About

Fusing low-res electronic noise and pop hooks so effortlessly that it can seem accidental, Crystal Castles began as producer/multi-instrumentalist Ethan Kath's solo project in late 2003. Kath got the moniker from the name of She-Ra's dwelling in the -He-Man and -Masters of the Universe cartoon series; it's also the name of a 1983 Atari video game, which is oddly appropriate, considering that one component of the band's distinctive sound comes from a keyboard modified with an Atari 5200 sound chip. When Kath collaborated with singer Alice Glass on some songs in spring 2005, Crystal Castles' lineup was complete. One of the songs the pair recorded, "Alice Practice," was something of an accident: it was intended to be a demo of Glass testing out a microphone, but its presence on MySpace piqued record labels' interest. "Alice Practice" was released as a limited-edition 7" in summer 2006 on Merok Records, also home to Klaxons; its 500-copy run sold out in three days. Kath and Glass worked on their own songs and also honed their remixing skills, tweaking songs for Klaxons as well as GoodBooks, Uffie, Health, and Bloc Party. Tours with the Presets and Metric in 2007 set the stage for the release of Crystal Castles' self-titled debut album, which Last Gang released early in 2008. The duo returned in 2010 with another self-titled album; when it leaked onto the Internet in late April of that year, the band released it digitally soon after, with a physical release following that May. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi

their amazing music didn't translate well to a live show. they preformed okay, but melodies and vocals were indiscernible, and their bass isn't varied enough to be the loudest thing in the room. may have sounded different in another part of the room, but i'm too small and would be crushed up front. it also ended too quickly to make the wait worth it. rude crowd and venue staff as well.

Great lights during the concert! They constantly changed depending on what song was playing. So it was visually amazing. I didnt like th placement of some of the speakers or whatever they were on the edge of the stage, it made it more difficult for Alice Glass to get into the audience because she is famous for doing so. But also the walls and decorations inside were just beautiful!!!

    disappointing

by vladbarr on 5/1/13Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Way too loud. Impossible to appreciate their great music. Starting at 10:30pm did not help either. It's great to have to leave before the end to get to public transportation on time.

    The Castles Rocked It!

by DizzleMan on 5/1/13House of Blues Dallas - Dallas

The opening band was alright, but most opening bands are just alright. The sound was good and the bass was loud. Then the Castles came out. Alice in her typical hoodie, a live drummer and Ethan hovering over the board with a hoodie on as well. Then BOOM! The lights and bass dropped at the same time and the show was on full blast. The audio was excellent, and the vocals were crisp and clean. If Crystal Castles come anywhere near Dallas again in the future, I am going! The venue wasn't too crowded although drink prices were outrageous.

    Crystal Castles = Gods

by alexxpracticee on 5/1/13The Fox Theater - Pomona - Pomona

Although I was suffocated during the 2nd song the show was amazing! I moved towards the back where I wrapped myself up into my own little world and danced along with the music. Crystal Castles is visually stunning live. It was my first time seeing them and I will never forget it! Also, Alice had pink hair around this time, I guess it's purple now n.n I also met some really cool people, so if your ever at a Crystal Castles show by yourself make friends! Everyone there is looking to be as cool as everyone so you'll blend in! :D

    Love!

by yesi91 on 4/30/13The Fox Theater - Pomona - Pomona

I love going to Crystal Castles concerts because of the energy in the crowd. People dance nonstop and I love being a part of that. Alice is great, she'll crowd surf which gets people riled up and everybody starts pushing to get near her. It gets so crazy that it's very common to see lost shoes on the floor when the light goes on and the show's over.

Venue was awesome. Looks like something out of the roaring 20's; reminds me of an old-school opera house or something. Crystal Castles killed it. I couldn't stop dancing, and Alice got down into the mosh pit for several of the songs... overall just a really amazing vibe from the whole show.

If Crystal Castles were to create a "best of" album it would contain every song they played at this concert.

Crystal Castles = magnificently mind blowing

by sophiaxxxxxxxxxxx on 4/29/13Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

I had been waiting to see CC for soooo long and was bummed that I couldn't make it the last time they were in town - but all the more stoked for this show! Only problem of the night was that they came on 30 minutes late (supposed to be 10, came on around 10:35) and therefore couldn't fit in all the songs I would've liked to hear. However, oh my goodness they were so incredible - one of the best concerts I've been to oh wow wish I could relive it.

    Crystal Castles was amazing

    by justanna1213 on 4/29/13Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

I was in the pit when Crystal Castles came up on stage and I honestly could not hang with the noshing crowd so my roommate and I moved back to the stair area and that's when the concert became amazing. I could see the whole stage and hear everything perfectly. I go to live shows all the time and honest Crystal Castles will be on the top of my list forever. It was non-stop fun and loudness and excitement for over and hour and I honestly just wanted more. I couldn't stop dancing and smiling.

    Rockstar Decadence Electronica Style

by Roodeeoh on 4/29/13Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Definately worth every dollar spent, I was near the front. Alice Glass dive into the crowd everyother song. The performance was superior to the recordings and sonicaly simiarly to techno meets metal. Not your typical performance with typical musicians. This was my second time seeing them.Must see at least once.

    Hit and Miss

by Doppelfisch on 4/28/13Hollywood Palladium - Hollywood

The band was great, had a lot of energy and it showed in so many ways. They really throw themselves out there. But a few things...It wasn't until the encore that I felt that someone finally hammered out kinks and such for lighting and for sound. I don't know who their light tech and sound tech were, but they either were nervous the first chunk of the show or had no idea what they were doing. It was a seizure fest every song up until the encore. Lights are pretty, and you can achieve a lot of different effects with them, but knowing how to strobe a light gets old really fast. And the gain levels of the music seemed off, and I think the band knew it at one point because it was fixed later. Also, the Palladium...neat looking venue, not really a venue for them I think. They could have done with something a touch smaller perhaps, and better suited to their particular auditory experience. Band was good, visuals and sound were not.

Crystal Castles at The Hollywood Palladium

by BrokenHalo on 4/27/13The Fox Theater - Pomona - Pomona

This band puts on a great show, lights, great music and energy to dance the whole night away. From the beginning to the end...you feel like you ran a marathon. Like a new person and the weight of the world is lifted off your shoulders. Alice Glass is a true rock star of this generation. The music just hits you over and over and over again. From Wrath of God to Suffocation...you'll feel like a kid again. Dancing, seeing people who you normally wouldn't say hi to dancing next you, smiling and being nice. This is my third time seeing them live and it always feels like im seeing them for the first time. The only way to describe this band live is driving a race car into fired, sand, burning rubber on cement for one hour and thirty minutes. Crystal Castles is deff a band/group to see. The Fox Theater only amplified the music making that much better. The Fox Theater is great for bands such as Crystal Castles. Lots of Electronics, lights, energy....its always been a great venue...especially during the GOLDEN AGE OF RAVES. If you have a chance...see Crystal Castles live...at least once in your lifetime.
