Crack the Sky is a great live band that has been around since the mid-'70s. They are more popular in Baltimore than any other city. If you are unfamiliar, get their first four studio albums and you will see. This was a special all-acoustic show backed by four very young string musicians. It was nice to hear the old familiar songs (mostly from the aforementioned albums) done in acoustic fashion, and the strings added a little class to the show. The only song that sounded drastically different was "Surf City," which was slowed down and had a lounge lizard feel to it. I was seated near the center of the audience (maybe closer to the stage than dead center) and the sound mix was not so good. Dave's bass and the string section were hard to hear, and the guitars were ear-piercingly tinny. The venue was OK. I was glad there was food available. But I was upset that free water was not. The bartender would not give me a cup of tap water, saying I had to buy bottled. There were no water fountains either. I filled a cup in the bathroom because I refuse to pay for water. My other complaint is that many of the audience members insisted on talking loudly during the show. I know it's rock and roll and people are having a good time. But I came there (and PAID!) to HEAR the band, not your commentary. If and when I talk to my wife during a show, I do so quietly in her ear so only she can hear me. I wish more people did that.
