Columbus Blue Jackets History

The Columbus Blue Jackets—whose name pays tribute to Ohio's substantial contributions to the Union army during the Civil War—joined the NHL as an expansion franchise in 2000.

The Blue Jackets played their first 12 seasons as a member of the Western Conference, making their first foray into the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2008-2009 led by All-Star winger Rick Nash and Rookie of the Year goaltender Steve Mason.

NHL realignment saw the team move to the Eastern Conference in 2013-2014, and the Blue Jackets have since collected six winning seasons and qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs five times. Columbus was one of just three teams to earn playoff berths in four consecutive seasons from 2016-2020, joining the Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals.

In 2018-2019, the eighth-seeded Blue Jackets faced off against the Presidents' Trophy-winning and top-seeded Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round of the playoffs. The Blue Jackets shocked the heavily-favored Lightning as they became the first team in NHL history to earn a four-game sweep in the first round of the playoffs against a team with the league's best regular-season record.

  • Great Arena in a Great Area

by Bruins Fan on 3/8/22Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

We went to the blue jackets game on 3/5/21 to see the Boston Bruins. The Arena was in a nice area. It was easy to get to. The arena was clean and the staff was friendly. The Weather was nice that weekend and we were able to walk back to our hotel, which was about a 20 minute walk. Loved the game!

  • CBJ vs Bruins/Rick Nash Retirement of #61

by Chris on 3/8/22Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

The ceremony for Rick Nash was done very well. It was wonderful to see other CBJ people there to honor and speak about him. I was glad that Nick Foligno was honored tool. The game was intense and played well. The only thing that would have made it better is if CBJ came away with a win.

  • Amazing experience

by Tina on 3/8/22Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

We were visiting from Windsor ontario Celebrating our sons 8th birthday! The atmosphere of this arena is electric.. my son had the time of his life and so did we! The players interact with the kids during warm ups and it was a definite highlight of my sons night! The arena itself is absolutely amazing… the food was great, the atmosphere was amazing, and the cannon going off after every goal was a HUGE hit!!! We were privileged to be among the fans during the retirement of the Rick Nash jersey! All in all it was an absolute amazing night!!!!! We will definitely be back many times to support the Columbus blue jackets!!!!!!

  • Great game!

by Mary on 3/8/22Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

This was our first CBJ game, coming in from out of town. We were contacted by somebody with the team to make sure we knew everything we needed before we arrived in Columbus. She alerted me to the jersey ceremony, but didn't tell me that it was about 90 minutes before the game started. Other than that, everything was great and we had a wonderful time. My fiance is already talking about making the trip out for more games.

  • Blue Jackets NHL retirement of 61 Nash Jersey

Great easy access to Stadium. Thanks Ticketmaster. 5 stars!!!!

  • Really disappointed in Nationwide Arena.

by DiDi on 3/7/22Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 3 out of 5

Have sat in similar seats in other arenas & could see all the action. This time we couldn't see action at the other end of the ice.

  • Blue Jackets vs. Penguins

by Dani on 3/2/22Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

My husband and I had a great time at the game. The concessions were good and the atmosphere was fabulous.

  • Fantastic Time

by Grovehl on 3/2/22Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Had a wonderful time at the game! Fantastic seats! No issues with the transaction nor with getting into the arena. My advice though: don’t get up to use the bathroom or else you’ll miss your opportunity to get in the Jumbotron while your Friends do!! Lol

  • Asleep at the Cannon

by Jeffbo on 3/2/22Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 3 out of 5

I’ve been to many sporting events but the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena put me to sleep while the game was not in play. Pregame was the worst I would compare it to being in a art museum/library. If it wasn’t for the cannon that only got fired twice in the 3-2 loss I might still be there sleeping. In game host did not fit the narrative as he may have costarred in Fargo. Arena was beautiful and food/beer options plentiful. Just a little tweaking to raise the excitement level would bring it up to speed with a world class organization like the Pittsburgh Penguins.

  • Great atmosphere!

by Darrin on 2/25/22Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Upper deck seats but still a great view. Concessions & restrooms nearby.

  • Sound the cannon 7 times

    by paulers88 on 2/23/22Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Fun game, fun arena, good food and local craft beer options

Great seats, great venue, great time. Tickets were easy to use and the arena staff were friendly. I'll be back to attend more Blue Jacket games. Parking is very convenient.

  • amazing

    by T. H. on 2/23/22Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

The game was awesome. The Jackets one 7 to 3. The canon was a sweet touch to the game when they came out on the ice and when they scored goals and when they won.

  • Experience

by Kaley on 2/23/22Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Always a great time! Love the blue jackets ! Never a dull moment

  • Wonderful experience - Section 115 Lexus Lounge

by Miguel on 1/31/22Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Only criticism is that there was no clear instruction that Lexus Lounge ticketholders should enter through the designated entrance as I found it from the seating area; otherwise it was an optimal experience with very helpful ushers (one of whom found my glove that I had dropped)

  • It was my second time to go to the hockey game.

by William on 1/26/22Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

I had such a nice time. It was my second hockey game I have been in my lifetime. The first hockey I went was in January 2006.

  • Good

by BSmit on 1/24/22Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

The game and everything was good but was not delivered the tickets until almost 30 minutes before puck drop. Can you please fix that please. Thank you!

  • Promos should not keep u from getting to your seat!!!

    by B.R. on 1/24/22Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 3 out of 5

The game was great! Love coming to columbus for jackets games. The only draw back and i feel its a big one as you will drop a good 500+ bucks for tickets, snacks, drinks, dinner and gas getting there. 2 times promos kept us from getting back to our seats. Missed a goal and a penalty. Section 101.

  • Great event experience...

by Gregg on 1/24/22Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

Nationwide Areana is a fantastic and comfortable venue to take in an event. Our seats were great for the hockey game. Parking and concessions were plentiful and convenient. Good time!

  • Line of Sight

    by M. W. on 1/24/22Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 3 out of 5

These are not good wheelchair accessible seats. When the folks in front of me stood up, they blocked half the ice.
