Creighton Bluejays Men's Basketball History

The Creighton University Bluejays of Omaha, Nebraska launched their men’s basketball program in 1911. The team remained independent until 1922, when the Bluejays joined the North Central Conference and immediately won the conference title in their first season under head coach Arthur A. Schabinger. The Bluejays moved to the Missouri Valley Conference for the 1928-29 season and won the conference title in three consecutive years from 1930 to 1932. Schabinger’s successor, Eddie Hickey, led the team to their first NCAA Tournament during the 1940-41 season. They would appear in the tournament again in 1962 and 1964 under coach Red McManus, finishing in the Sweet Sixteen stage, followed by the same result in 1974.

Although Creighton began as an independent program, and have spent the majority of their existence in the Missouri Valley Conference, the team has been a member of the Big East since the 2013-14 season. Under current head coach Greg McDermott, the Bluejays have claimed one regular season championship in the Big East, tying for first in the 2019-20 season, and appeared in five consecutive March Madness tournaments. Along with Sweet Sixteen runs in 2021 and 2024, the Bluejays reached the Elite Eight in 2023.

Creighton has ushered several players into the NBA, including Paul Silas, Kevin McKenna, Benoit Benjamin, Kyle Korver, Anthony Tolliver and Doug McDermott.

Creighton is still strong but Greg McDermott has a lot of work to do with the team. McDermott is lucky to have Steven Ashworth, and Steven Ashworth and the rest of his fantastic recruiting class. Creighton will build strength under Greg McDermott and the coaching team and hopefully go to the dance and hopefully the. Elite Eight or final four. Go JAYS BASKETBALL 🏀

  • Great event !

It was nice to be able to get a courtside seat in a section we normally can’t afford or is available. It was worth the time and money to see a high level opponent and contribute to a good fundraiser cause. We will support more of these types of events

  • Great game, bad view.

by Bugsy on 3/5/24CHI Health Center Omaha - OmahaRating: 4 out of 5

Our seats sat right behind the guardrail at the top on an entrance tunnel. The metal bars were to high and impeded our view. We either had to duck to look thru the bars or stand up to see over them. All CHI Center would have to do is cut the 6 inches of the top crossbar to see over it. I'm sure it's a safety thing but made for a miserable view.

I went to Creighton vs Marquette. The game was at the CHI Health Center in Omaha. Creighton won 83-82. I would recommend to anyone going. The food was just so so. Seats were good and comfortable. Halftime was a gymnastics group that was excellent.
