No one really takes those psychedelic journeys anymore... so when they break into those extended instrumental "jazz explorations" the Dead were notorious for, some in the audience (especially the ADD types) are left scratching their heads... but it always comes back to something familiar and groovy! Again, if you miss the Dead, or never saw them... this is about as close as it gets to the real thing...

  • DSO was a real surprise

by Fred828606 on 3/8/11Sovereign Performing Arts Center - ReadingRating: 5 out of 5

I hadn't heard of DSO before. Quite frankly, I have not necessarily even been a GD fan. My son has taken to a lot of music from my era (funny how classic stuff keeps the appeal into new generations) and wanted to go to the show. We loved it. I would definitely see them again and hope they return to this venue. The crowd was cool - what I'd figure to be a typical laid back GD following ... music was bright, lively and had more depth than I thought would be the case. There were seven musicians, including two percussionists. Was a great show. If you're even the slightest fan of Grateful Dead music - Dark Star Orchestra is definitely worth checking out. A curious moment ... at one point during the second set, the fire alarm was going off. It ended up a false alarm, but I'm surprised security didn't have anyone evacuate the building. Granted, I didn't leave on my own either.

  • DSO was awesome!!

by JonnyLong on 3/8/11Sovereign Performing Arts Center - ReadingRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first time seeing DSO. The gig was unforgettable! The smaller venue was even more intiment and enjoyable...altough, the wall-of-sound's hard to beat :)

  • DSO are the greatest rock and roll band in alive

by gr8whtbuffalo on 3/8/11Sovereign Performing Arts Center - ReadingRating: 5 out of 5

No other band perform rock and roll as well as the Dark Star Orchestra.

  • Great Place ... Great Jam ... No Eats

by Wonkajam on 3/8/11Sovereign Performing Arts Center - ReadingRating: 5 out of 5

It was a perfect storm of high quality playing and singing. The band seemed up and focused. I was close enough to see the facial expressions of the players. There was good dialog between the members. I love Rob. Watching him just brings a smile to my face. No eats? What's up with Reading on a Sunday night? We tried a bunch on places near the venue and all were closed. Finally wound up at GNR (odd name for a Pizza place). At least they had some Dog Fish 60s on tap. Anyway great show. Hopefully they stop by the Vibes this summer.

    by NJ08008 on 2/7/11Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

What a great show to re play on such a rainy night in Georgia- from the acoustic set to the full electric show and an encore that still gives the shakes. Radio City 10/27/80 Sorry you could not have stayed for 2 nights !

  • absolutely spectacular!

One of the best shows I have ever been to, definitely the best show I've been to at Variety Playhouse!!

  • Dark Star Orchestra Rocked the House - As Usual!!!

by ChristineE on 2/7/11Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Tonite's show was from 1980 - Oregon..... No Donna Jean until late in the second set and the new Jerry played for the first time in Atlanta.... but it all came together and rocked on well into the wee hours of the morning. If you long for the 'Dead' days gone by, this band will deliver you straight back into one of those fog induced nights of old!!! Once in awhile you get shown the light in the strangest places if you look at it right.....

  • DSO was great

Seen these guys twenty times, and this was the best I've ever seen them.

  • Awesome rendition!

by ATLTrojan on 2/6/11Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Only the second time I've seen DSO, perhaps it was because the show performed was of the time that turned me on to the Dead, but this was an awesome show!
