Cirque du Soleil: OVO on Tour
Talk about creating a buzz. Touring circus company Cirque du Soleil's OVO offers a nonstop, life-affirming, two-hour tribute to the infinitely diverse world of insects. This sensual, acrobatically dazzling show premiered in 2009 as the Montreal-based circus company's 25th production since 1984. The cast for its premiere included 54 performing artists from 16 different countries. Created and directed by Deborah Colker, OVO (Portuguese for "egg") contemplates insects in all their beauty, action and curiosity. Brazilian composer Berna Ceppas transforms their flight, leaps, creeping and crawling into a samba-influenced choreographic spectacle augmented by the constant flutter and hum of real insect sounds.
With well over a thousand performances to date, OVO long ago took flight as one of the Cirque's most popular and rewarding extravaganzas. As Albany, New York's Times Union said of OVO in 2020, "In our digital age, it's reassuring to remember that non-simulated, filter-free entertainment still has the power to dazzle and transport us."
What is Cirque du Soleil: OVO?
Upon its Montreal debut in 2009, OVO became Cirque du Soleil's most audacious and virtuosic new-circus show to date. A trio of principal characters — Master Flipo, Foreigner and Ladybug — keeps this arena spectacular in constant motion, as awestruck insects become intensely interested in a mysterious egg's sudden appearance. OVO teems with life, and Cirque du Soleil's talented cast mirrors the insect world's natural abilities to fly, balance and leap with a lifetime of practice and precision.
During one of the company's largest flying acts, 10 scarab beetles on three platforms toss a single beetle back and forth. A colorfully costumed dragonfly flits about, red ants juggle chunks of kiwi and corncobs with their feet, and butterflies cling gracefully to one another as they float through the air. For OVO's grand finale, the large span used for brilliant lighting effects transforms into a two-story climbing wall onto which trampoline-powered crickets are hurled as though onto a vertical stage. Cockroaches, grasshoppers and other insects serve as supporting characters throughout the evening's dozen acrobatic tours de force.
What an incredible first act! Thrilling performances, amazing costumes, set reveals and stunts galore. We were gushing about it during the intermission. Then came the second half... which featured none of the spectacle of the earlier part (aside from the finale!), far too much reliance on the clowns, and an anticlimactic ending. It's a noble attempt at a good show but it just fizzled out.
The show from beginning to end was spectacular. This makes a great date night event. Never been disappointed.
We enjoyed it very much, but quickly realized this was tailored to children also. The theme was about insects and this kids were instantly mesmerized by their humorous antics. The acrobatics and dancing was excellent, so I can say it was a success for all ages.
My son gave us the tickets I dint how to redeem them on my phone , but the lady at my he front desk was very helpful and friendly. . That , i really enjoyed everything of course the show . Too
Found the show very slow, did not really hold my intetest and attentions very well. This was probably the least favorite cirque show that i have been to/seen.
Huge fan of cirque since I was 6 years old, saw Ovo and was again blown away by the talent of the performers, the comedy built into the show, the costumes and the elaborate sets! Brought my sister in law who’s never been and she is now as obsessed as me! Thank you Cirque!

OVO was likely my least favorite cirque (out of 10 or 12). Music, comedy, acrobatics and theme were all ok, but not up to the cirque standards of shows that have come to Winnipeg, or those in Vegas or Florida.
LOVED it! What talent! The whole show was so entertaining but my favorite part was the grasshoppers jumping on the wall. The costumes were amazing as was the music/musicians.
We had an amazing time. The show is great entertainment for young and old. The performers did an outstanding job. So talented. We would see it again. A must see.

First I was surprised by the songs, they were all Brazilian rhythms, all the characters and performances. This was 2 day ago and I'm still talking about the show.
The strength and gymnastics was very good , the artists were truly professional and made everything look easy
Cirque du Soleil’s run of “Ovo” here in Winnipeg is a hit that the entire family will enjoy. Audience members old and young can find a commanding sense of excitement with this dynamic circus performance. The tickets were reasonably. “Ovo” has one of the top lighting and sound designs next to the Michael Jackson show. I can confidently say that you cannot go wrong with Cirque du Soleil."

Ovo was excellent. Sound, lighting and visuals were awesome. Acrobatics were amazing and there was, as always, a little light comedy thrown in. We have seen about 5 different Cirque shows over the years and Ovo didn't disappoint.
What a show! Action packed from beginning to the end. Such talent! Totally appropriate for any age group and taste. Loved every minute, if you don’t go it’s your loss!
One of the best shows I have seen in awhile. Have seen all the Vegas productions. This was amazing.
