Columbus Blue Jackets History

The Columbus Blue Jackets—whose name pays tribute to Ohio's substantial contributions to the Union army during the Civil War—joined the NHL as an expansion franchise in 2000.

The Blue Jackets played their first 12 seasons as a member of the Western Conference, making their first foray into the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2008-2009 led by All-Star winger Rick Nash and Rookie of the Year goaltender Steve Mason.

NHL realignment saw the team move to the Eastern Conference in 2013-2014, and the Blue Jackets have since collected six winning seasons and qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs five times. Columbus was one of just three teams to earn playoff berths in four consecutive seasons from 2016-2020, joining the Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals.

In 2018-2019, the eighth-seeded Blue Jackets faced off against the Presidents' Trophy-winning and top-seeded Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round of the playoffs. The Blue Jackets shocked the heavily-favored Lightning as they became the first team in NHL history to earn a four-game sweep in the first round of the playoffs against a team with the league's best regular-season record.

It was a great venue! The people were friendly, the staff was helpful, and I was only threatened for wearing a Golden Knights Jersey once. Will probably go again!

  • CBJ v Red Wings

by Koolmimbella on 3/12/18Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

the game was great except for the obnoxious CBJ fan sitting 2 rows behind us.

  • Good game. Lousy seats.

    by Bruce5562 on 3/12/18Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

The row of seats we had were a roll away row so they bounced every time someone came down the aisle and people kept falling into us when they shorted the step.

  • Action!

Couldn't beat the fast playing action and the good seats!

  • Blu Jackets rock!

by Anonymous on 3/1/18Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

  • Great place to watch hockey!

by Burtedious on 2/28/18Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Nationwide Arena has excellent sightlines for hockey, and is located in the heart of Columbus' Arena District. It is surrounded by bars and restaurants that you can visit before going to the game. The atmosphere inside is helped by what team the Blue Jackets are playing. I would suggest going when they play Detroit, Pittsburgh or Chicago. Those teams bring a large number of their fans with them... which adds a lot to the electricity of the crowd!

This was the first time I had been to Nationwide Arena, and I have to say, it was a really nice venue! Everyone was friendly, the arena was beautiful, and our seats were amazing! I would definitely travel back.

  • Blackhawks Vs. Bluejackets

by buffpilot on 2/27/18Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Very impressed with Nationwide Arena. We had seats in Row X, 24 rows from the glass in the left hand corner, across from the cannon.. Good sight lines. We were Blackhawk fans and the Bluejacket fans were very nice. Lots of Hawk fans at the game. But when the Bluejackets scored a GOAL, bedlam occurred, the cannon going off scared the heck out of my wife. Easy to leave the arena and get a cab back to our hotel.

    by cody51511 on 2/22/18Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Even though the Blue Jackets lost the arena is a great place to go see hockey. Traffic is bad after but what place isn't.

  • Fantastic Atmosphere and Experience

by HamOnTheCob on 2/21/18Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Nationwide Arena is a stellar venue for an event, especially hockey! Parking is pricey but convenient, the staff at the arena are extremely helpful and very friendly. The food options are plentiful and many are unique (like a ridiculous slab of bacon on a stick!). The entertainment between the action is fun and engaging, and the fans are all super energetic and friendly! I would recommend a Blue Jackets game at Nationwide Arena to anyone.
