CULTURE CLUB IN CONCERT:

Calling all karma chameleons: Culture Club is back on the road to promote their latest album Tribes, and fans across North America can relive the ‘80s as Boy George and company perform their classic new wave hits on tour. In concert Boy George remains as fierce a showman as ever, taking the stage with the same gender-bending makeup and outré fashion that made him a global ‘80s icon. Whether he’s bringing the drama on upbeat favorites like “I’ll Tumble 4 Ya” or melting hearts with his coy croon on “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me”, George always charms audiences with his soulful delivery, infectious dancing, and candid asides between songs. The band keeps pace beautifully, cranking out their signature brand of reggae-influenced new wave with an ease and funkiness that is sure to get fans grooving. Whether they’re performing solo or sharing the bill with fellow new wave icon Howard Jones, Culture Club always treat fans to a nostalgic and dance-worthy journey through some of the best sounds of the ‘80s.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Culture Club was formed in London in the early ‘80s by Boy George, an androgynous club kid who had previously sang with legendary new wave outfit Bow Wow Wow. Calling themselves Culture Club as a nod to their diverse cultural backgrounds, the band made their debut in 1982 with the album Kissing to be Clever. Though the album’s first two singles failed to make much of a mark, third single “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me” topped charts around the world, catapulting the band to international superstardom virtually overnight. Their 1983 sophomore album Colour by Numbers was an even bigger smash, blowing up charts around the globe with catchy hits like “Karma Chameleon” and earning the band a Grammy in 1984 for Best New Artist. Culture Club released two more albums in the mid-’80s to moderate success, but by 1986 Boy George’s struggles with addiction had pushed the band apart. They reunited in the late ‘90s and released the 1999 album Don’t Mind If I Do and toured for a stint, but George’s successful career as a DJ soon led to another hiatus. Following a few one-off shows in 2011, the band reunited in 2014 to record their sixth album Tribes -- a highly anticipated return that has fans dying to catch them on tour in support of the release.

    Above and Beyond

    by Patti on 8/23/23

This was a stellar concert. So much live entertainment for one price! I had never heard Berlin, Boy George or Culture Club in person. I will never forget this concert!

    Not what I was expecting.

    by David F on 8/23/23

The venue itself was great but Culture Club fell below what I was expecting. Boy George’s singing was not on par with what it usually is and the tempo of the songs were all dialed way down. On a good note Howard Jones and Berlin were excellent.

    The opening acts were great

    by Mike on 8/23/23

Really enjoyed Berlin & Howard Jones. Also great to see the legend that is Boy George.

    Dissapointed

    by Chris on 8/23/23

Boy George talked way too much and played other artists music. Not motivating or familiar songs as well. Seemed like he was not there to perform. Band sounded great.

Culture Club, HoJo, Berlin was the magni-excellente’

    by Girl Ann on 8/23/23

It’s true, I still love Boy George, even after all this time. HoJo is also still amazing, with a bunch of sing along tunes beaming with positivity. Berlin was a solid opener. I felt bad at the beginning when an owl flew across the (Toyota) Concord Pavilion, awakened too early and stunned from the music. The bass was too loud for all of the groups, at one time or another. Sound guy needs to watch the mix. We’re 80’s fans, we are old and sensitive now. Otherwise, great job.

    Great line up!

    by Elci on 8/23/23

From Berlin, to Ho Jo, to Boy George & the Culture Club, it was an evening of great fun! The only caveat was the gates did not open til a little after 6pm at the VIP Parking. Show started at 7pm. It would been nice if gates were open at 5pm, so people would have plenty of time to get food and drinks and chill before the show. The food and drink lines were very long right away, not giving enough time to enjoy food and drinks before the band started playing. Does the venue not want to generate additional revenue on F&B?

