    Trixie Whitley: Soul with integrity

by ecor on 2/5/11Aladdin Theater - Portland

This young woman immerses herself in the emotions of songs. She is vulnerable and yet has the strength to be open. Her body, gestures and intonations are committed. I felt that I was witnessing a potential grammy candidate.

    Black Dub is ethereal!

by christof on 2/5/11Aladdin Theater - Portland

Black Dub is musical Utopia. The sonic landscapes of Lanois' guitar....the unbelievable drumming of Brian...often accompanied by Trixie at her drum kit, while belting out some of the most powerful, melodic vocals...and the thundering bass lines propping up the whole Spiritual montage; pure Bliss! Black Dub is the least known best band in the world. Trixie Whitley is destined to be as legendary of a singer as Norah Jones, Ella Fitzgerald, and Billie Holiday. The down to Earth joy of the band as they interact with one another brings a sweet, human element to their musical alchemy!

    Black Dub Fantastic

by PDXness on 2/5/11Aladdin Theater - Portland

Great show in a great venue. World class musicians delivered a very personal performance. Not a flawless show, which made it all the better in that it felt real and honest. After all, if I want perfection, I'd listen to their album. This felt like being invited to a jam session. Awesome in the truest sense of the word.

    Black Dub was amazing!!

by Mike4318 on 2/2/11El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

Awesome show and I go to alot of shows. Part of what made it special was that I was in front row at El Rey. A great small venue to see a show. Wasn't sure what to expect but went because I liked the new Black Dub album. Had not listened to any Lanois solo material before. Was totally blown away by his musicianship and mastering his 4 piece band. All 4 musicians were incredible.

Black Dub at the El Rey

by floater2009 on 2/1/11El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

Daniel Lanois' Black Dub played an incredible set at the El Rey last Friday. The band is more like a force of nature, a storm approaching in the desert. Trixie Whitley is an amazing vocalist, with talent and charm to burn. One of the few people who could really front this unit. Daniel did a handful of his classics, but the show was rooted in new Black Dub music, which was great

Black Dub w/ Rocco Deluca was orgasmic

by Woozhead on 1/31/11El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

This show was a perfect night. Rocco Deluca is a must see. One of the most powerful solo performances I have ever seen. Black Dub was off the charts amazing. I hope they continue to tour the west coast frequently.

Black Dub - An Auspicious Debut

by GGBarnum on 1/30/11El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

Black Dub's L.A. debut revealed a band of mostly seasoned pros still finding its feet as a unit, just as veteran producer/musician Daniel Lanois is still finding his feet as a bandleader. At its best—as during the first half of the band's set at the El Rey Theatre—Black Dub is a balanced blend of distinctive and diverse musical voices. Drummer Brian Blade's deep groove clicked with the reserved funk of James "Sidepipe" Wilson's bass, with their command of their extensive stylistic vocabulary providing a solid but nimble foundation for Lanois' acid-tinged guitar atmospherics, the ensemble's folksy group harmonies, and the soulful wail of the group's lone newcomer, vocalist Trixie Whitley. Whitley taps a vein of considerable emotional depth, pairing her rich tone with an authentic feel for blues and gospel. The predictable thing would have been to put her up front as the star, but Whitley and Lanois know better: her control isn't quite there, and she tends to compensate with volume—a problem exacerbated by a lack of mic technique. Her songwriting, featured on one conventional rocker, is also still in the developmental stage. Even so, her singing was consistently exhilarating, and she demonstrated versatility by playing drums, keyboard, and guitar during the set. In a way, the band seems to be serving as a clinic for Whitley, an exercise that will likely pay considerable dividends in the years to come. As it stands, her performance alone is worth the price of admission. Despite Lanois' long musical career, he's as green as Whitley in his role as leader and guitarist. When focusing on the team, this inexperience was moot; his strength has always been in his guiding hand, and it's no less true on stage than in the studio. However, as he increasingly asserted his leadership in the latter part of the set, he sometimes threw the band out of balance. Lanois cites influences like Jimi Hendrix and Neil Young, and with Black Dub he wears them on his sleeve. Alas, he is neither as accomplished a guitarist nor as distinctive a singer as either. His ever-more-extended guitar solos were long on volume but came up short on rhythm to the point that even Blade and Wilson couldn't anchor his sonic blur. This may jar fans drawn in by the band's break-out single, "I Believe In You," with its spacious instrumental palette of bass, drums, and sparse piano. Much better was a duet with Blade in which Lanois switched to pedal steel, an axe with which he seemed far more adept. One hopes that he'll integrate this approach into the ensemble numbers in place of the guitar theatrics. Ultimately, however, these are minor quibbles. When a band with this much talent is searching for the limits of its sound, that's an adventure you don't want to miss.

