Columbus Blue Jackets History

The Columbus Blue Jackets—whose name pays tribute to Ohio's substantial contributions to the Union army during the Civil War—joined the NHL as an expansion franchise in 2000.

The Blue Jackets played their first 12 seasons as a member of the Western Conference, making their first foray into the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2008-2009 led by All-Star winger Rick Nash and Rookie of the Year goaltender Steve Mason.

NHL realignment saw the team move to the Eastern Conference in 2013-2014, and the Blue Jackets have since collected six winning seasons and qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs five times. Columbus was one of just three teams to earn playoff berths in four consecutive seasons from 2016-2020, joining the Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals.

In 2018-2019, the eighth-seeded Blue Jackets faced off against the Presidents' Trophy-winning and top-seeded Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round of the playoffs. The Blue Jackets shocked the heavily-favored Lightning as they became the first team in NHL history to earn a four-game sweep in the first round of the playoffs against a team with the league's best regular-season record.

  • Fantastic Arena and Fans

by Donnie Brooke on 1/24/22Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

We traveled into Columbus from Pittsburgh for the game. The arena and even the arena district felt very safe and clean. The fans were great which created a fun vibe for the game, even when the crowd was divided. Seats were a bit narrow though. Tall guys with long legs beware. I would definitely go back to Nationwide arena to see the Blue Jackets.

  • Awesome Game!

by Katd on 1/11/22Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Easy to get in with the Ticketmaster app. They had masks for folks who didn't have one (yay!) Food line was quick. Loved the towels we got. Went to the store afterward, bought 2 CBJ masks (they ran out, need more!). Were told to use the door going outside, but it was on the wrong side of the arena for us, fell on the ice on the sidewalk. :-( Last time I go to the store after the game. Scoring was exciting and so was the play. Support for first responders was AWESOME.

We "splurged" on Club seats this time and are so glad we did! The seats were comfortable, they were easy to find, and having the opportunity to order food and drinks through a server was great! We typically sit in Section 203 but will definitely splurge on Club seats again!

Outstanding arena, reasonably priced, quality vendors

  • Mike Todd needs a mask!

by Mike Todd needs a mask! on 10/19/21Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

If the Mayor’s rule requires every patron, security staff, concession worker, goal patrol, ice crew, and off ice official to wear a mask, Mike Todd needs to wear one too! It’s disgusting to fans that he feels he’s better than the rest of us. Lead by example.

  • Everything but a win!

by moyerintipp on 3/2/20Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

The Blue Jackets game against the Wild went very well and was a good experience from the event and atmosphere. Unfortunately, the Blue Jackets did not play well and the game was over fairly early on. We stayed until the very end though and drowned our sorrows at the Whistle and Keg.

  • Awesome Game

The Jackets rarely disappoint. It’s always a fun time at NWA. Everything from the player interactions during warmups to chatting with the concession workers is always a great experience. Great family night!

  • Only for short people

by Minion on 2/18/20Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

We sat in the last row of 118. Seemed like the contractor said, 'hey, we can fit another row here'. Yeah, only if you have shorter than normal legs. When we sat down our knees were pressed up against the seat in front. Ther poor guy next to us, who was about 6', lasted one period and never came back. Not comfortable at all!
