Columbus Blue Jackets History

The Columbus Blue Jackets—whose name pays tribute to Ohio's substantial contributions to the Union army during the Civil War—joined the NHL as an expansion franchise in 2000.

The Blue Jackets played their first 12 seasons as a member of the Western Conference, making their first foray into the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2008-2009 led by All-Star winger Rick Nash and Rookie of the Year goaltender Steve Mason.

NHL realignment saw the team move to the Eastern Conference in 2013-2014, and the Blue Jackets have since collected six winning seasons and qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs five times. Columbus was one of just three teams to earn playoff berths in four consecutive seasons from 2016-2020, joining the Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals.

In 2018-2019, the eighth-seeded Blue Jackets faced off against the Presidents' Trophy-winning and top-seeded Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round of the playoffs. The Blue Jackets shocked the heavily-favored Lightning as they became the first team in NHL history to earn a four-game sweep in the first round of the playoffs against a team with the league's best regular-season record.

  • So much fun!

by luvhorses on 1/21/19Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

My first hockey game! The energy of the crowd was amazing! Kudos to the DJ - music was rocking & timing was crucial. Tickets were a bit expensive ($132) but the 4th row from rink was a great place to be! Our home team did not win :( but when they scored, the crowd Roared! Goalie did a great job, as did the rest of the Team. Will definitely attend another game.

  • Awesome New Year's Eve celebration

by kbills on 1/4/19Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

I took my son to see the Blue Jackets play on New Year's Eve, and our seats were excellent! Even tho we had seats in the last row of Section 206, we had a great view of the arena. The indoor fireworks were awesome too! What a bonus!

  • December 31

by Woody on 1/3/19Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

I had a great time down at the CBJ game on December 31st. Getting to and from the game was easy. Getting my ticket was a snap and getting to my seat was a cinch. The food was tasty as it always is. I even got to see some great views of the action. Watching the CBJ girls come out and skate is a definite plus.

  • Whole lotta Leafs

by Grateful Dad on 12/31/18Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

It was a great night at Nationwide except for two things: the Jackets lost and the Leafs fans owned the lower bowl. Credit TOR for traveling well, but there's no excuse for Jackets fans to let "Go Leafs Go" trump "Let's Go Jackets." C'mon, Columbus, you can't cede your home ice like that.

  • Nice people and venue

    by J. V. on 12/31/18Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

Great experience except beer prices are too high at $10 USD and up.

  • Always fun at CBJ

by Refugee on 12/20/18Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Not having hockey in Cincinnati is a bummer. CBJ save the day, so we visit at least once a year. Nice downtown, welcoming arena, faithful fans and a great goal song. What's not to like!

  • Blue Jackets Worth Price

    by J. H. on 12/20/18Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Bought more expensive seats than usual for Blue Jackets game recently. Totally worth it. Great sightlines, friendly atmosphere and solid arena staff made it worthwhile. Very narrow seats though.....

  • Had Awesome Time

    by luvmyjackets2 on 10/12/18Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

From start to finish my husband and I had a great time at the game. The ushers and cashiers were pleasant and fun. We had 5th row seats that were Awesome, felt like we were right in the game. Won a t-shirt that was thrown out. Would definitely recommend people should go for a date night or family night! won't be disappointed.

  • Jackets Home Opener

by AjForquer on 10/8/18Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

If you’ve been to a Blue Jackets game, you know how fun they are, but opening night is a whole new level. There is a buzz around the building that’s only replicated when it’s playoff time. There is a huge party in front of the arena and several on location broadcasts from locals tv and radio. 10 out of 10 recommend opening night

  • Great first hockey game for me

by Zwayer on 4/26/18Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

  • Cbj

by Jktsfan on 4/22/18Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

This just happened to be one of the worst games they played all year...w/o Bob it would have been horrible! That being sais...what a series! We 've been to many games and Sat it many different areas and you can see the action from anywhere..great venue...easy in and out usually. Nothing like the excitement of a good hockey game! Go CBJ!

  • CBJ playoffs

    by Global3 on 4/22/18Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Nothing better than a CBJ home playoff game! Exciting, loud and filled with tension

  • Standing Room Only

by Khemsurov on 4/20/18Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 1 out of 5

Nationwide is usually fantastic for Blue Jackets games, but in this case they shouldn’t be selling standing room only for section 117. You can’t see the ice. I’d be fine with the tickets if they were cheaper, but $100 for SRO is too steep.

  • by Camilia425 on 4/20/18Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Always a great experience at Nationwide Arena. The location is perfect and the atmosphere of the place is next level. If you've never been to a game you should definitely check one out. You won't regret it.
