Columbus Blue Jackets History

The Columbus Blue Jackets—whose name pays tribute to Ohio's substantial contributions to the Union army during the Civil War—joined the NHL as an expansion franchise in 2000.

The Blue Jackets played their first 12 seasons as a member of the Western Conference, making their first foray into the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2008-2009 led by All-Star winger Rick Nash and Rookie of the Year goaltender Steve Mason.

NHL realignment saw the team move to the Eastern Conference in 2013-2014, and the Blue Jackets have since collected six winning seasons and qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs five times. Columbus was one of just three teams to earn playoff berths in four consecutive seasons from 2016-2020, joining the Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals.

In 2018-2019, the eighth-seeded Blue Jackets faced off against the Presidents' Trophy-winning and top-seeded Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round of the playoffs. The Blue Jackets shocked the heavily-favored Lightning as they became the first team in NHL history to earn a four-game sweep in the first round of the playoffs against a team with the league's best regular-season record.

  • Blue Jackets Embarass Themselves

by Egor on 12/1/14Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 1 out of 5

The Blue Jackets put on a very lack luster performance against a lack luster team and managed to lose 5 to 0. It was embarassing to watch and I am sure to skate in. John Davidson made the City of Columbus a promise of a good hockey team in 2014/15. Based on that promise, Columbus responded and bought tickets - lots of tickets. Bottom line, the Chill used to put on a better show over at the Coliseum even when they lost and were only paid $600 a month. Davidson needs to deliver on his promise and do it quickly. Or will he, like many others have, take our money and run to 'hockey town' where he gives those people his best efforts?

Unfortunately, the play of the Jackets is less than optimum

  • Blue Jackets Vs. Bruins 11/21/14

by Anonymous on 11/26/14Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

Great game (Bruins won in a shootout). Nationwide Arena is pretty nice -- seating area and concourses are well-designed and maintained, but the sound system is weak.

Not a bad seat in the arena. Shootouts are awesome!

The game was awesome! Full of energy and entertainment. The Tim Horton's jacket pack was an added bonus. Loved the hat & who doesn't like and extra $10 to spend on food or beverage!

  • Too many injuries in the team

    by familyevent6 on 11/11/14Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

Good fight at the end , but team is suffering , because key players are injured. However good fight at the end of the game and it left good taste for the coming events.

  • Great experience

We had a great experience at this Arena. By far The Best Arena in the NHL! Great seats no matter where you sit, tons of bathrooms and concessions!

  • Blue Jackets vs. Maple Leafs was awesome!

    by swilly1 on 11/3/14Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

I am tremendously satisfied with the entire experience of purchasing tickets to parking at the game site. The entire process was easy and pleasant. All staff at the event were more than friendly and helpful. The seats were amazing; we sat no more than 8 feet from the ice and were up close with the action. My son was in heaven!

  • Columbus Blue Jackets

    by Coppertop10 on 11/3/14Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 2 out of 5

Neat Experience. But for the Columbus Blue Jackets as a team were disappointing. They weren't fast enough to get where they needed to be, they were not good at passing the puck to their team mates not successful more over shoots, and they couldn't score.

  • by SkilletGeek on 10/22/14Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

The Blue Jackets are an amazing team and this game was great!
