Great show! These two venues should keep getting together!
After a long week at work, this was just what my wife and I needed to lift our spirits. The show was light and familiar. The connection between performers and audience was easy and sincere. The Columbus Jazz Orchestra may have been the stronger of the two groups, but the Columbus Gay Men's Chorus held their own. Of particular note were their renditions of "Mack the Knife", "The Boy from Ipanema", and "My Way". This was an evening well spent.
Both the Columbus Jazz Orchestra and the Columbus Gay Mens Chorus are outstanding organizations and I am so proud to have such quality groups in my city.. However fabulous this concert was (and it was indeed fabulous) each group stands so strong on their own, they do not need to perform together. I attend each groups concerts every season and am a patron of both. This "Night in Vegas" concert just left me wanting to hear more of each group.......... alone, I can't wait for the next season to begin for both groups so I can spend delightful evenings with each of them.
A delightful evening, the music was wonderful, and entertaining.
Combine the Columbus Gay Men's Chorus and the Columbus Jazz Band and you get one great evening. From lively and fun to amazing solos, this is a wonderful show.
Amazing music...amazing musicians...unforgettable!
I love the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, and really was looking forward to this concert. Unfortunately, it was somewhat of a disappointment. The first half--the Cole Porter stuff, with the whole orchestra, Byron Stripling, and Bobby Floyd--was CJO's usual amazing job. We found it tremendously enjoyable. However, the second half was not so much. The singer thought much more of himself than the audience did. While he did a serviceable job with the songs of Nat "King" Cole, the CJO was pretty much nonexistent for that second half, and Byron and Bobby were not even onstage (I happened to see Bobby leaving at intermission). Obviously, when the CJO contracted with Keith David to sing, he insisted on using his own keyboard player as part of the deal. At any rate, my advice is to go and see the first half, and go do something else after intermission.
The performance of the best of "Porgy & Bess" was absolutely wonderful. The CJO was, as always, magnificent; the individual solos were incredible, and the singers outstanding. Only downside: drunken individuals in the audience behind us (why let individuals, obviously already inebriated) bring drinks into the performance). This is NOT an "outdoor concert" and one expects more decorum (and better supervision by the ushers).
The jazz members really loved playing, songs and singers were great
What a treasure of talent we have in Columbus Ohio!!! Once again CJO has delivered an afternoon of outstanding music, lively interaction, fun and a little music history on the side! We loved Dave Powers and are continuing to enjoy his CDs alongside that of the CJO. (When will we get a new one, CJO???) "Ella" was great and, of course, Bobby Floyd was unusually outstanding. The Powers-Floyd piano piece was so much fun!! Last, but definitely not least, Byron Striping... he is an amazing talent!! Indeed he and our CJO are local and professional!!
Byron, Orchestra, & Guests were good......... would have liked more Bobby Floyd
Carmen Bradford is the best jazz singer I have ever heard here in Columbus and I've heard quite a few! Ella Fitzgerald would have been proud. And Byron's trumpet playing and singing made us feel that Louis Armstrong is still among us. Dave Powers was engaging and entertaining. The Columbus Jazz Arts Group is a gem and my 17 and 21-year-old children share my enthusiasm.
This CJO performance was amazing, as they always are.
I'm not a jazz fan, but everytime I see the Jazz Orchestra I love it. The program I saw February 28 was particularly good. Byron Stripling is always entertaining, but the musical guests were great too.
Absolutely wonderful. Once again, the Columbus Jazz Orchestra brought it home and brought the house down as it did. The musical stylings of Byron Stipling, Carmen Brandenberg and Dave Powers fit the bill perfectly. A wonderful evening in a beautiful theater! Each and every member of the CJO is amazingly talented and it is a joy to watch them perform their craft. Columbus is, indeed, blessed!
After a lackluster offering this season, CJO definitely "had their game on" for this show. Good to again see some exciting vocalists to enhance the incredible talents of this top-notch group of talented musicians. Byron Striplings' talents as a musician and showman are evident as he engaged the audience completely. The precious Carmen Bradford was endearing in her personal tribute to Ella Fitzgerald and her voice did Ella's music justice. Dave Powers' energy shot a very youthful verve into the performance. At the end of the show, we (and apparently everyone around us) were buzzing with adrenaline! THANKS CJO!
That was the best concert I have ever attended! I've seen this orchestra previously, but this time it was at a whole new level! Dave Powers and Carman Bradford were amazing. Byron Stripling was entertaining as always and the final piano duet by Bobby Floyd and Dave Powers was like nothing I've ever seen.. To know that both Byron and Carman had performed with Count Basie and Carman with Ella Fitzgerald herself, made you feel like you were witnessing Jazz Royalty reincarnated. Carman and Byron's duets were intense. If you miss this concert series, you've missed it all!!!!
My wife and I enjoyed the performance immensely. Yours truly was a high school cornet player and my better half a saxaphonist, so we appreciated the instrumental performances all the more. Bruce was also admirable on the vocals, and the performances on the keyboards was also especially notable. And we can't forget Byron, whose personality, energy, and musicianship added something special as well. We've already ordered our tickets for Louis, Ella and friends!
The Columbus Jazz Orchestra with guests Lew Soloff , Lou Marini and Bruce Wermuth gave us one fabulous performance that just hit us up along side the head. Spinning Wheel made us dizzy with awe. Blood, Sweat, and Tears, Chicago, and CJO are a match made in heaven.
Byron: This concert was way, way beyond amazing. My wife and I have attended the Columbus Jazz Orchestra concerts for several years. Each time the Orchestra seems to take its performance to a new level. But this time you and the Orchestra really knocked the ball out of the park. I cannot imagine how the Orchestra could reach a higher level. And, as was noted by the singer, the Orchestra is truly a national treasure. Columbus is very, very fortunate to have it. Please, please bring this concert back next year!
