Columbus Blue Jackets History

The Columbus Blue Jackets—whose name pays tribute to Ohio's substantial contributions to the Union army during the Civil War—joined the NHL as an expansion franchise in 2000.

The Blue Jackets played their first 12 seasons as a member of the Western Conference, making their first foray into the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2008-2009 led by All-Star winger Rick Nash and Rookie of the Year goaltender Steve Mason.

NHL realignment saw the team move to the Eastern Conference in 2013-2014, and the Blue Jackets have since collected six winning seasons and qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs five times. Columbus was one of just three teams to earn playoff berths in four consecutive seasons from 2016-2020, joining the Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals.

In 2018-2019, the eighth-seeded Blue Jackets faced off against the Presidents' Trophy-winning and top-seeded Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round of the playoffs. The Blue Jackets shocked the heavily-favored Lightning as they became the first team in NHL history to earn a four-game sweep in the first round of the playoffs against a team with the league's best regular-season record.

  • 3 peat possible

by Anonymous on 2/21/18Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

The pens started strong after struggling most of this year. This strong passing and goal scoring took the Columbus crowd out of the game from the start. Columbus seems to have adopted a dump and shoot style of game, which is not the way they were playing earlier this year. Bob seems to get rattled once he sees the gold and black jerseys. He let in a couple of very soft goals. The Pens seem to be playing like they they really want a 3 peat!!!

  • Fun times in arena district

by Rozbonk on 2/21/18Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

We travel to Columbus every couple years or so to watch the Pens and Jackets rivalry. The atmosphere is always exciting. We really enjoyed the game and beforehand we skated on the outdoor rink at Winter Park which was a great experience. The people of Columbus are always friendly and welcoming and we look forward to our next visit. Well done Columbus, OH!

  • First Hockey Game

    by Bluemax229 on 2/21/18Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

I had never been to a Columbus blue jackets hockey game. Every part of it was fantastic! From the ease which with we were able to park, short walk to the arena, and especially the friendliness of all the staff. The seating is such that there doesn't appear to be a bad seat in the house. We were up high, but could clearly see all the action. I could see you right over the head of the person in front of me. The one thing that surprised me were the concentration of Pittsburg Penguins fans. For a moment I thought I was in Pittsburgh! My next home hockey game at Nationwide will be with and an opponent that will not present a high number of fans in the stands. One more thing… If you don't like standing up to let people from your row pass by, then pick seats in the middle of the row. there was one female Penguins fan in my road that must have gone to get beer/bathroom eight times! Leaving the arena was just as trouble free as arriving. The mass crowd moved briskly, and even getting out of the parking garage and back on the interstate took just minutes. A really great experience which I look forward to repeating!

  • Great place to see a game

by STLHockeyDad on 2/20/18Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

My son and I recently began our quest to see a game in every NHL arena. We were in Columbus for a Squirt hockey tournament, so we got tickets. Nationwide did not disappoint- Nice, clean venue, great way finding, friendly staff, easy in, easy out... everything a visitor could ask for. Food and beer options abound and are more reasonably priced than most other arenas we've visited. A couple of things to note: parking is not great. This is true of many arenas, so not a huge gripe, but be prepared. Doors opened only an hour before opening face off, but it's a nice area and you can kill time if you need to. Another minor ding is that while there are many small kiosks in the concourse of the arena, the team store is actually in an adjacent building. Go there before the game if you're looking for swag. Tickets- they really push the electronic ticket. It's convenient for some, but if you collect hard tickets, allow yourself a few extra days for shipping and be prepared to pay a premium.

  • Very fun

by Samsaysiam on 2/19/18Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Seeing the Blue Jackets is always fun, especially if you’re a Columbus native. The game is fun whether win or lose, which in this case they lost 1-2. Definitely planning on going again.

  • How can you not like hockey...

by Iceski on 2/19/18Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

The game was amazing and the staff goes out of their way to be helpful. I did take a Star always because the seats are insanely uncomfortable. I’m not small but I’m not huge and I couldn’t sit in the seats normally. It was a packed house and I felt like a sardine. I felt like I was sitting in the cheap seats even though I was just a few rows from the ice. To me not worth the price for season tickets. But a single game it’s still worth it from time to time.

Great game! Had amazing seats! Recieved a signed game stick after the game to top it off!

  • Blue Jackets New Year's Eve home game

by eightydeuce on 1/3/18Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 1 out of 5

An absolute pathetic performance. No hustle, listless, what a waste of time and money. I won't be back. Concessions?-limited choices, fair service, poor food and attention to condiment stands.

  • NHL Hockey

by liagmaster on 12/23/17Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

The game itself was very entertaining as both teams played hard! Lot's of "support" as between the periods and whenever play was postponed (ie to get the ice cleaned up), there was ALWAYS something going on. Had a lot of fun!

  • by Anonymous on 12/23/17Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

Excellent food, courteous staff, and easy entry. Presenter between periods was mediocre.

  • Another great night at NWA.

by cbusorbust on 12/4/17Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Love coming to Nationwide for Blue Jackets games! Venue is great (clean, lots to do, comfy seats - even in the nosebleeds) and staff are the best - they are personable and really take care of their guests.

  • Beautiful arena, great area, fun atmosphere

    by 111231323158 on 11/27/17Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Can't go wrong with Nationwide Arena. Blue Jackets are playing great now and the in arena fan experience is fantastic.

  • a little higher in the lower bowl

    by Morrm0 on 11/27/17Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

We had tickets for the CBJ-Senators game and got seats a bit higher in the lower bowl in section 117. These made for better viewer of the 'other end' of the ice when play was centered there. We will do this area again when we can get them. The stadium is a great venue, no not amazing since I am selective in the use of that word. Ladies rooms are always well stocked and that is worth a mention!

  • CBJ games are always a blast

    by Tdogg28 on 11/25/17Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Love going to the hockey games at nationwide just make sure you print your tickets off or you’ll have to wait in a longer line. But had a blast can’t wait to go again!!!

  • Blue Jackets

    by PhilW58 on 11/20/17Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

Enjoyed the game and atmosphere immensely. Sat in 204. Plenty of vendors and bathroom close. The size of the seats are very narrow which was uncomfortable throughout.

Great facility and environment. Unfortunately my team lost.
