About

Fusing low-res electronic noise and pop hooks so effortlessly that it can seem accidental, Crystal Castles began as producer/multi-instrumentalist Ethan Kath's solo project in late 2003. Kath got the moniker from the name of She-Ra's dwelling in the -He-Man and -Masters of the Universe cartoon series; it's also the name of a 1983 Atari video game, which is oddly appropriate, considering that one component of the band's distinctive sound comes from a keyboard modified with an Atari 5200 sound chip. When Kath collaborated with singer Alice Glass on some songs in spring 2005, Crystal Castles' lineup was complete. One of the songs the pair recorded, "Alice Practice," was something of an accident: it was intended to be a demo of Glass testing out a microphone, but its presence on MySpace piqued record labels' interest. "Alice Practice" was released as a limited-edition 7" in summer 2006 on Merok Records, also home to Klaxons; its 500-copy run sold out in three days. Kath and Glass worked on their own songs and also honed their remixing skills, tweaking songs for Klaxons as well as GoodBooks, Uffie, Health, and Bloc Party. Tours with the Presets and Metric in 2007 set the stage for the release of Crystal Castles' self-titled debut album, which Last Gang released early in 2008. The duo returned in 2010 with another self-titled album; when it leaked onto the Internet in late April of that year, the band released it digitally soon after, with a physical release following that May. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi

    Could have been better.

by Deee1234 on 4/27/13The Fox Theater - Pomona - Pomona

I love Crystal Castles but I have seen much better shows. The opening band was horrible. I've never been to a show and counted down the minutes until they would be over. The name of the band was Doldrums and if they are ever opening for another band I want to see I will make sure I skip that tour. The drummer couldn't keep his crappy drums that were held up on cement blocks together. You couldn't understand anything the singer was saying and it was just bad. They played for about 45 minutes and then the roadies came and fixed everything for the crystal castles set. They did this on about less than 15 minutes. It is now 10pm and after that horrible performance we are all waiting for Crystal Castles. FORTY minutes go by. Of nothing. Really. The set is ready and the band is just taking forever to start. Again a first for a show of which I go to plenty. They didn't start playing until 1040 and by then as much as you love them you're really just over it. The set was great they played great Alice was great but come on people. Give us a break. I'm skipping the next Crystal Castles show.

    Subpar experience.

by Greyones on 4/27/13The Fox Theater - Pomona - Pomona

I love Crystal Castles, and they had great energy during their performance, but the short setlist and venue brought down the experience. Although the bass was nice and strong, it was completely overpowering the melodies, at least where I was standing. For the price (~$40), I felt pretty let down, considering there was only 2 hours of music during the show. The opening band played for 40 minutes, and Crystal Castles played for about 1 hour and 20 minutes.

I appreciate their appearance because now I listen to them AALLLLL the time ! I had a blast. Met amazing people. Danced. And just had a great time. Please have them come back again!!!!! I'd love you forever ;D Also, the venue was beautiful! It was dark and mysterious but sexy all in one. I'm coming back on Dec. 7th for the Monster Outbreak tour and I can't wait :)

    CC cuts it short.

by mucha on 11/1/12Newport Music Hall - Columbus

Love CC. Can't wait for the rest of the new tunes. Bought the T-Shirt. But, ultimately left the show disappointed. They have two CDs with a third on the way (plenty of material to fill two hours) and yet they quit before an hour had passed. Much too short, especially considering that to get a good spot many fans get to the show as the doors open. Waiting 3 hours for a concert that is less than an hour is not good. I saw them last year and it was pretty much the same. What they do perform is great high energy club fun with a monster drummer and an eye sizzling light show. Even as a blond, Alice is a fantastic performer. All over the stage and into the pit. I just wish she would engage more with the audience by talking to us once and a while rather than just crowd surfing over us. I have read many reviews with the same complaint of the shows being too short. Until I start reading more that have longer set lists, I will sadly have to pass on the next CC concert.

The show was awesome. The artist really engaged with the audience and made us feel like we were part of the show too. The lead singer jumped into the crowd and often sang in the crowd. The light effects were great, they really used them a lot to set the mood of each song. The security at the venue was very friendly and the atmosphere was great. I didn't feel too tight in the crowd and I had enough space to dance. The artist really did a great job and I am looking forward to seeing them again soon once their new album is released.

Crystal Castles was the best show I've been to not only due to their performance, but Fox Theater is an amazing venue. I'd spend everyday watching CC there if I had it my way.

    Alice was wild!

    by beastcancer666 on 10/24/12Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

-The wannabe dj before the show sucks. -Kontravoid sounds like if Ian Curtis of Joy Division teamed up with Berlin, which was terrible. -HEALTH was removed and it ruined my entire night. -Crystal Castles almost made my night, Alice put on a good show and at the end, she seemed like she was just rolling around the stage and crowd.

    Do they have a singer?

by gasull on 10/24/12Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

I couldn't hear her voice almost at all. Either her voice was too quiet or the instruments too loud. Many times I couldn't even tell if she was singing. Their songs are so good that even an "instrumental" concert was still OK.

This concert was good. However the concert they had last year was amazing and left a lasting impression.

Crystal Castles put on a great performance and had unbelievable stage presence. Alice crowed surfed for a good part of the show, smoking a cigarette during a song, punching a fan for getting a little too touchy, and eventuality spitting a few swigs of jack onto the pit below. Great show, great music, can't wait for the new album. Shorties beware: if you're in the pit and Alice jumps in, you WILL be getting constant elbow blows to the face and chest, or taken under. Crystal Castal fans are rabid, and society breaks down when there's a chance to touch her.

    Crystal Castles was EXCELLENT!

by Tmac4302 on 10/13/12Newport Music Hall - Columbus

The only reason why I gave this review 4 stars was because of the opening acts for Crystal Castles. They didn't do a bad job, but didn't really compliment CC. They were much heavier and almost a completely different genre. One act was some dude on stage with a MIDI board with a vocal distortion effect as 1 strobe flashed in front of him for an hour. The 2nd act was a band that consisted of a guy swinging his ridiculously long hair around and screamed into the mic while the drummed slapped around his drum set. That being said, CRYSTAL CASTLES WAS AMAZING! I loved every second of their set. I was happy paying 30+ a ticket just to see them. I loved every second that CC was on stage.

    Crystal Castles was phenomenal!

by Shamrock488 on 10/13/12Newport Music Hall - Columbus

I have attended over 15 of Crystal Castles' shows. They never disappoint me with their energetic live shows. The lighting effects are amazing and they did not take long in-between bands for the next act to come out. The timing was good-- I would totally recommend seeing them live (if you have not already). I look forward to seeing them again. They are my absolute favorite band.
