Columbus Blue Jackets History

The Columbus Blue Jackets—whose name pays tribute to Ohio's substantial contributions to the Union army during the Civil War—joined the NHL as an expansion franchise in 2000.

The Blue Jackets played their first 12 seasons as a member of the Western Conference, making their first foray into the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2008-2009 led by All-Star winger Rick Nash and Rookie of the Year goaltender Steve Mason.

NHL realignment saw the team move to the Eastern Conference in 2013-2014, and the Blue Jackets have since collected six winning seasons and qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs five times. Columbus was one of just three teams to earn playoff berths in four consecutive seasons from 2016-2020, joining the Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals.

In 2018-2019, the eighth-seeded Blue Jackets faced off against the Presidents' Trophy-winning and top-seeded Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round of the playoffs. The Blue Jackets shocked the heavily-favored Lightning as they became the first team in NHL history to earn a four-game sweep in the first round of the playoffs against a team with the league's best regular-season record.

  • Great venue and great atmosphere

    by Sassy1 on 10/5/16Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

I have been to this arena many times over the years and can say it had always been a great family atmosphere. The only suggestion I would give is sit on the curves/ends as the center sections are way too close together and can be uncomfortable.

  • Pittsburgh Hockey Game

    by dc129 on 10/5/16Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Ist time I have been to a Hockey Game and everybody there behaved I didn't have beer spilled all over me and popcorn and all kinds of other crap dumped on me I am a Pittsburgh fan and Blue Jackets Fan are not very sportsman like when you wear the other teams jersey so finally a game that was very enjoyable

  • Nationwide arena one of the best!!

by Daveman on 4/13/16Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

For last game of the season (meaningless for Columbus) it was very well played and pretty intense. You could tell that Columbus really wanted to beat the champs (Blackhawks) on fan appreciation night. Arena is awesome hockey venue. Lots of refreshment stations and plenty of restrooms. I like the cannon firing after Columbus goals. Only downside was the profanity directed at my 14 year old daughter and her friend (they were wearing Blackhawk gear) during the game. You would think that young girls wouldn't be a target of abuse but I wasn't real surprised. It is a nice arena but I wouldn't attend to root for the opposing team as we also encountered some belligerence outside on the way back to the hotel.

Great venue in a downtown that is full of restaurants and pubs with-in walking distance.

  • Hawks fan in Columbus

    by emand09 on 4/13/16Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

The venue was fantastic. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The beer was cold and the game was exciting. Downside was the food choices in the area. We got there 4 hours before the game and every place around there had a 3 hour wait and the Chipolte wouldn't open until 1 hour before puck drop, the lost a lot of business because of that I'm sure. Had to get starbucks sandwiches until we could get into the game to get food.

  • Great Game

Went with my son and we had a great time. Great place to watch game, arena is amazing, staff is excellent.

  • Decent NHL Experience

    by TNT409 on 4/13/16Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 3 out of 5

Compared to other NHL venues, Columbus is pretty average. Here are some of the positives: 1) The location is great. It's in a neighborhood with lots of parking and a lot of places to eat. That makes for a great pre-game atmosphere. 2) The Blue Jackets have a cannon they fire off after scoring goals. That's a nice touch that makes for a unique goal celebration. 3) The arena has a state of the art big screen and other amenities you'd expect from a modern arena. 4) The seats had great sightlines for the action. Here are the negatives: 1) The arena is asymmetric. The upper level on one side is completely different from the other. This is not only aesthetically repulsive, but it's inefficient as well. The classic bowl design is much nicer. 2) In spite of being a newer arena, there were still a shortage of restrooms, which leads to long lines in the intermissions. Seriously? 3) The Blue Jackets do a ton of gimmicks and promotions during media timeouts. It's very annoying. They present themselves more like a minor league baseball team than a professional hockey team. Perhaps the overall minor-league atmosphere is fitting though given the minor league talent the Blue Jackets put on the ice. Overall, the game was a good time and I would highly recommend NHL hockey to anyone. Nationwide Arena is an ok place to do that.

  • Chicago Blackhawks @ Columbus Blue Jackets

by OLDTL on 4/12/16Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Only got to see 3 games at Nation Wide Arena this year, ( Live in Pgh. but love our JACKETS... 6 game plan coming next season ). We Jacket fans looked like we were not only out numbered by 3 goals after 1st period against the defending Stanly Cup Champions, but also by a 3 to 1 Chicago fan base as well. I my self was in disparage after the 1st. very much in doubt. What a slow and silent come back in the 2nd to tie the score, and have a lead in the 3rd, only to end regulation in a tie after killing a 2 man disadvantage in the last 3 min. of regulation due to questionable calls. Great win in extra 5 min. period, to cap an amazing come back. Game had mile posts achieved. 2nd half of season Jackets proved they can not only play against, but can beat any team in the league on any night. t for the Jackets next season, IT'S A VERY PROMISING LOOKING SEASON FOR 2016 /2017. Thank you Jackets....I enjoyed watching the potential, and growth going into next season.

