Columbus Blue Jackets History

The Columbus Blue Jackets—whose name pays tribute to Ohio's substantial contributions to the Union army during the Civil War—joined the NHL as an expansion franchise in 2000.

The Blue Jackets played their first 12 seasons as a member of the Western Conference, making their first foray into the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2008-2009 led by All-Star winger Rick Nash and Rookie of the Year goaltender Steve Mason.

NHL realignment saw the team move to the Eastern Conference in 2013-2014, and the Blue Jackets have since collected six winning seasons and qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs five times. Columbus was one of just three teams to earn playoff berths in four consecutive seasons from 2016-2020, joining the Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals.

In 2018-2019, the eighth-seeded Blue Jackets faced off against the Presidents' Trophy-winning and top-seeded Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round of the playoffs. The Blue Jackets shocked the heavily-favored Lightning as they became the first team in NHL history to earn a four-game sweep in the first round of the playoffs against a team with the league's best regular-season record.

  • Islanders game

    by Y2jayIslanders on 11/2/24Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 3 out of 5

The view was great. The seating was very cramped. The concession food was terrible and way over priced. Love the atmosphere there. They love their Bluejackets without being over bearing. This is our 5th game in 3 years. It's now our tradition to go twice a year to Columbus to see our Islanders play.

Very nice event for the season ticket holders and seat license holders. This is truly a good way of showing appreciation for the fan base. Players, staff and everyone very gracious and welcoming.

Disappointed in the loss by the Leafs but arena staff were friendly at the Columbus game.

Everything was great except parking. My email confirmation verified that I had the added parking, but the parking pass didn’t show up with the tickets. Folks were nice in the front street garage, but it was an unnecessary delay. Game tickets worked flawlessly and that part was super easy.

  • This venue is the nicest venue I have ever been in.

Columbus has the nicest venue by far in the 30 years i`ve been going to games. From the staff to the Columbus fans, it is an awesome venue. It was a joy watching a loss.

  • Not much excitement...

by Jim on 4/7/24Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 3 out of 5

The team is average at best. I don't know why the Blue Jackets can't put a playoff caliber team together. As for Nationwide arena it is top notch! Great views from the top of the stadium. The Blue Jackets guest experience was great how they try to keep the fans involved. The towels for fans on the back of seats was an added bonus.

  • Great venue. Knowledgeable staff.

by Colleen on 4/2/24Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Was there to see the Pittsburgh Penguins! The game was exciting. Other than the Pens losing it was an enjoyable evening. The venue is great! 😊

I was concerned about how everything would work out but it turned out to be very efficient. The seats were better than I anticipated.

  • Great time in the Arena District

by Ron- Indianapolis on 1/25/24Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Attended a Bluejackets-Devils game at Nationwide Arena. Great arena, great game, and a great overall experience with a hotel (Drury Inn) within walking distance of the arena and lots of entertainment and food options in the Arena District around the arena. Great venue for a hockey game!