    Awesome Boy George Experience!

    by Jimbo on 8/23/23

Having never been to the Concord Pavilion before, I really didn’t know what to expect. Getting there was interesting (back hills) and parking was a mess. Once in, there were plenty of places to get liquid refreshments and lines were not too long. The pavilion was great and easy to find our seats. All three acts, beginning with Berlin, were great. Howard Jones was next. Didn’t really remember Howard, but did remember some of his songs. Next the main act, Boy George! Dang, if he doesn’t still have it! He was really great and move through his repertoire with ease. All in all, it was truly a night to remember!

    Great bands; NIGHTMARE parking management

    by TNA on 8/23/23

The bands were great and played most of their hits. This NEGATIVE REVIEW IS ABOUT THE TERRIBLE PARKING MANAGEMENT AND EXITING/DRIVING FROM THE CHULA VISTA AMPHITHEATER. I understand there is a large rush of people trying to exit all at once and there will be traffic congestion. However, the amphitheater now charges ridiculous prices for dirt parking that is poorly maintained and there is no management or direction of exiting traffic. This makes for painful waits inching out of the dirt parking areas with NO STAFF directing or monitoring traffic. The ticket says Free Parking but then you receive a glut of emails trying to sell Premier, VIP and Early Bird parking from $60-$100....frankly this is more than the concert tickets! I will never return to this venue. All of the other San Diego venues like Humphreys, SDSU Opean Air Theatre, and the Shell manage their parking and provide alternatives. The Chula Vista Amphitheater will take your money and then leaves you to fight through the congestion. I will not support or spend money to see an artist who chooses this venue. Any fun from the concert is destroyed by the hours trying to leave the Chula Vista amphitheater. Happy not to return ever.

Culture Club, HOJO & Berlin Concord Review

    by Chema on 8/23/23

My wife's and my overall experience was great! It was our first time at the Concord Pavilion and we will be back in the future. The seating, food and beverage selections were great. The bathrooms were clean and lines moved quickly. I was most interested in watching Culture Club. However, Howard Johnson and Berlin stole the show. Their sets were on time and energetic. For being the last date on the tour they sure brought energy. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for Culture Club. While Boy George's voice still sounded good and the musicians were good, his selection of songs and rearrangement of the songs left us wanting to hear the original songs as they were sung back in the day. They did end with a great encore. I only wish they would have kept up with the enthusiasm and momentum that Berlin and Howard Jones provided.

Berlin should have been the headliner

    by Joe on 8/23/23

Disappointed the Howard Jones and Boy George chose to do cover songs from other artists instead of their own songs that we went to hear. Berlin was the best and as usual and put on a good show!! Boy George just kind of walked around and I was not very impressed at all. He chose to sing a 10 minute rendition of "Get it on"that was boring enough for me to start nodding off. Even the audience was thrown off by it.

    Singing was good

The music was nostalgic and decent. However, the dancing entertainment part was minimal.

    Mix emotions!

by Javi's Keyes Club on 8/23/23

The concert itself was great, but the reason I'm only giving it 3 stars is because the parking situation was the worst, I have ever experienced. We arrived in plenty of time, but it literally took us 35 minutes to park due to the disorganized attendants. We missed the beginning of Berlin. The bands were all great though..

    Great show

The warm-up bands weren't my style but Boy George and Culture Club were great. Sax player and drummer were impressive.

    Excellent show!

    by Steph on 8/23/23

The show was so much fun! Berlin was great and Terri Nunn rocked it! I’m so glad I got to see HoJo. Boy George’s voice is still so good. Roy & Mikey were clearly having fun. Loved the backup singers. Great night overall!

    Incredible show

    by Mike on 8/23/23

First, the outside venue was very nice. Great concessions and very clean. Next, all 3 bands were off the charts amazingly. Howard Jones and Berlin exceeded my expectations and Culture Club as every bit as good as I expected.

It was a hundred degrees plus at the venue-- very uncomfortable but the performance didn't mind the heat!

    Disappointed

    by KL on 8/23/23

The show seemed to be cut short which was disappointing. I felt like they were rushed. Boy George/Culture Club performed for 1 hour.