  • Great view from these seats!

    by osubucks1 on 4/12/16Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Nationwide Arena is a great venue. Huge variety of food. Very accomodating to handicapped folks. They took my 90 yr old Mom in a wheelchair to her seating area AND they were waiting for her after the game! We are Blackhawks fans and it almost felt like a home game! They lost but it was a great time!

  • Blue Jackets vs Blackhawks

by Anonymous on 4/12/16Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

I am a Chicago Blackhawk fan. I have been going on road trip games for a few years now. The Nationwide Arena was awesome. Everything was so clean and fresh. The amazing beer sectional was a major plus. If you can't find your favorite beer it's probably some craft hometown local beer. They have a ton of great food too. The best part about it all were the fans. Being an out of towner can sometime be a little rough, but Blue Jacket fans were great. A little back and forth talking, but everything in a kind spirit. I will definitely be back for another game.

  • Great time in Columbus...

    by mo4040 on 4/12/16Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

This is my third trip Nationwide to see the Blackhawks and Bluejackets. Again, I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the arena and in Columbus.

Great time in Columbus! The area around the arena provides a lot of options for food and beverages.

  • CS-GO Final and New York Rangers v. Blue Jackets

    by Rangerfan13 on 4/7/16Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

As a birthday gift, I took my son to the CS-GO Final and stayed the next day for the Rangers V. Blue Jackets game. The arena was amazing for both events. The staff was incredible and very friendly. We made several new friends. Would return for a visit in a minute! I couldn't believe all of the giveaways during the game. A lot of fun! Columbus is a great city.

  • Great time!

    by Qualkd1 on 3/28/16Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 3 out of 5

Given the end of the season it was still nice to get out and watch some hockey. I wish the fans were as into as Philadelphia fans love their Flyers, but I guess that will come once the Jackets get their business together. I've been to a few games and feel comfortable knowing everything is well taken care of. Bathrooms are always clean, walk ways always clean and the ushers are always friendly and helpful. My only compliant would be the prices of beverages and food. I don't know if its to detour people from drinking, but I do not ever see a point in buying a beer in the arena.

  • View was awesome !!!

by Neelam on 3/27/16Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Everything was awesome I would love to get those seats again and again :)

  • Family Pass Tickets

    by jarocky1 on 3/22/16Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

I took my family of 5 to the game and we bought the Family Pass tickets. They included food at the arena, seats, cold stone creamery outside of the arena and ice skating pass. This was my 4 year olds first hockey game ever and he was looking forward to ice skating. We go into the Ice Haus to ice skate and they have open hockey games no open skating. The pass is good up to June but we are from Indiana and just can't pack up to just go ice skating. We've bought these tickets before and we were able to Ice Skate right before the game. As a parent it was heart breaking to have to tell my 4 year old that he won't be able to skate. He loved the game part but that was the only thing that saved the night. I would recommend them only having that ticket pass for when they know there's going to be open skating because not all of us are from around the area.

My cousin and I had an awesome time! Go Red Wings!!!

  • Great experience creates new hockey fans

    by librarymouse81 on 3/18/16Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Several members of my family had been wanting to see a hockey game for a while but were unsure about it, so we dragged along one of my friends who is a huge Red Wings fan. We picked our seats without knowing too much about it, and they ended up being the perfect seats. The view was phenomenal and the distance was just right for some fantastic photos. The food prices were reasonable, and we even bought some shirts as souvenirs. We had a wonderful time and are looking forward to attending another game in future.

  • Finally Handicap Accessible Parking !!!!!

by CyberArmyJim on 3/15/16Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

After going to 2 events with NO handicap parking, I was ready to NEVER come back to Nationwide Arena EVER AGAIN. I have had the tickets since last Sept. and we decided to go. We had parked on ground level at the McConnell parking garage many times before, but at a Jackets game in Nov and at Joel Osteen in Feb we were not allowed to park on the ground level, even though we had a handicap permit and there were over 20 available parking spaces. After those events I complained to the Arena. They told me they had nothing to do with the parking garages, but they would look into it. I would like to thank Nationwide Arena for correcting this problem. I look forward to attending events there in the future without having to worry about available handicap accessible parking. I feel like Nationwide was on our side !!!! Thank you again, Jim
