Columbus Blue Jackets History

The Columbus Blue Jackets—whose name pays tribute to Ohio's substantial contributions to the Union army during the Civil War—joined the NHL as an expansion franchise in 2000.

The Blue Jackets played their first 12 seasons as a member of the Western Conference, making their first foray into the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2008-2009 led by All-Star winger Rick Nash and Rookie of the Year goaltender Steve Mason.

NHL realignment saw the team move to the Eastern Conference in 2013-2014, and the Blue Jackets have since collected six winning seasons and qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs five times. Columbus was one of just three teams to earn playoff berths in four consecutive seasons from 2016-2020, joining the Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals.

In 2018-2019, the eighth-seeded Blue Jackets faced off against the Presidents' Trophy-winning and top-seeded Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round of the playoffs. The Blue Jackets shocked the heavily-favored Lightning as they became the first team in NHL history to earn a four-game sweep in the first round of the playoffs against a team with the league's best regular-season record.

  • Great arena, terrible fans

    by Tabby F. on 4/16/23Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

CBJ arena was stunning! A very well kept and expensive looking venue. Food and beverage choices were great. CBJ fans on the other hand, not great. Understandably upset as there was more opponent fans in the stands than CBJ. But, the lack of class and drinks being spilled on us was insane. We ignored them the whole time, and they persisted to get a rise out of our section, most of them leaving before their team even had a chance to win. Talking terribly about their own players. Stay at home if you’re going to just complain the whole time. I am a firm believer that if you want to talk trash about your own team, stay at home. If you go to a game and you’re paying so much to see YOUR team, have fun and realize it’s just a game. Especially since it was one of the last games of the season and they weren’t going to the playoffs.

  • Half way ok time

by Ajo on 4/16/23Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 1 out of 5

Doors open at 6, sat in sun for 45 minutes, got 2 waters and 3 pops inside for over 35 dollars, game was good. Had several women behind us yelling the WHOLEgame at the visiting team (we were rooting for), f this and f that, very vocal and no one said anything to them and i had my 3 disabled children there

  • Tight seats

by Bob on 4/11/23Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 3 out of 5

Everything was great, except the seats were lacking in width and legroom.

  • CBJ review

by Kathy on 4/4/23Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Me and my best friend (who has never been to a game) enjoyed the game. She was amazed. We wish we would have won.

  • Blue Jackets vs Kraken Game (3-3-23)

    by Bubba H on 3/6/23Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Always a good time at Nationwide Arena. Professional venue with professional staff. The team usually loses but the Arena and staff are top notch. Take your family here.

  • Bluejackets game, club level seats

by Edy on 2/19/23Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Really great seats, enjoyed the game. Loved that there was food right behind our seats.

  • Great experience, tight seating

by KM on 2/17/23Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

Had a great experience for the CBJ game! The arena worked efficiently once the doors were opened, including food/drink providers. Clean venue with very friendly staff, plenty of bathrooms. The only downsides to the experience were the seats were a tight fit, and the arena did not open at 6 PM as posted online (opened at 6:30 PM) so a large group was waiting in the rain.

  • Great arena

    by Hockey fan21 on 2/15/23Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Good time all around. Nice arena and surrounding area !

  • Will not be back

by Don't want too. on 2/13/23Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 1 out of 5

I will not come back, as there was problems from parking garage to trying to get in the door with tickets to no one wanting to help us find the seats, to the people around us, to back to the parking garage.

  • Worth it for the light shows!

by TaylorPlayz on 2/13/23Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

The light shows were amazing! The game was a little boring, but the goalies were excellent.

  • Great time

by Shelley on 1/24/23Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

My husband and I just moved to Ohio from California. Our first experience at Nationwide was great

  • More Room

by TC on 1/23/23Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

Setting in 205 J1-2 at Nationwide offered more feet room as the seats had railings instead of concrete. May want to identify seats at time of sale with a bit more space to stretch out.

  • Great fun

by slc on 1/10/23Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Great night of hockey. Lots of fan interaction. Not a bad seat in the house!

  • Always Well Done

by Cincytim on 1/10/23Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

I go to 3 or 4 Blue Jackets games a year. As always, the staff, concessions, parking egress are very well done. Nicer still, this past Saturday's super exciting game added to the experience. Keep up the good work! P.S. Cincinnati Reds staff should take notes.

  • The usual

by Hipster Poppa on 1/8/23Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 3 out of 5

Price was right as a cyber Monday special. As a former STH for the CBJ, it was the usual game experience- good and bad. Nationwide still a beautiful barn with amenities but the upper bowl seats are not aging well and not built to fit modern Americans. A lady the row in front of me basically had to sit half side saddle the home game. While the game ops still needs a refresh and has a lot of the same stale schtick (guess a thing for a prize while we try to burn a corporate logo into your soul!) they did well with military appreciation night. Still, for the town that the Chill once called home, CBJ game ops experience is sad.

  • AMAZING!!!

Good fun hockey! Paying with cash did not work and finding the machine to buy a prepaid card was a pain! Why not take cash?>
