About

The Commodores are one of the most iconic funk and soul bands to ever bust a groove, riding the rhythm section since 1968 and remaining musical innovators to this day. In concert, Walter Orange, William “WAK” King and J.D. Nicholas take audiences on a tour through the roots of funky soul. "Machine Gun," a grooving instrumental from their debut album, feels as fresh today as the day the tracks were laid down. Orange’s instantly recognizable voice reminds everyone that she's a "Brick House," one of the band's most recognizable hit singles.

The Commodores first met at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. Four years later, they were signed to Motown Records after opening on tour for the Jackson 5. They focused on their own unique brand of Southern funk, rising to the top with chart-toppers including “Slippery When Wet” and “Just to Be Close to You.” Now, backed by their five-piece band, The Mean Machine, The Commodores share their unique vocal stylings through even more of their number one hits, including “Three Times a Lady” and “Still,” two more of their seven songs that have topped the US R&B charts. “Nightshift” also garnered the band a Grammy award. From a performing point of view, Orange, King and Nicholas simply can’t be slowed down. They know they have soul. They were 2003 inductees in the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, and have earned an American Music Award. More than anything, however, The Commodores leave it all on stage every time they play, because they know that they are able to write their own ticket through their music.

The Commodores - a must see concert!

by Crystalgate on 1/17/10Emerald Queen Casino - Tacoma

I have always loved the Commodores music, but had never been to one of their concerts. This was a first for me - but will not be the last! From the special effects, to the band, to the Commodores themselves - this is a class act, filled with excitement, memories, and audience participation!

    Commodores were AWESOME

by BlondeMouse on 1/17/10Emerald Queen Casino - Tacoma

The show was awesome & I enjoyed it a lot. These guys put on a very entertaining & wonderful performance. The back up band for the Commodores was also excellent. I was impressed by the high level of security at the Emerald Queen Casino (located in Fife, WA, near Tacoma) as it made me feel very comfortable. The staff of Emerald Queen is to be commended, as they were always present, attentive & very helpful. The shuttle busses just prior to & just following the shows could be improved with more frequent availability between the casino/showroom & the casino/hotel. Other than that, it is highly recommended, in my opinion. This was my first time at Emerald Queen, and hopefully not my last, as I will want to go again for more entertainment & enjoyment.

    Great Show!!

by lilbeth on 1/17/10Emerald Queen Casino - Tacoma

I had a great time at the Commodores show last night. It was so much fun to hear the songs I listened to in my teens and twenties. I thought they sounded really good and I loved the dancing and showmanship. After all these years they are a very tight group and know what they are doing. I walked out saying I'd see them again. LOVED THEM!! LOVED THE FIREWORKS!!

    Commodores still FABULOUS!

by SeattleLady on 1/17/10Emerald Queen Casino - Tacoma

I went having loved their music since they began and was NOT disappointed! They played every song I loved and performed them WELL! They are clearly professionals, have an excellent band behind them and all sing on key. 2 of the 3 commodores are original (of course we know where the 3rd original member went) and the 3rd did the original artist justice. Didn't miss Lionel at all (don't get me wrong, I love Lionel). Excellent performance, they got the whole audience on their feet and of course Brick House brough the house down. I will definitely see them again if they come to town! Only negative was the venue. There are 2 large screens and the one on the left (my side) was out. No excuse for that in a professional venue. The Emerald Queen Casino should have offered us SOMETHING for that fiasco. But the Commodores' performance was excellent! Thoroughly enjoiyed it!

concert was very short. When they came back out, the Tunes" were unrecognizable. Just playin background music. They gave all they had in less than 1hr. The rest was hand clapping, and cheerleading. Only two original members. But it was fun.

    It was OK

by ronn1 on 1/17/10Emerald Queen Casino - Tacoma

I just wish they would do more singing instead of directing the crowd to join in and sing or wave arms. Start the darn song and finish the darn song. I don't care to listen to the fellow behind me bellowing. But, My Wife really enjoyed it.

    Commodores were incredible

by Nicequietstorm on 1/17/10Emerald Queen Casino - Tacoma

The Commodores sounded even better in person and their performance was truly amazing. Their band, Mean Machine, and the Commodores had so much energy and it was evident throughout the entire performance. A definite crowd pleaser and you will not be disappointed.

The Commodores, we grew up with them and all the other great groups in the heyday of the Motown Era. Today's "Commodores" are performing in the 21st Century with some degree of the 60' and 70's original flavor still intact. My wife and I are from that timeframe and cherish all their hits and favorites. Although the Commodores performed up to their professional and entertaining standard, the quality of the overall sound system was sorely lacking. Individual solos were muffled, and lacked the clarity to deliver the true quality of the vocals. Too bad the EQC does not provide a better sound system that equals the talent it presents. The video presentation was not in sync with the audio. The clarity of the images was very poor, and one of the screens was totally inoperative! If this review offered a star rating for audio/video, I would have to stretch to give it a 2 1/2 at best! We spent almost $150 for the two of us in the VIP section and honestly felt it was worth half the price. Overall it was OK, but not what we expected to get.

    Commodores Still Command!

by CC1959 on 7/14/09Beau Rivage Theatre - Biloxi

If you worry about whether The Commodores still have what it takes to command your interest, attention, and attendance, DON'T. I saw the band back in their hey-day with the original line-up when they were tearing up the charts with every single release. Now more than thirty years later, those songs still sound fresh has The Commodores roll on with two original members and the unbelievable catalog of hits that will have you dancing in the aisle while jogging down memory lane. And having the original voice behind "Brick House" at the party didn't hurt! And speaking of party, the Beau Rivage was the perfect place for us to enjoy an intimate yet electric evening with this legendary group. The Commodores brought an A game that made revisiting so many songs from the soundtrack of my life the perfect way to not only spend an evening, but celebrate my 50th birthday. It's good to see these guys still on the road, something I remain inspired to do myself!!!
