Columbus Blue Jackets History

The Columbus Blue Jackets—whose name pays tribute to Ohio's substantial contributions to the Union army during the Civil War—joined the NHL as an expansion franchise in 2000.

The Blue Jackets played their first 12 seasons as a member of the Western Conference, making their first foray into the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2008-2009 led by All-Star winger Rick Nash and Rookie of the Year goaltender Steve Mason.

NHL realignment saw the team move to the Eastern Conference in 2013-2014, and the Blue Jackets have since collected six winning seasons and qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs five times. Columbus was one of just three teams to earn playoff berths in four consecutive seasons from 2016-2020, joining the Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals.

In 2018-2019, the eighth-seeded Blue Jackets faced off against the Presidents' Trophy-winning and top-seeded Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round of the playoffs. The Blue Jackets shocked the heavily-favored Lightning as they became the first team in NHL history to earn a four-game sweep in the first round of the playoffs against a team with the league's best regular-season record.

  • Cold.....colder then usual

by AmeP on 2/10/20Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 3 out of 5

I get it’s hockey and it’s going to be cold But it felt as if there was a vent blowing down on our section with ice cold air. The whole section had winter coats on the whole time and still shivering. I’ve been to other games and chilly but not shivering cold like this game. LOVED the hockey for everyone and Pride night event! That’s why we went. I’ll for sure wear 5 layers instead of 4 next time!

  • Club Seats

    by G. D. on 1/17/20Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

This was our first time getting Club Level seats and WOW! We really loved the set-up! I don't enjoy sitting through an entire game so is was great to be able to walk around and still see the game, we actually stood through half of the game at one of the little tables drinking our beer and chatting while watching a fantastic game. I wish I could afford the club level seats all the time, but they are very pricey. These tickets were actually a Christmas present for my husband, he absolutely loved it! It was also great to have so many bars and food stands so close to where we were. The only thing that I would suggest is to put a BrewDog stand up there, we had to either go upstairs or downstairs to get another beer. They did serve a couple of their beers in cans but not the kind we like.

Nationwide Arena is a great venue and the staff is awesome! This night was Fight Cancer Night and everyone received this wrist thing to wear. It lit up during pregame and during the game in different colors so that the whole arena lit up in color. So cool! Columbus Blue Jackets are a class act!

by Mickey on 11/5/19Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 3 out of 5

Went on a Saturday night to a Blue Jackets game and was very disappointed. It was a girls night out and was not a fun experience at all! Team was in slo-mo and crowd was quiet. Have been there in the past and loved it. Don’t know what happened this year. Wondering if there are new people running it!

  • Road Trip Hockey!

I love fitting in a CBJ hockey game every time I visit Columbus.

  • Leafs @ CBJ Opening Night

    by K8 on 10/8/19Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Section 117, Row U offers a good angle to the view of the ice and we've chosen to sit here for a few games now. Seatmates this time around were a little drunk and angry about the Leafs fans, but at this point we've all gotta know Leafs fans are going to travel. Hearing the cheers might be annoying, but listening to everyone complain about it is just as bad. Game itself had some good moments, even with the loss.
