Columbus Blue Jackets History

The Columbus Blue Jackets—whose name pays tribute to Ohio's substantial contributions to the Union army during the Civil War—joined the NHL as an expansion franchise in 2000.

The Blue Jackets played their first 12 seasons as a member of the Western Conference, making their first foray into the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2008-2009 led by All-Star winger Rick Nash and Rookie of the Year goaltender Steve Mason.

NHL realignment saw the team move to the Eastern Conference in 2013-2014, and the Blue Jackets have since collected six winning seasons and qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs five times. Columbus was one of just three teams to earn playoff berths in four consecutive seasons from 2016-2020, joining the Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals.

In 2018-2019, the eighth-seeded Blue Jackets faced off against the Presidents' Trophy-winning and top-seeded Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round of the playoffs. The Blue Jackets shocked the heavily-favored Lightning as they became the first team in NHL history to earn a four-game sweep in the first round of the playoffs against a team with the league's best regular-season record.

  • First Blue Jackets game = 6 goals and hat trick

by Manandy on 2/28/16Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Attended first Blue Jackets game with my mom Thursday Feb. 25th. Our seats were excellent up in 212. Saw all the ice action. Very exciting game as the Jackets scored 6 goals and Nick Foligno had a hat trick. The cannon was busy that night. Got our picture taken with the cannon too. Awesome! What a game to go to. Hockey is the best sport to see live. If you have not seen an NHL game, I would highly recommend you go and especially go see the Blue Jackets. The overall experience is great and the people are friendly. Just be sure to dress warmly.

Great arena. The family pack was very inexpensive for a family of four- included seats, food, tickets to skate at the outdoor rink, and coupons for ice cream at Coldstone Creamery.

  • Sabres vs Bluejackets

by papaburg on 2/22/16Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first time at an NHL game. The seats were amazing, the whole experience was great. My nephew and I are both Buffalo fans so I was a little unsure about a game in Columbus, but the fans for both sides were great. The feeling was more like a bunch of friends watching a football game on tv together. We will definitely be going again. The arena in Columbus was beyond compare, both inside and outside.

Game was great! The price for nose bleed seats were terrible. Two rows from the top on an end. Maybe $25 a seat. But ended up $41 with fees. If I go back, I'd try my luck with a scalper first. It would be different if the BJ's were a good team, but, they're not.

2 passes set up Brandon Saad, 2 quick skates, mid circles, slap shot....PURE NET SCORE. Empty net score, secures win! Live in Pittsburgh, Life long Pittsburger, SICK OF PITTSBURGH AND ITS SPOILED FANS. LETS GO JACKETS. PENS WILL NOT MAKE 2016 PLAYOFFS!

It was one of the best experiences I've ever had at a sporting event. Great game and even better experience

  • love the team hate the seats

    by Coulditbemagic88 on 2/16/16Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

We came to town to see hockey and we had a great time. We love the arena and there isn't really a bad seat EXCEPT for the fact that the seats are so small and close together. I was seated between my husband, an average size guy, and a man who looked to be a body builder and I sat with my shoulders hunched all night because we didn't have enough space. In fact I had to sit facing sideways toward my husband so the other man could use the armrest and had a place for his drink. I've only sat in the upper bowl so I am not sure if it is any better down closer to the ice but I was extremely uncomfortable and cramped for space. It's February and was only 11degrees outside so we all had coats and were bundled up which made it only worse. Other than that we love everything else about the arena and the Columbus Blue Jackets.

  • Bluejackets game was awesome

by Hunterwiggywigs on 2/16/16Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

My wife was in a cast. They have wheel chairs by the entrances. They gave her a ride to our section and came back at the end of the game to pick her up. Great customer service. Thank you nationwide arena.

If you're a sports fan, you've got to experience a NHL game in person at least once. Fast-paced, action-packed fun.

  • Always a great game

My home team, the Bluejackets played well, but they were playing against the (current) best in the NHL. Better luck next time. Go Jackets!

  • Great game, tight seating.

by Anonymous on 1/7/16Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

When purchasing, I assumed these were aisle seats. They are not. View was good. But situation was poor with a toddler sitting at a dead end. Also these seats do NOT fit the standard male. They are very tight. So do not plan on standing up in a hurry to cheer. It simply wont work.

  • ok

by stevieq on 1/5/16Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 2 out of 5

Game was fun, arena is nice. But the family value pack is deceptive. "free ice cream" is a coupon for buy-one-get-one, ice skating passes not usable for 30+ days. Just buy tickets outright.
