Columbus Blue Jackets History

The Columbus Blue Jackets—whose name pays tribute to Ohio's substantial contributions to the Union army during the Civil War—joined the NHL as an expansion franchise in 2000.

The Blue Jackets played their first 12 seasons as a member of the Western Conference, making their first foray into the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2008-2009 led by All-Star winger Rick Nash and Rookie of the Year goaltender Steve Mason.

NHL realignment saw the team move to the Eastern Conference in 2013-2014, and the Blue Jackets have since collected six winning seasons and qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs five times. Columbus was one of just three teams to earn playoff berths in four consecutive seasons from 2016-2020, joining the Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals.

In 2018-2019, the eighth-seeded Blue Jackets faced off against the Presidents' Trophy-winning and top-seeded Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round of the playoffs. The Blue Jackets shocked the heavily-favored Lightning as they became the first team in NHL history to earn a four-game sweep in the first round of the playoffs against a team with the league's best regular-season record.

  • First CBJ Game - It Was Great!

by NewCBJFan on 2/20/17Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

This was our first game. It was a lot of fun. Parking was very easy and even though the arena was sold out we didn't have to wait long in lines. Plus the game was great and we won! We can't wait to go back!

  • CBJ night off

by seldomseenreally on 2/7/17Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 1 out of 5

They stunk. Seen'em lose 7 games this season, of all seasons. Want my money back.

  • The BEST fans!

    by susrr1 on 2/7/17Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

We always enjoy CBJ home games. The facility is nice and convenient to hotels and surrounding entertainment. The staff is incredibly friendly. The fans are some of the most fun. When we go to away games, other teams' home crowds don't seem to get into the excitement as much. There's always a cheer or something going on to keep the crowd going at Nationwide.

  • CBJ still #1 in my book!

    by LinzCarleton15 on 1/22/17Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Although the Jackets lost the game my husband & I went to for his 28th Birthday we had a great time! Our seats were amazing, the atmosphere is incredible, & the giveaways were great!

  • Stanley Cup bound

    by Denali1919 on 1/20/17Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

The Arena District in Columbus is an awesome place and way to spend a night out. It's clean, new, and has a lot of options whether it be an ecclectic variety of top rated restaurants or local breweries that use locally sourced high quality ingredients. The Jackets almost broke the most consecutive win streak in the NHL but we are more poised to bring the Cup home to Ohio for the first time and definitely not the last.

  • A Blast!

by Starshipper on 1/20/17Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

My husband and I had a great time at the blue jackets game! They played so well. Great action and lots of scoring! We had awesome seats in section 217 I can't wait to go again!

  • Great arena and atmosphere for hockey

by Anonymous on 1/13/17Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

Nationwide arena is an amazing venue for hockey. Great sight lines and game atmosphere. Very impressive for a city without a long hockey history. Concessions are a bit high, but not as bad as some larger cities