    Good show, great raw emotion

Good show, great raw emotion. Especially on "Surely" by Trixie Whitley. Rocco DeLuca was an elemental force of musicianship as the opening act.

    Great night of music

by Anaqah on 1/30/11El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

All the musicians were terrific. I was not familiar with Rocco before the show. I liked him a lot. I was anxious to see Lanois' Black Dub .. and they DELIVERED! It was great show with a great vibe. My only ding is that there was a lot of waiting time before the first act and between the acts.

This is why you see Music Live!

by Dannyod on 1/30/11El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

The sounds were delicious and the words nutritious for your soul. The dynamics were awesome thanks to Mr Brian Blade and Trixie. Loved the video cameraman. He was getting in there close to the performance and managed to keep focus of the moments without blurring the image all the time! The camera was there like another musician. Hopefully the recordings will launch on you toube or sites. It's quite obvious that Mr Lanois is passionate about songs, performing and the emotional rollercoasters intailed. He is also extremely talented at bringing together a fine ensemble for his songs and vision. It never got painflly loud and the dynamics were constantly luring you inside the emotion of the sounds and words. The El Rey was a great venue for the group and the Mix was as good as it gets, thanks to all those engineers and mark howard for such a great sounding show. C'mon back to LA so many more can get the opportunity to see and hear a great show for the price. Spedd your $ misely and check it out, it will remind you of why you go out and see Live music. Hopefully in the future, Darryl Jones can provide his voice and bass talent live with this group!

This was one of the best shows I've seen in years. I've seen Daniel Lanois many, many times, and this one absolutely stood out. This band is, to a one, extraordinary.

Lanois & Black Dub - sublime.

by bleachbro on 1/30/11El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

Singlehandedly restoring my faith in rock oriented music with integrity. The sound - best I've heard, ever. Mark Howard really brought something unique with his sonics and surround panning. Never heard anything like it. It was an inspiring night. There is an authenticity to Black Dub that was palpable. I can't stress enough how good this group is for the music industry, which has failed otherwise in my opinion, to market similar, lasting, compelling artists and products. This group is built on all the right stuff - crafted, inventive songs, extreme musicianship and technical prowess.

    Great, great show

by drel5 on 1/30/11El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

Although I was a tad disappointed they did not play a lot of new material, Daniel Lanois' new band Black Dub was amazing. This is an impressive collection of musicians and they sound fantastic live. I'm particularly impressed by Brian Blade, drummer, who is spectacular. I love that they played such a small intimate venue. Great, great show.

    Otherwordly, Manna from Heaven

by lbnelson on 1/30/11El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

It's in the title, son! Manna from Heaven ... Much needed acknowledgements shouted out loud in music form ... Crying out loud what goes on. "The Sound Is Dying"... straight up. Each note was played, sung, performed with full effort and integrity. Daniel Lanois is my hero ... his seriously talented bandmates kept tight alongside. Black Dub and this particular performance will be with me 'til the end and beyond. Rocco Deluca - no words. Slay slay slay away with your lyrics and steel ... Keep on keepin on doing what you gotta do. .

    Totally rocking

by PabloPKA on 1/30/11El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

You can tell Lanois and friends have a lot of fun when they play and they share it with everyone. Great music, 3 part harmonies a lot of the time. Brian Blade is a monster on the drums. Rocco Deluca opened and had a number of fantastic moments on stage. A truly terrific show.
