Dark Star Orchestra on Tour

More than just a tribute band, the seven members of the Dark Star Orchestra are dedicated to the Grateful Dead live experience, best known for playing full setlists picked from their 2,000+ concerts. The Grateful Dead's live show is legendary, a catalog of improvisation traded and celebrated across decades. The Dark Star Orchestra re-creates the Dead's intra-band interplay and pastoral guitar soloing. Remarkably devoted and true to the source material, DSO tailors their arrangements, gear and tempos to the era of the evening. Some nights find the DSO creating original setlists, playing sets from the Jerry Garcia Band or even jamming with members of the Dead themselves.

Dark Star Orchestra in Concert

Formed in Chicago in 1997, Dark Star Orchestra provides generations of fans with the chance to experience entire Grateful Dead sets, song by song. Named after "Dark Star," a part of the Dead's set known for exploratory jams, DSO rose to national prominence in 1998 when Mike Gordon and John Fishman of Phish joined them for a performance of the Dead's 1983 Halloween show. DSO promptly became a touring sensation: At 2,800 shows and counting, DSO have played more shows than the Grateful Dead themselves. They ultimately enlisted keyboardist Rob Barraco of Phil Lesh and Friends, the Other Ones and the 2003 touring version of the Dead. The DSO have played Bonnaroo and Milwaukee's SummerFest, and they've been hosting their own annual fests for years - the Dark Star Jubilee in Ohio and the Jam in the Sand in Jamaica. Perhaps the most important honor for DSO, though, is enlisting actual members of the Grateful Dead, having performed on stage accompanied by Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, Donna Jean Godchaux, Vince Welnick and Tom Constanten. A 2018 show even found guitarist Jeff Mattson playing Jerry Garcia's custom-made guitar, "Wolf," which the Dead founder used for two decades.

  • Horrible set

by APerson on 6/3/25Tabernacle - AtlantaRating: 2 out of 5

Just happened we got the show with the worst possible set of songs. Sound system was a bit messed up as well. The rhythm guitar could barely be heard. The piano was way, way too loud. And the vocals were muffled and unintelligible. Yes the Grateful Dead played all of those songs at one point in live shows. But Dark Star doing almost all of these one-offs was a disappointment. And Hey Jude is just about the worst Beatles song. In spite of the set of songs, we had a good time at the Tabernacle. Great venue!

  • So fun

by Dark and stormy on 6/2/25Tabernacle - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

They absolutely channeled a great Dead experience - a bit uneven on just a few songs but superlative on others. The keyboardist-led “Hey Jude” right after drums and space was truly sublime.

  • Always do the Dead Justice

They have the right vibe ... prefer them over Dead & Co

  • Phenomenal curated show!!!

by Jmat on 6/2/25Tabernacle - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

DSO admitted to us that they curated this show just for us and it was absolutely amazing!! I had been wanting to hear a live version of Throwing Stones for so long and they absolutely killed it. It was such an incredible show and I cannot express how amazing the entire band was. I will definitely look to see them every time they are in town!

  • Great show, even in the rain!

by Beelady on 5/31/25Greenfield Lake Amphitheater - WilmingtonRating: 5 out of 5

It began to lightly rain during the first set, really came down second set! The band played on, no lightening, and it was big fun! Food was good, positive attitudes from staff, band and concert goers. Great night, albeit a wet one.

  • Great show

by Ken Kay on 5/30/25Greenfield Lake Amphitheater - WilmingtonRating: 4 out of 5

An excellent performance by the band, tho a bit dampened by a building rainstorm. They probably should’ve shortened their psychedelic drum number. But the crowd handled it all with great spirit. All in all, a Deadhead lovefest was enjoyed by all.

  • Band was great. Some in Audience not so much.

by WJH on 3/19/25Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre at the Count Basie Center - Red BankRating: 4 out of 5

The band was great. Another great show. The audience was really into it. Brought back many great memories. Unfortunately a few people near us in the audience really hurt the experience for several around us. We had seats on the aisle. Several people came down and set up in the middle of the aisle all around us. They clearly did not have seats in the area. They blocked the aisle - especially when security had to help a person that had passed out and they could not move easily due to the extra people in the aisle. The people without seats danced wildly in the aisle and kept hitting those of us that actually had seats. They also blocked our view even though we were standing. I guess the people without the seats are special and were more important than the rest of us since they clearly did not care about of how they were impacting us. Oh well, at least they had a good time.

  • Great set, great show, great venue

by Jerseyman on 3/18/25Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre at the Count Basie Center - Red BankRating: 5 out of 5

Always happy to see Dark Star and always happy to see a show at the Count Basie. I won't go on, but I'll say that Lisa Mackey's "Hurts Me Too"was tremendous. Dark Star remains as close in spirit as you will come to an old time Dead show. And they don't extract three hundred dollars for the experience.

  • DSO - Red Bank 3/14/25

by Stacey on 3/18/25Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre at the Count Basie Center - Red BankRating: 5 out of 5

Great show with easy parking, small venue at Count Basie, short lines, went by myself and felt comfortable. Got a seat in the last row on the 3rd level so I could dance - saw them a year ago in PA with my friend and the guys behind us kept telling us to sit down 😆 Looking forward to next year on the East Coast.

  • Great show!

  • Both sound and lighting were good

by Hubie on 3/17/25Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre at the Count Basie Center - Red BankRating: 4 out of 5

I didn't like the fact I wasn't allowed to go out to my car to get something. But overall crowd control was well implemented.

  • Truly an out of body experience

A top 3 performance ever! The band was really listening to each other. and picking up on the energy of each other, leading the audience on a mind blowing journey.

  • Killer first set

by Candyman on 2/12/25Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

The first set was spectacular. Broken arrow and maybe the best live Box of Rain I’ve ever seen.

  • Always A Heart/MindBlower

by Candi on 2/12/25Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

Not much to tell other than great music with incredible improvisational energy and a beautiful crowd to go with it. Didn't suck to be on the floor at Fox Theatre either. These shows never get old.

  • Like a time machine in every way conceivable.

by Mark on 2/11/25Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

I felt like I was able to go back in time to an era or era’s that I missed. The way their voices, guitar tones, and songs sound so much like everything I’ve heard on tapes, or live, for the past 30 years is uncanny. I was kind of speechless. Outstanding! I’ll go whenever they’re in my area.

  • A Real Special Night!

by MichaelC on 2/11/25Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

DSO just rocked the house! Sound system at the Fox was superb! The band seemed at home, and the audience as well. Just a real special night for these fans!
