Columbus Blue Jackets History

The Columbus Blue Jackets—whose name pays tribute to Ohio's substantial contributions to the Union army during the Civil War—joined the NHL as an expansion franchise in 2000.

The Blue Jackets played their first 12 seasons as a member of the Western Conference, making their first foray into the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2008-2009 led by All-Star winger Rick Nash and Rookie of the Year goaltender Steve Mason.

NHL realignment saw the team move to the Eastern Conference in 2013-2014, and the Blue Jackets have since collected six winning seasons and qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs five times. Columbus was one of just three teams to earn playoff berths in four consecutive seasons from 2016-2020, joining the Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals.

In 2018-2019, the eighth-seeded Blue Jackets faced off against the Presidents' Trophy-winning and top-seeded Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round of the playoffs. The Blue Jackets shocked the heavily-favored Lightning as they became the first team in NHL history to earn a four-game sweep in the first round of the playoffs against a team with the league's best regular-season record.

  • Hawks v Jackets

Great game, lots of action. OT and 9 rounds of shootout.

  • nice place to visit

    by Chrisb1969 on 12/23/14Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

I bought this as a gift for my wife. And, she was absolutely thrilled to see the Hawks on the road. Plus, the Blue Jackets and their organization were fantastic. The fans were very nice, even though the crowd was split like 50/50. The people that worked there were very nice and accomadating. and the team themselves were very nice as well.

  • Not enough screeners

    by t023 on 12/23/14Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

This is a great venue for any event but there was a mixup of some sort as there were a lack of screeners at the entrances causing a half hour delay in getting into the building. Can only assume they were not anticipating a packed arena.

Great seats (last row so kids can stand without impeding anyone's view), great time, great win!

  • the extra activities during the game were lame

by jtownjacketfan on 12/23/14Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 2 out of 5

We hold 1/2 season passes but bought 4 ticket for my brother in law/fiance/me and my husband. They were in from out of town and we told them it would be a fun evening. Told them they have all kinds of marketing things going on and prizes and numbers to text, dancing Keven and it was the most lame marketing during the game I had been to. You would have thought that since it was the weekend before Christmas they would have had more giveaways - really lame - mad ad what I had to pay for tickets and then not a whole lot of other things going on = I didn't even see the kiss cam that night. You know alot of people go who really don't care about the game and enjoy the atmosphere and that was a poor display of atmosphere last Saturday. That will make me think twice before I buy extra tickets for friends to go out for a fun evening.

Incredible game!!! Can't wait to go to another. The seats were terrific and we could see everything.

This game was very entertaining to watch. I'm a Blackhawks fan and usually at this game there is a pretty even mix of Blue Jackets and Blackhawks fans. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the music. They play the music so loud that you can't hear what's being played and you have to cover your ears.

  • Best Game Ever!

by Anonymous on 12/23/14Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

I have been to over a hundred Bluejackets games but this was the best hands down. First win against Chicago in four years, nine rounds of a shootout to win the game. Very much fun!

  • Penguins/BlueJackets hockey game was thrilling!

    by RedDeb1 on 12/18/14Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Great game. Never a dull moment. several full on fights. overtime and a shootout!

  • by MBanbray on 12/18/14Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

I enjoyed the game very much. My only complaint is that the water in the bathroom for hand washing is FREEZING!

  • by Anonymous on 12/16/14Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

It was a great game! Tickets were somewhat expensive but one of the more exciting games.

  • Pathetic display

    by Roberto21 on 12/16/14Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

As a hockey fan I have been to many games. My wife and I were disgusted with the showing of an obese man dancing, then taking off his shirt and "dancing". This pathetic display was ramped up by another person pouring beer in his mouth. All this was proudly displayed on the scoreboard for all to see. This is a sports event attended by families. As an Ohioan I am embarassed by this gross display and do not understand why this is considered as entertainment when kids are in attendance. As a Pittsburgh fan I have been to many games there and not once have they stooped to that type of entertainment in a family friendly environment. The Columbus Blue Jackets Hockey Club needs to review it's priorities if it wants to be considered a "class" organization.

  • GREAT game!

by Anonymous on 12/16/14Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first time at NWA and it was wonderful! Though the BJs didn't win, it was an exciting game against the Pens! Got our money's worth!!

  • Nationwide arena is awesome

    by Nicolepghfan87 on 12/16/14Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Hockey is a blast to watch at nationwide. As a season ticket holder in pgh it is a pleasure to visit this arena. Great job Columbus!!

  • CBJ game on Saturday

by HocGame on 12/16/14Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

Awesome! CBJ and Pen fans filled the entire seating area over 17,000 plus standing room. A fight(s) within the first three minutes of the game and throughout. CBJ couldn't hold on and the Pens scored with 10.6 seconds left in the game for OT. No score during OT so to penality shots. CBJ WON!! Arena cleared out quickly afterwards.

  • by Anonymous on 12/12/14Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

As always, i had a fantastic time at the CBJ game. The seats were 5 rows from the glass in section 112 and the action was great. The seats are too close to the glass to see the action happening at the other end though. However, that's why I chose them on the "attack twice zone". Food is priced on the high side, but that's expected from venues of this type. Overall, the experience is great.

  • Disappointed in Nationwide

by OHHockeyFan on 12/1/14Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 1 out of 5

attended the CBJ vs Canucks on Friday. A water pipe burst, or perhaps a toliet overflowed, on level above so when I exited my seat to go get some food, there was water coming out of ceiling, falling on to the floor in concession area. (section 103). Not very appealing. I walked around for a while in concession area, trying to decide on some food to eat. Nothing was jumping out at me as it was usual stadium fare, and then I found a stand that advertised cubano sandwiches. I was pumped, waited 3 or 4 minutes in line, got to the counter, ordered a cubano, only to be told they were out! It was only the start of the second period?! Probably just was well - sure it probably would not taste as good as I was hoping. Enjoyed watching the hockey but every other part of the evening was disappointing; not impressed with Nationwide arena, especially after shelling ot $100 a ticket

  • Jackets are not worth the money

by LongtimeJacketFan on 12/1/14Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 2 out of 5

I hate to say it, but unless you are a fan of the opposing team, it is not worth the money to see the CBJ live.
