Columbus Blue Jackets History

The Columbus Blue Jackets—whose name pays tribute to Ohio's substantial contributions to the Union army during the Civil War—joined the NHL as an expansion franchise in 2000.

The Blue Jackets played their first 12 seasons as a member of the Western Conference, making their first foray into the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2008-2009 led by All-Star winger Rick Nash and Rookie of the Year goaltender Steve Mason.

NHL realignment saw the team move to the Eastern Conference in 2013-2014, and the Blue Jackets have since collected six winning seasons and qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs five times. Columbus was one of just three teams to earn playoff berths in four consecutive seasons from 2016-2020, joining the Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals.

In 2018-2019, the eighth-seeded Blue Jackets faced off against the Presidents' Trophy-winning and top-seeded Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round of the playoffs. The Blue Jackets shocked the heavily-favored Lightning as they became the first team in NHL history to earn a four-game sweep in the first round of the playoffs against a team with the league's best regular-season record.

  • fan night at Blue Jackets

by gmaskip on 4/13/15Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Have been to the Columbus Blue Jackets game a few times, as we are from a different state. Each time we have had a great time. all seats are good, parking prices are very reasonable. They treat their fans great. Last game of the season, they gave out many items to their fans. Love the cannon they shoot off when they score. Also love the huge fan played hockey game out in the walk way.

  • Awesome game

by ClausSwe on 4/7/15Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Blue Jackets really pulled a great game when they manage to go from 0-2 to 5-3! Felt like most of the playtime were spent on Pittsburgs side, and Blue Jackets scored five goals so we where in a great place to see it!

  • Pens Blow It Again !!

by CyberArmyJim on 4/7/15Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

The Pens jump out to a 2-0 lead, only to sit back and watch the Blue Jackets come back and beat them. It reminded me of when the Pens lost to the Blue Jackets in the first round of the playoffs. The Pens pass first and shoot as a last resort strategy will make them exit the playoffs early as usual this year. Well that is IF they make the playoffs at all. And what a monumental collaspe that would be if they did not make the playoffs. This Pens team lacks physical and mental toughness. They have suffered from inconsistent play all year long. They get a lead and then they just lay down. And give up. TOO MUCH PASSING..... we kill our own power plays by too much passing. We usually make one or two extra passes and kill ANY scoring that we might have.

  • 1st time

    by Pensman1 on 4/7/15Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

My very first pro hockey game. Been to several farm club games. I'm a Pens fan. So the outcome wasn't to my liking. Lol. The arena was very clean and spacious. Seating was a little cramped. Loved the cannon. Just didn't want to hear it 5 times. Lol. I will come back

  • Always a good time

  • Blue jackets experience was awesome!

by DJOSU on 3/27/15Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

I had great seats and the atmosphere was great. The staff was very nice when I got up to get food. The people we sat by were very chill. And most importantly the blue jackets won! Great time.!

Great time! Everyone should go at least once! Me and the whole team had a blast!

  • It was hockey as good at it gets

    by VOLfire67 on 3/17/15Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Fast, Fast, Fast from the game starting face off through a tied game into OT and then an edge of the seat (actually the whole house was standing) shoot out. Hard and Fast. with great seats and very good food and beverage options at reasonable stadium pricing. the whole venue is set up for convenience and ample very close parking.

  • Fun fun fun

  • another cbj loss

by cooloo on 3/10/15Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 3 out of 5

Took the family to the game as a Christmas present. Everybody had a good time. Only if the Jackets would have won.

  • Venue great; blue jackets suck!!

    by Stoney02 on 3/10/15Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

Seats were perfect although I had forgotten how cramped the seats were. I'm only 5-10. How does a 6+ foot person manage to sit in these seats!!

  • Cbj airline.

    by Lonestar8042 on 3/3/15Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 2 out of 5

The seats were so tight that we left sore and slightly irritable. I attend Lake Erie Monsters games quite frequently, and I would have to say that they do far more to keep the crowd in the game and entertained. The view from our seats was great, it doesn't seem like there is a bad seat in the house. They seem however not built for someone over 6ft tall, or slightly overweight, one our friends didn't fit in the seat. Driving back to Cleveland after the game was interesting. We were all bummed out at the performance of the Jackets, and frankly we were all bored. I love the Jackets, and will always cheer for them, however I think it will be from my couch.

Had a wonderful evening. Makes a great date night.

  • The atmosphere at the arena is incredible

by Johston on 2/27/15Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

We enjoyed the game very much. The seats were great. We only hoped they would have won.

  • Jackets won! Drink prices wow!

by Ketelwan on 2/18/15Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

Bottom line the Jackets won, but the drink prices are getting ridiculous and the traffic to and from the game is worse. They need more traffic monitors stopping non game essential traffic and letting those of us trying to get in and out flow more smoothly to and from the arena.

  • Comeback was AWESOME !!!

by kokomow on 2/16/15Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Being down by two goals in the third... Tying it up in regulation... Winning in overtime... AWESOME !!!

  • The game was awesome! Blue Jackets win in overtime

by Anonymous on 2/16/15Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

The Tim Hortons special night at Blue Jackets was great! We received a Blue jackets ball cap, travel coffee mug and 10 dollars of free food. Once we got home, in our mugs was a voucher for a free coffee and 10 small donuts at Tim Hortons!

  • by LLone on 2/16/15Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Great time, great seats, great win in overtime and had a great time with my friends
