Cirque du Soleil: OVO on Tour

Talk about creating a buzz. Touring circus company Cirque du Soleil's OVO offers a nonstop, life-affirming, two-hour tribute to the infinitely diverse world of insects. This sensual, acrobatically dazzling show premiered in 2009 as the Montreal-based circus company's 25th production since 1984. The cast for its premiere included 54 performing artists from 16 different countries. Created and directed by Deborah Colker, OVO (Portuguese for "egg") contemplates insects in all their beauty, action and curiosity. Brazilian composer Berna Ceppas transforms their flight, leaps, creeping and crawling into a samba-influenced choreographic spectacle augmented by the constant flutter and hum of real insect sounds.

With well over a thousand performances to date, OVO long ago took flight as one of the Cirque's most popular and rewarding extravaganzas. As Albany, New York's Times Union said of OVO in 2020, "In our digital age, it's reassuring to remember that non-simulated, filter-free entertainment still has the power to dazzle and transport us."

What is Cirque du Soleil: OVO?

Upon its Montreal debut in 2009, OVO became Cirque du Soleil's most audacious and virtuosic new-circus show to date. A trio of principal characters — Master Flipo, Foreigner and Ladybug — keeps this arena spectacular in constant motion, as awestruck insects become intensely interested in a mysterious egg's sudden appearance. OVO teems with life, and Cirque du Soleil's talented cast mirrors the insect world's natural abilities to fly, balance and leap with a lifetime of practice and precision.

During one of the company's largest flying acts, 10 scarab beetles on three platforms toss a single beetle back and forth. A colorfully costumed dragonfly flits about, red ants juggle chunks of kiwi and corncobs with their feet, and butterflies cling gracefully to one another as they float through the air. For OVO's grand finale, the large span used for brilliant lighting effects transforms into a two-story climbing wall onto which trampoline-powered crickets are hurled as though onto a vertical stage. Cockroaches, grasshoppers and other insects serve as supporting characters throughout the evening's dozen acrobatic tours de force.

    So Wonderfully Unexpected!

by Becky on 9/12/22Ball Arena - Denver

Inspects, spiders, oh my! Didn't know what to expect, but from previous shows I've attended of Cirque du Soleil's, I had to attend! So glad I did! It was a wonderful, delightful, stimuli for all the senses!

    Perfect for kids

by Martay on 9/12/22Ball Arena - Denver

The athletes are absolutely incredible, but the three characters that they use to distract from set changes had way too much stage time. Their portion was hard to watch as an adult, but it would be perfect for kids.

    Great Cirque Fun

by Linda S on 9/12/22Ball Arena - Denver

The show was really good. It had all of the Cirque elements except it could have had better live music and a more cohesive story line. The acrobatics were amazing and everyone in my group enjoyed it.

    Great show

by Nick on 9/12/22Ball Arena - Denver

Good costumes, enticing music and acts that flow naturally and seamlessly. As always CdS makes challenging acts seem so easy. The whole experience is magestic and dreamy.

    Brilliant!!!

by Amanda on 9/11/22Ball Arena - Denver

Getting my ticket was so simple and getting in the venue was super simple. Helpful staff to get you to the right doors and it was Cirque! The costuming, the music, the athleticism, the beautiful sets! Eye candy from start to finish! The opportunity to buy parking at the same time as purchasing the ticket was VERY helpful and kept the evening stress free! Couldn’t be happier that I got to experience this beautiful show!

    Same old

by Tallcool on 9/11/22Ball Arena - Denver

While still amazing athetic feats ovo seemed unimaginative at many points. Better suited for a matinee. I missed the music which sounded prerecorded most of the time. The highlights were when we actually saw the violinist and tambourine artist. Main theme was tedious and repetitive. No new acts

    fabulous

by Mary on 9/11/22Ball Arena - Denver

The performance was amazing. We have wanted to attend a Cirque for years but never got around to getting tickets. The show was fun, entertaining, mesmerizing and stunning. It just got better as the show progressed!

    Great but not exceptional

by CMB dragon on 9/11/22Ball Arena - Denver

I still love Cirque Du Soleil shows in the big top. I've seen at least 14 different shows since the 90's, both in Denver and Las Vegas. Some were so memorable I can still see them in my mind 20-30 years later. OVO was cute and the two main clowns were sweet. There were only three acts that had newness to them and all three were either thrilling or enchanting. As to the insect theme, I wanted to see more aerial butterflies, more acrobatics with insect costumes that challenged their skills to perform. Would I recommend it? Sure, if you've only seen two, one or no shows. It was good, not great.

    So much fun!

    by R. K. on 9/11/22

I got to see the show twice while it was in Denver. I have to say both performances we're absolutely thrilling. Watching from different spots made the show almost completely different! My sisters liked it so much they want it do a trip to Vegas to see more! Thanks for a BEAUTIFUL show!

    Never again!

by Jewels on 9/11/22Ball Arena - Denver

I usually love these shows and have seen nearly all of them! Ovo was just a tired reprise of many other shows with much more theatrics than acrobatics! Throw in the horrible Ball arena venue in Denver where the seats are smaller than United Airlines’s basic economy seats and I wish I would have saved my money and stayed home.

    Nothing new

by FM on 9/11/22Ball Arena - Denver

Story line was kind of boring to this show. This show was one that didn’t have a lot of new art and acts. Everything looked very cheap. I went to t he first show in Denver on 8th and the actors were not in sync. A lot of things that that were obvious mess ups. Only cirque show I wasn’t a fan of.

    So so performances

by Missy on 8/12/22Canada Life Centre - Winnipeg

Attended Sunday matinee and was disappointed in the show. I found the vignettes were repetitious and rather boring. I thought there could have been more acrobatic/balancing and/or trapeze performances. The trapeze performers that did perform were brilliant. OVO is a show I would pass on and not recommend to others.

Colours, acrobatics, humour, choreography, theme, costumes, variety, music all out of this world, deeply of this world, mystifying & entrancing.

    Less excitement than anticipated

by TheatreLover on 8/10/22Canada Life Centre - Winnipeg

The show went from a drama scene to an action scene and this repeated throughout. I found the drama scenes mildly entertaining, mildly meaning about a 2/10. Then the action sequences were really good. I do not like contortionists and there were two of those. But the other action scenes such as Ariel ballet were spectacular as expected.
