Fusing low-res electronic noise and pop hooks so effortlessly that it can seem accidental, Crystal Castles began as producer/multi-instrumentalist Ethan Kath's solo project in late 2003. Kath got the moniker from the name of She-Ra's dwelling in the -He-Man and -Masters of the Universe cartoon series; it's also the name of a 1983 Atari video game, which is oddly appropriate, considering that one component of the band's distinctive sound comes from a keyboard modified with an Atari 5200 sound chip. When Kath collaborated with singer Alice Glass on some songs in spring 2005, Crystal Castles' lineup was complete. One of the songs the pair recorded, "Alice Practice," was something of an accident: it was intended to be a demo of Glass testing out a microphone, but its presence on MySpace piqued record labels' interest. "Alice Practice" was released as a limited-edition 7" in summer 2006 on Merok Records, also home to Klaxons; its 500-copy run sold out in three days. Kath and Glass worked on their own songs and also honed their remixing skills, tweaking songs for Klaxons as well as GoodBooks, Uffie, Health, and Bloc Party. Tours with the Presets and Metric in 2007 set the stage for the release of Crystal Castles' self-titled debut album, which Last Gang released early in 2008. The duo returned in 2010 with another self-titled album; when it leaked onto the Internet in late April of that year, the band released it digitally soon after, with a physical release following that May. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi
Non-stop, high energy dance party! Loved Crystal Castles! Amazing show!
They killed it! I was curious to see how the new frontwoman would hold it down and I was very pleased. Although no one can replace the charisma of Alice Glass, Crystal Castles' new incarnation has every bit of showwomanship as it had in the past. Ethan was rocking out front and center this time which was different than I had seen in the past, and it worked really well. Also, there was a drummer in the back who looked like he was having a lot of fun too! Light show was borderline seizure-inducing which, in my book, is a good thing. Crowd was fun, although predominantly male, and the venue, as always, was amazing. Thanks for a great Sunday night!
Had an amazing time. I am still sore 3 days later from dancing so much!
Loved every minute of it. Edith blew me away with her stamina and remarkable voice. Still, I missed Alice. Anyway, music was loud and lovely! Enjoyed the improvised interludes. Crowd was really into the show, lots of dancing going on. They played a great mix of older and new material. Will go again next time they hit town.
Pros: venue was great as always. Started on time. Cons: strobe lights for 60 minutes is just a stupid, stupid idea. Especially when they are pointed directly at balcony. Saw other fans leave or shielding their eyes. Audio engineer didn't do them any justice. Tracks and keys were much, much louder than vocals. Lack of clarity killed the show. Was basically an instrumental set list oh well, win some lose some HORRIBLE lighting+horrible sound quality= horrible show
Incredibly mind blowing. What were the lyrics? I don't know, don't care. crystal castles took my mind to another world, and I wanna stay there
Has to be one of the best shows i ever been to! Didnt know what to expect! but i was so glad i went! If u ever have the chance to see them dont miss out on a show of a life time Love Alice Glass!
I love Crystal Castles, and had been anticipating this show for a very long time. We drove 4 hours from Raleigh, NC just to see them. I was still very excited up until the first band, Picture Plane, finished playing. Since the set up for the main act was already finished, I expected the show would start soon, especially since it seemed like they cut Picture Plane short. But no. We waited close to an hour for Crystal Castles to start, despite the fact that there was no discernable reason for the delay. My excitement turned to boredom, then irritation. By the time they finally started, I was so mad at the band for making their fans wait so long for no reason, I couldn't enjoy the show. I don't know if they thought they were "pumping up the audience" or what, but whatever the reason, it was rude and will make me think twice about ever going to one of their performances again. Also, the stage lights were set way too low, and anyone standing at eye-level on either side of the stage got blinded. We originally got great spots right at the stage off to the left, but had to move to the back middle in order to preserve our eye-sight. The lighting was also a problem when we saw Silversun Pickups the Friday before.
Pictureplane was a nice surprise. Loved the dancers. Crystal Castles blew my mind. Had a very good time.
My first time listening to this band that was introduced to me by daughter. Very interesting music that I now like.
