    Civil War

by BIGDOGFred on 7/13/09Ford's Theatre - Washington

The performers were multi- talented and delivered powerful musical performances.. Althiough there was no real script, in the traditional sense, the cast offered emotional and beautiful enditions of songs that told the story of how the civil war impacted on the people on both sides of the conflict. I must add, that Ford's Theater, with it's history and context, really elevated the show to another level...I could'nt imaging seeing it in any other venue.

    Loved the Music

by waterfordRUN on 7/13/09Ford's Theatre - Washington

Civil War was a powerful yet, enjoyable pictorial presentation of the period accented by live musical performances from the cast. The music was wonderful and a joy to listen, but the real highlight was the singing. It brought the story to life.

    AMAZING!

by suzanni on 7/13/09Ford's Theatre - Washington

A magnificent depiction of the times and the devastating impact it had on people-- made history very real. The singing was phenomenal -- Broadway quality, if not better!

    Civil War was brilliantly directed

by Bermuda on 7/13/09Ford's Theatre - Washington

Jeff Calhoun is to be commended on his interpretation of the musical production, "Civil War". I have always loved the score but had never seen the stage production until we visited Washington D.C. and attended a performance in the Ford's Theatre. Jeff's blend of contemporary and historical styles keeps the story alive and accessible. There were also some fabulous voices in the cast!

The production gave a very poignant view of both the North and South. The actors were fabulous and portrayed their characters with vigor, zest and amazing energy. What wonderful talent!

    Civil War was very informative.

by Fenton on 7/13/09Ford's Theatre - Washington

This play gave a human perspective of the personal conflicts of the Civil War and the struggles of Lincoln to balance those conflicts. Also, the conflicts of families torn with allegiance to the north and south and whether or not they should even be in the war. In other words, does the end justify the means!

    Civil War was terrible!

    by MAB1 on 7/13/09Ford's Theatre - Washington

Civil War was not about the Civil War. The costumes, music, videos, pictures were about civil rights--not the civil war.

    Civil War was disappointing

by callaway on 7/12/09Ford's Theatre - Washington

Do not waste your money on this production. Maybe it was the lack of real period costumes or the fact this was such a low budget production that just disappointed me from start to finish.

Civil War at Ford's Theater - Capturing Music

by DadOfHistoryBuff on 7/12/09Ford's Theatre - Washington

The Civil War musical was not at all as one might initally think...the Civil War told the stories of separate lives and separate viewpoints through song. It was a magical night. Ford's Theater provides such an initimate setting, and the theater itself is so wrapped in the Civil War (the very theater where Lincoln was shot), it more than added to an already spectacular performance.

Great show for the whole family

by AJGTT on 7/12/09Ford's Theatre - Washington

This musical was the highlight of our trip to Washington. The songs were catchy and memorable, and the story was sensitive to the emotions of the North and South soldiers. It emphasized the commonalities of human beings fighting on different sides of a war while being warm and entertaining the whole way through.

    A Moving Experience...

by Donea on 7/12/09Ford's Theatre - Washington

The Civil War is a moving, emotional experience that uses the words of actual letters written during the war to express the characters' feelings. I had seen this production twice-once in Gettysburg, PA and again at Ford's Theatre. And, family members of mine had performed in a local production. It allows the actors to showcase their incredible voices, but makes little use of available costuming. It's a great history lesson and well worth the ticket price!

    Civil War an Amazing Production!

by Cherylstar on 7/12/09Ford's Theatre - Washington

For starters, this musical had an amazing cast, but one would expect that. What put the show over the top, was the production concept and the minimalist design. Truly breathtaking and amazing! If you have the chance to see this production -- DO! I am not sure if the traveling show will retain the modern concept, but if it is the same as what was seen at Ford's Theatre in DC during the summer of 2009 DO NOT MISS IT!!!

    The Civil War Was Dynamic

by Salmon on 7/12/09Ford's Theatre - Washington

This play was one of my favorites, among all I've seen at Ford's Theatre. It made history come alive, and the audience was compelled to be a part of the struggle. The journey of our brave soldiers, their families at home, saddened and lonely, the compassion of those who cared for the injured, regardless of the color of their skin, and then -- there there was the music -- it was haunting, as well as bursting out with clarity as, it also, told part of the story. The entire event was so wonderful. The beginning, simple and yet it identified the story -- the north and the south, were at odds. And then end, with those incredible voices -- it was chilling. I've played the tape 100 times and will play it 100 more. Thanks for the incredible acting, music and staging. It will be long remembered.

    The Civil War was wonderful.

by Patpat on 7/12/09Ford's Theatre - Washington

The reviews I found about "The Civil War" were mixed. My group and I did not know what to expect. We found the show to be exciting, emotional, and most enjoyable. We loved different numbers. I will always remember "I never knew his name" and the letter to "My Father". It was an excellent history of the war on a personal level. Great show!

    Civil War - Huh?

by GAdamsen on 7/12/09Ford's Theatre - Washington

Okay. I saw the show in NYC. I knew this was a concert version. However, it seemed to me that the creators of this version decided to throw all the song titles into a hat and the order in which they were picked out of that hat is the order in which they were performed! The "concept" of this concert was lost on almost all of us in the audience. The costuming made the women look like trash and the men look constrained and put upon. There were actors playing both Northern and Southern soldiers with no way to tell when they were from the North or the South. There was video and slides - this multimedia part of the production really distracted from the core of the show....it took you completely out of the time period. I have seen and been part of period pieces that use multimedia, but it should NEVER distract. It should always just be icing to the peice and this was a hot mess. This was an ill conceived idea. There was no real concept. It was boring. And there was a lack of songs that I remembered from the original show. If you liked the albums of CIVIL WAR, this version will disappoint you immensely! After the concert ended, I turned to my friend who joined me and the first thing I said to her was, "Huh?" That sums it up I guess. A very very disappointing production.
