Intimate venue; good location; small seats

by J.Saxe on 1/15/20Minetta Lane Theatre - New York

Great area in Manhattan. Common’s Audible storytelling musical special was indeed special!! He’s a professional. Minetta Lane Theatre has tiny seats, too small for someone 6’2”, and also too close together in all respects but I sat in the front row of the balcony center so it was worth it to have my knees smashed in the front by the wall and my elbows crowded by larger attendees; worth noting an inconvenient balcony entrance layout where one has to walk across the entire row to get to seats on far right end, which is annoying to everyone when you’re late; the venue is so intimate that It seemed like the artist could reach out and touch our hands, so that’s awesome, but I was literally blinded by a couple of the lighting production moments obviously made with crazy-bright lights for normally-larger theaters... Probably no bad seats but I had an especially good one. If shows of this caliber continue to get booked, I’ll definitely try to see if GA (?) or orchestra main level (or anyplace!) seating provides a different sitting experience, but front of the balcony is hard to beat.

    Touched my soul....

by Mjay on 1/15/20Minetta Lane Theatre - New York

Such an amazing date night experience with my wife! Well written, well produced, well performed. The amount of love and time that went into this show is evident. The whole team deserves all the accolades that can be given to them. As a huge fan of Common as an artist and as a human for such a long time, it was a real treat to see the influence his father had on him come to life on stage. Having a similar dynamic with my own father, I can relate on many levels. If you are ever able to see this show, don't hesitate to attend. You will leave nourished and inspired.

The Journey is Paramount 2 Success

by Ms. Candy on 1/15/20Minetta Lane Theatre - New York

This was a phenomenal production. The monologues between each set of songs were thoughtful and reach the audience. We all can relate to not having a family member or a friend when we needed them. The lighting was very precise. The musical blend of DJ and live band was amazing and again touched the audience and made us participate.

So nice I saw it twice...

by Devin on 1/15/20Minetta Lane Theatre - New York

I loved Common's performance so much that as soon as I left Saturday night's show I bought a ticket for Sunday's show. It was a fantastic blend of story telling and music and it was unlike any hip hop experience I've seen. Common shows us his whole self on stage with an intimate and authentic performance that reminds us just how (multi) talented he is. Well-freakin-done!

    AMAZING

by A. on 1/14/20Minetta Lane Theatre - New York

I’ve seen Common so many times before. As usual he never disappoints. This performance was so engaging and raw and honest. I absolutely fall in love with Rashid more and more after each show and this one wasn’t any different. The venue was great and not a bad seat in there. Truly a great hip hop and poetic experience. Loved it. Love Common.

    Hip Hop meets Broadway.

by Black Magic on 1/14/20Minetta Lane Theatre - New York

This was a perfect mix of the evolution of the man, his music, and his acting. I was not sure what it was going to be but I was impressed and engaged from the beginning to the end. There was a truth in his message and his music. The live band and his back up singers were equally amazing. There were no low points to this show. It just got better and better. It was perfectly timed as well. It was not too short or too long. I felt like Common intended to take us on a journey and he did. The journey was complete, heartfelt, and appreciated. Five mics for the music and five stars for the overall show. Well done!!!!

It's a Precious Gem of Artistry!

COMMON: BLUEBIRD MEMORIES: A Journey Through Lyrics and Life! Audible at Minetta Lane Theater, NYC January 10-12, 2020 Beautiful People, Last Night Carol Maillard and Louise Robinson, two of the founding and current members of #SweetHoneyInTheRock attended Common: BLUEBIRD MEMORIES: A Journey Through Lyrics and Life Audible at Minetta Lane Theater in NYC. We were blessed to see and speak with Whoopi Goldberg whom we all love and saw many incredible people including Nadine Khan, DJ John Michael, Justin Emeka (the show's Associate Director) Zora Howard, Carmine, Nicole Hegeman, and one of the producers, Audible's Preston Copley. Visionary Dan Katz (Founder and Executive Chairman of Audible) writes in the exquisite program... "I'm excited to welcome you to this. Tonight you will experience Common's meditation on the complexities of fatherlessness, art, masculinity and black consciousness....This performance is the latest in a series of pieces written and performed to the intimate Audible aesthetic that millions around the world enjoy everyday.... A heartfelt thanks..." In BLUEBIRD MEMORIES, Common, speaking to his Father took us on a creative rollercoaster of disappointment, forgiveness, growth, healing, hope, personal relationships and Love. No one in the audience was prepared for the integrity and truth in this theatrical and musical performance. We sat with baited breath, clapped, cried, danced in our seats and even sang. The lighting and music was phenomenal! Louise Robinson said "Common spoke from his heart. He connected us to this piece by allowing us to revisit his relationship with his mostly absent father who is now with the ancestors, but whom he loved dearly. Everyone in the audience was enthralled by his storytelling as it touched on the humanness of our shared pain, regrets and Joy." Carol Maillard said "Just Amazing and Profound." And on a lighter note she jokingly said to Common "What's Your Name? He answered Rashid. And we all laughed! Later Whoopi Goldberg (who said she loved the show too) asked us had we met Common. Carol, Louise and I said Yes in unison and laughed again! If you are able, please go see Common's BLUEBIRD MEMORIES at Minetta Lane. Also plan to get it on Audible. It's a Precious Gem of Artistry! Oh What a Beautiful Inspiring Evening of Hope and Healing! Live & Love...
