About

Music motivates at the most primal level.

You instinctually hum a tune in order to get pumped up in the morning, for fuel on the treadmill, to soundtrack your commute, or as the pre-game to a big night out. As much as he treasures his roles as a guitarist, composer, and producer, Cory Wong fashions himself "a hype man," first and foremost. Living up to this classification, he slings a Stratocaster and hurls "dad jokes" from the stage with the same panache, poise, and power.

"For me, it's all about the listener's experience," he explains. "I want them to have a visceral response like: 'I feel better,' 'That was really fun,' or 'I got to escape for an hour.' You'll hear my voice through the guitar, but I'm just a hype man. To uplift audiences with instrumental music that has no singing or lyrics is a fun challenge. I'm trying to solve the riddle. If I can get one person to feel good this way, it's a success.

Straight out of Minneapolis, Cory positioned himself as music's answer to motivational speakers like Tony Robbins since emerging in 2011. Head-spinning rhythm guitar wizardry, technical ebullience, laugh-out-loud jokes, and radiance on stage established him as both a sought-after collaborator and celebrated solo artist alike. He lent his talents to television programs such as The Voice at the dawn of his career. After an impromptu meeting at the weekly jam hosted by Prince's rhythm section (where the Purple One often either performed or watched), he crossed paths with Vulfpeck who welcomed him as a frequent collaborator and member of the band. Solidifying a fruitful partnership, the group named their most popular instrumental track "Cory Wong," in tribute. Lighting up the stage in the band everywhere from Red Rocks Amphitheatre to Madison Square Garden, he remains a cornerstone of Vulfpeck's storied gigs.

"I try to feature the guitar, but I don't force myself into being the star of every song," he says. "The instrument plays an appropriate role. It's not all flash. I'm bringing rhythm to the forefront where it's not so shreddy. I refer to it as 'Covert chops.' I'm doing things that are sneakily hard, but they lay in the cut. I allow the song to breathe and present myself as more of a composer rather than a guitar player."

In the end, Cory transmits joy in its purest form through the guitar.

"The guiding light is to impart a feeling of joy," he leaves off. "I want people to experience instrumental music in a different way. This is hype. It's more than just guitar."

What an amazing group of musicians. It was such a fun show. Very talented!

  • Beware of the Pageant!

by Don on 2/19/23The Pageant - St LouisRating: 1 out of 5

The show was very good. When we returned to our car which was parked under a streetlight in the Pageant parking lot, the rear passenger window was blown out and our car had been ransacked. They have no security there and the street crime is terrible. Attend a show there at your own risk.

  • Great show, too corporate

by PRuss on 11/21/22The Echo Lounge & Music Hall - DallasRating: 3 out of 5

Cory Wong and his band are amazing. He is such a phenomenal performer and the guys who support him are slayers at what they do. This comment is not about their concert. To the contrary, it was so good I ended up driving down to Stubb's in Austin for their show Saturday just to continue the experience. I do not like the way the venue is managed. The corporate upselling of the VIP experience, the overzealous security rushing people out who were trying to visit with band members who came out to say hi and take pictures. This seems to be the general trend for how Live Nation events go. I feel the same way at another venue nearby with corporate management and it detracts from the overall experience of the enjoyment of the music experience. It's a good room, small, intimate, but there are areas that need attention.

  • Charged Me Up!

by Mylon on 11/21/22The Echo Lounge & Music Hall - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

Cory Wong is one of my favorite artists, and his live show was highly energetic, full of joy, and PHONKY! The Echo Lounge Music Hall was the perfect venue that provided an intimate setting for the fans as well! I hope the band returns next year!

  • A Blindingly Great Performance

by Cory Wong Enthusiast on 11/18/22Moore Theatre - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

The show as usual was absolutely impeccable. The musicianship from each of the musicians was out of this world. I spent pretty much the entire concert mouth agape. The only issue I had is that the lights would often shine directly into the eyes of those in the balcony at this venue, blinding everyone. However, the music and performance was so good, i still have no choice but to give it 5 stars.

  • Cory Rocks

by DynamoD on 11/18/22The Van Buren - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5

In my opinion, Cory wong and his band is one of the most entertaining concerts I have seen in a long time. And I see at least 50 concerts a year. The blend of musical styles is refreshing. The respect that Cory has for his band is admirable. The talent of the band is incredible. The wind and brass section is just so much fun to tap your feet to. I'll travel to see Cory if he is ever near. The only downer is the venue. I'm in my 60's and standing for 2+ hours is torture. And they closed the balcony? The Van Buren needs to adjust their presentation if I am to return. And I might mention that I am not the only one who feels that way.

  • Great show!! TM&LN are a monoply

by Bust um up on 11/18/22The Van Buren - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Amazing show!!! Cory and the band kill it like always. Amazing experience. With the exception to the fact that TM&LM are a monopolistic entity and exists solely to benefit investors by extracting as much wealth as possible from the average consumer, while serving no benefit to that consumer. Ant I trust they’ll be broken up!!!!!

  • Awesome

by J on 11/17/22The Observatory North Park - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

Cory Wong and the Wongnotes is great band with Sierra Hull showing up just all that better. Cory Wong is an artist that I will see live whenever he’s near, I’m sold.

  • Great playing, great energy, great fun!

by Drgreat on 11/16/22The Wiltern - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Cory and the Band are great players! The writing is great especially in the horn section. Sierra Hull is an angelic monster! It was wonderful to hear a lot of new music that is not part of their online catalogue. The mix was a little "boomy" on the bottom which sometimes lost clarity in Sunny T's bass lines. Otherwise the house audio was pretty good. The show was fresh, well produced and well paced. The interview "shtick" at the end was a great idea and was carried off well. The seating was smooth and easy and the house staff at the Wiltern were excellent. The drinks were expensive...yikes! Great show!

  • Breezin’

by Bass Ace on 11/14/22Moore Theatre - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

Fantastic concert. Family friendly, hilarious, worth every cent and more. Admittedly, I was worried when it first started. There were some significant sound balance/mix issues but they seem to have got it sorted quickly. Not sure if this was musician or venue related but the band made jokes later and it was very light hearted and cool. Great experience. Would recommend

  • Best concert in a couple decades

by SG on 11/13/22Moore Theatre - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

They not only perform well, seriously the tightest group I’ve probably ever seen but they look like they are all enjoying it immensely.

  • Unbelievable

by JW on 11/13/22Moore Theatre - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

Thus was the most upbeat, funky concert I have ever been too. Don’t expect to sit down for even one song. This concert was full of fun, energy, and phenomenal music. Each band member was the absolute best at their craft. Cory spotlighted everyone in the band giving each member a chance to shine. Cory is such a talented guitar player and band leader. I will be looking for this band again on my 2023 list of shows to see!!!

  • Awesomeness and Funk

by JLegs on 7/4/22The Danforth Music Hall - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Had an amazing evening with Cory Wong and thr Wongnotes. The music was awesome and the funk was conrageous. Petar is a beast and Sonny T laid down a soulful groove. The hornheads were amazing as well. The only complaint i had was for the venue, nothing to do with the band. The Danforth Music Hall has had a long history and it shows. The floors were disgusting and sticky, and everthing appeared to be failing and being left to disrepair.

  • Left early

  • Amazing show, ok venue.

by Jacob on 7/4/22The Danforth Music Hall - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

Cory and his band was amazing! So high energy and great players. The venue's floor was very uncomfortable to stand on for a long time and they packed it so full it was extremely hot in there. Not the worse venue ever
