About

Music motivates at the most primal level.

You instinctually hum a tune in order to get pumped up in the morning, for fuel on the treadmill, to soundtrack your commute, or as the pre-game to a big night out. As much as he treasures his roles as a guitarist, composer, and producer, Cory Wong fashions himself "a hype man," first and foremost. Living up to this classification, he slings a Stratocaster and hurls "dad jokes" from the stage with the same panache, poise, and power.

"For me, it's all about the listener's experience," he explains. "I want them to have a visceral response like: 'I feel better,' 'That was really fun,' or 'I got to escape for an hour.' You'll hear my voice through the guitar, but I'm just a hype man. To uplift audiences with instrumental music that has no singing or lyrics is a fun challenge. I'm trying to solve the riddle. If I can get one person to feel good this way, it's a success.

Straight out of Minneapolis, Cory positioned himself as music's answer to motivational speakers like Tony Robbins since emerging in 2011. Head-spinning rhythm guitar wizardry, technical ebullience, laugh-out-loud jokes, and radiance on stage established him as both a sought-after collaborator and celebrated solo artist alike. He lent his talents to television programs such as The Voice at the dawn of his career. After an impromptu meeting at the weekly jam hosted by Prince's rhythm section (where the Purple One often either performed or watched), he crossed paths with Vulfpeck who welcomed him as a frequent collaborator and member of the band. Solidifying a fruitful partnership, the group named their most popular instrumental track "Cory Wong," in tribute. Lighting up the stage in the band everywhere from Red Rocks Amphitheatre to Madison Square Garden, he remains a cornerstone of Vulfpeck's storied gigs.

"I try to feature the guitar, but I don't force myself into being the star of every song," he says. "The instrument plays an appropriate role. It's not all flash. I'm bringing rhythm to the forefront where it's not so shreddy. I refer to it as 'Covert chops.' I'm doing things that are sneakily hard, but they lay in the cut. I allow the song to breathe and present myself as more of a composer rather than a guitar player."

In the end, Cory transmits joy in its purest form through the guitar.

"The guiding light is to impart a feeling of joy," he leaves off. "I want people to experience instrumental music in a different way. This is hype. It's more than just guitar."

  • Mind blowing

by Roderic on 2/25/239:30 CLUB - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

What a combo! Tight tight tight. Exquisite vocals by Trousdale. Virtuosity beyond compare from Victor, Cory, and the band. Was that trombonist actually circle breathing??? - I can't believe I witnessed that!! Tiny band?!?!? The drummer was actually using tiny sticks. The flautist - WTF?! My family and I were spellbound. And when Cory and Victor burst into Stomping Ground, I nearly cried (I love ya, Bela Fleck, but they nailed it). "halftime show" interview was genius - happy audience and band gets a rest. cool uniforms :) happiness all around. Thanks you - worth every penny!

Horn section - 10 out of 10 Bass - 10 Rhythm - 10 Guitar - 11 Eric Gales and Cory Wong. Maybe the best value ever for a ticket I've ever bought to anything

  • Just a GREAT show!

by Charlie on 2/23/23The Ritz - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

The opening band, Trousdale, was excellent. And Cory and crew were over-the-top outstanding!

  • Awesome

The entire concert was awesome. Trousdale was great. You should give them a listen. Cory and Victor were incredible together. And a surprise showing of Eric Gales was great.

  • BEST CONCERT OF MY LIFE

by MC and Stu on 2/22/23The Ritz - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

I have gone to hundreds and hundreds of concerts... decades... this was THE BEST I have ever been to.. Cory - OMG - Victor Wooten - brilliant bass virtuoso - no idea what to expect from Trousdale but they were marvelous and if all that wasn't enough, guest walk-on guitar shredder ERIC GALES... Together and everyone else in the room were blown away. There are simply no words to describe it. if you get to see this combo - go...

  • An Amazing show full of surprises!

by Dobrotone on 2/22/23The Ritz - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

Eric Gales sat in and he is God. Victor Wooten rules the world.. Cory is very entertaining, energetic and full of gags to keep you on your toes.

  • Felt the groove all night long

by Skipper on 2/22/23The Ritz - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

The opening act, Trousdale, got the energy pumping early with a healthy mix of energy and emotion. Next up was Wong and company, immediately starting off with a bang. After a few songs he brought out a surprise guest, Eric Gales, who proceeded to lay down one of the best guitar solos I've witnessed. Once Eric left, Cory brought back Trousdale to sing on a few of his songs which was awesome. Then came in The Man, The Myth, The Legend, Victor Wooten and everything turned up to 11. Could not recommend this highly enough.

  • Cory Wong Was Awesome

by John on 2/22/23The Ritz - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

If you ever have a chance to see Cory Wong live, then do it. If not, you're missing out. This little gig was $35. They played for like 3 hours which Included the opening act. Most bands today only play for 1 hour each. Cory Wong easily played 2 hours worth of music and brought soecial guests to on stage. 2nd best gig I've ever been to.

  • Real musicians are not dead

by Tj on 2/21/23Tabernacle - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

It was so refreshing to see real musicians on stage I bought tickets for two of my old band mates from the 70s and 80s kto go to the show with me. They was astonished by his musicianship and his band. They could not stop thanking me for bringing them. Boys night out was a success. Thanks, Cory.

Top to bottom the best live show I've ever seen and or heard. The musicality was out of this world but Cory, Victor, and the band made the experience extremely fun and engaging. Bucket-list level show. If you enjoy music of this caliber you have to try to get tickets!
