Columbus Blue Jackets History

The Columbus Blue Jackets—whose name pays tribute to Ohio's substantial contributions to the Union army during the Civil War—joined the NHL as an expansion franchise in 2000.

The Blue Jackets played their first 12 seasons as a member of the Western Conference, making their first foray into the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2008-2009 led by All-Star winger Rick Nash and Rookie of the Year goaltender Steve Mason.

NHL realignment saw the team move to the Eastern Conference in 2013-2014, and the Blue Jackets have since collected six winning seasons and qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs five times. Columbus was one of just three teams to earn playoff berths in four consecutive seasons from 2016-2020, joining the Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals.

In 2018-2019, the eighth-seeded Blue Jackets faced off against the Presidents' Trophy-winning and top-seeded Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round of the playoffs. The Blue Jackets shocked the heavily-favored Lightning as they became the first team in NHL history to earn a four-game sweep in the first round of the playoffs against a team with the league's best regular-season record.

  • Amazing crowd,Great Game!

    by Cassie2505 on 10/14/14Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

These were the cheapest tickets I could find for opening night. I wouldn't pay what I did for a regular season game. However, the team played great, nationwide got the crowd going and the employee's were accommodating as usual. Worth it!

  • Columbus Blue Jackets - Bring it on!

    by VOLfire67 on 10/4/14Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

We are avid Hockey Fans and have been to games in at least a dozen HNL venues. Blue Jackets games have been a favorite for several years. As the team grows in popularity the fans become more enthusiastic and supportive. It was a great game and the fan support was wonderful. Food costs were not as bad as many other professional sport venues.

  • Columbus Blue Jackets hockey game was amazing

by Gimpboy on 9/26/14Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

This was the first game my wife and I have seen in several years. We were able to sit in some really good seats which were about ten rows from the ice. We both thoroughly enjoyed the experience. And, for the icing on the cake, the Blue Jackets won the game against the rival Pittsburgh seats Penguins.

Great season, great team, and great fans. It was hard to see the season come to an end. But we love our Jackets even more. Looking forward to the fall to start it all over again!

    by BAH79 on 5/1/14Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Great Venue, Great Game. I've never sat in a bad seat at Nationwide arena. The short north and other surrounding areas are very nice to shop, eat, and hang out in as well before the games.

  • Jackets Have Given me the Blue Flu

by Pioneer on 5/1/14Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

The whole series was awesome - especially the Game 4 OT win for first playoff victory in franchise history --- coming back from a 3-0 deficit in the game. This Game 6 (Game 3 at Home) was tremendous with fan support throughout - the 3 goals in 5 minutes midway through third period were memorable. The speed and constant action in hockey make it a spectator's sport, especially when in Nationwide Arena and watching the physical pounding our Blue Jackets dole out! Kudos to CBJ and a great season!

  • Blew the roof off!

Nationwide Arena is the best barn in the NHL! The fans are great and the Columbus Blue Jackets organization makes every minute exciting.

Greatest sports event I personally was ever part of.

  • Nationwide (Arena) is on Blue Jackets Side!!!

    by cookielady19 on 4/29/14Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

After attending 12+ games this year, what an ending to a terrific season! Talk about a come back being down 4 to 0. CBJ showed heart, grit and determination! They didn't quit, they played as a team. No excuses, just the facts. It was sad to think this team may and probably will change over the course of the next few months. It is an honor to watch this team grow, mold and gel together before our very eyes. I even have my 32 year old son hooked on hockey now! Both games he attended were playoff games; what a way to start loving the CBJ!! Also, a big kudos to the fans! Chanting "CBJ" or "Lets go Jackets" during the game! The sound was surreal. We didn't leave until AFTER the handshakes #very classy of CBJ fans#. The team left it all on the ice and we salute you for it! NEXT YEAR we WILL go further, remember brick by brick! One day CBJ WILL hoist the cup!

  • by CBJinCLE on 4/28/14Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

I have been to the World Series, NFL Playoff Games, NCAA Basketball Tournament, amongst other events and this was by far the best sporting experience of my life. Fantastic game and a venue that was by far the best environment in sports.

  • CBJ Playoff Hockey

    by RyGuy27 on 4/27/14Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

I've been to many Columbus Blue Jackets hockey games, the arena is extremely nice and there is not a bad seat. The only thing lacking is a competitive team on the ice, which diminished the atmosphere in the crowd for years. But now, the future looks bright for the team and coming off their first ever playoff win in Pittsburgh, Nationwide Arena was ELECTRIC! From the pregame intro video, to the last horn (of a close loss) the crowd was into the game and making noise. Hockey is a fast, action packed game that the crowd in Columbus thrived on. Hockey might be a confusing game to learn at first, but once you acquire an understanding of the game, nothing compares to it. I would recommend the Blue Jackets, or hockey in general, to ANY sports fan looking to broaden their horizon. You wont regret it.

  • The most epic Jackets comeback ever!!!!

    by albert62889 on 4/27/14Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Jackets come back from three goals down to tie with under 30 seconds to play and win game 4 of the first round in OT to tie series 2-2. Best crowd I've ever saw at a hockey game. Was so loud that players did not hear the horn at end of regulation. I've sat in many different seats in the arena and there are no bad seats.
