Dark Star Orchestra on Tour
More than just a tribute band, the seven members of the Dark Star Orchestra are dedicated to the Grateful Dead live experience, best known for playing full setlists picked from their 2,000+ concerts. The Grateful Dead's live show is legendary, a catalog of improvisation traded and celebrated across decades. The Dark Star Orchestra re-creates the Dead's intra-band interplay and pastoral guitar soloing. Remarkably devoted and true to the source material, DSO tailors their arrangements, gear and tempos to the era of the evening. Some nights find the DSO creating original setlists, playing sets from the Jerry Garcia Band or even jamming with members of the Dead themselves.
Dark Star Orchestra in Concert
Formed in Chicago in 1997, Dark Star Orchestra provides generations of fans with the chance to experience entire Grateful Dead sets, song by song. Named after "Dark Star," a part of the Dead's set known for exploratory jams, DSO rose to national prominence in 1998 when Mike Gordon and John Fishman of Phish joined them for a performance of the Dead's 1983 Halloween show. DSO promptly became a touring sensation: At 2,800 shows and counting, DSO have played more shows than the Grateful Dead themselves. They ultimately enlisted keyboardist Rob Barraco of Phil Lesh and Friends, the Other Ones and the 2003 touring version of the Dead. The DSO have played Bonnaroo and Milwaukee's SummerFest, and they've been hosting their own annual fests for years - the Dark Star Jubilee in Ohio and the Jam in the Sand in Jamaica. Perhaps the most important honor for DSO, though, is enlisting actual members of the Grateful Dead, having performed on stage accompanied by Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, Donna Jean Godchaux, Vince Welnick and Tom Constanten. A 2018 show even found guitarist Jeff Mattson playing Jerry Garcia's custom-made guitar, "Wolf," which the Dead founder used for two decades.

Great Concert! The band was so tight and on it and had the crowd singing and dancing!
As always, they played a famous Grateful Dead show and they even did a little extra special song at the end from Jerry Garcia's Band :) It was pretty amazing!
excellent renditions of Grateful Dead classics, absolutely great show
DSO put on an unforgettable performance. The tightest set I've ever seen!
I cannot wait to see DSO again but at a different venue. The Hilton in Atlantic City was nice but really small. The show was amazing. DSO played a great set.
This show was awesome! Great setlist from Sept. 3rd 1977! Will definitely see them again and again!
Great show and exciting 2nd set! I really enjoyed the concert.
Got off to a slow start, but by halfway through the first set it was on fire, and it stayed on fire for the rest of the night! Great show!
Dark Star Orchestra as a replica band of the Gratefl Dead is a wonder trip down memory lane. This was my first Dark Star Orchestra concert and I hope the first of many more to come. The are excellent musicians and an exciting band to hear and see.
This was a re-creation of a September 1991 show. A solid first set was topped only by the fire of the second set. Set two opened with the frequent early 90's combo of Scarlet Begonias -> Fire on the Mountain and closed with a hot Throwing Stones -> Not Fade Away. The highlight of the show was an absolutely AMAZING Tennessee Jed. The Norva in a great venue and I encourage all to check out this gem in downtown Norfolk.
They are an outstanding band. Very tight on all the songs. two great lead singers. They are so close to sounding like the Greatful Dead it is uncanny. They played for over two hours. The Norva has almost no seating so the crowd was dancing on the floor.
Always love seeing DSO but this show was one of my favorites. Late 80's, very fun!
The best DSO yet. The best DSO yet The best DSO yet. The best DSO yet
An amazing show! Have to admit that I was a bit skeptical, but they really did justice to the music. Loved it and will absolutely see them again. If you haven't seen them yet, you are in for a treat!!
Great show....nice weather....great people.....no bugs! DSO played an amazing show from 12/4/1973 that the Grateful Dead played in Cincinnati, Ohio. The band mentioned the MN Zoo is one of their favorite venues and it showed......the band was smiling the entire show....the crowd (even the soundboard guys) danced so hard I am sure they were sore the next day...I know I was!
Jonny be good got us rocking and kept us truckin through the show.
Perfect night at the Minnesota Zoo for some amazing outdoor music. As Lisa danced on the stage, I watched trails come off of her hair. Her dancing with the lights sent me into a trance. Jeff was amazing. I felt like I was watching Jerry at times. At times I felt like Rob's fingers were jamming up and down my spinal cord. The Minnesota Zoo is sweet in that you are able to walk right up front by the stage and dance your heart out!!
Excellent show. Have never seen these guys, though have heard they were good. Not disappointed. They've got the instrumentation down and the vocals are eerily close as well. Easily the best Dead cover band out there.
Very good band, vocal delivery and Greatful Dead sound was great but lacking the punch without two drummers. Was able to guess the correct year of the show and many of the songs that were coming up.
Killer show. Perfect choice of 12-04-1973. Zoo stage was beautiful
