Cirque du Soleil: Corteo on Tour

Like the deceased clown whose festive fantasy funeral it portrays, Corteo has risen again to assume its joyful place in the Cirque du Soleil solar system.

One of some 20 active Cirque du Soleil shows, Corteo closed its "Grand Chapiteau" – or "big tent" – run in Quito, Ecuador, in December 2015 after more than 3,500 performances seen by more than 5 million people since its Montreal premiere a decade earlier. In 2018, Corteo reopened in New Orleans as an even bigger and better arena experience slated for a two-year tour.

If you love clowns, Corteo is the show for you. Taking its title from the Italian word for "cortège," or procession, Corteo offers a parade of brilliant entertainments in a carnivalesque atmosphere. It was inspired originally by "The Grand Parade: Portrait of the Artist as Clown," a 2004 exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada.

That exhibition's vast array of circus life, from 18th-century fairgrounds to Picasso's harlequins, was transformed into an in-the-round big-top experience by director Daniele Finzi Pasca. Pasca founded the Swiss clown troupe Teatro Sunil and directed several other Cirque du Soleil spectacles.

While all of the show's principal characters are clowns – including the Dead Clown, Clowness, Giant Clown, and Little Clown – the 62-member cast, from more than a dozen countries, also features aerialists, acrobats, musicians, jugglers, contortionists, hoopers, and gymnasts in addition to its many jubilant jesters.

Costume designer Dominique Lemieux was inspired by "raw and luxurious" European fabrics from the early 20th century and commedia dell'arte characters from the 16th to the 18th centuries. A labyrinth matching one on the floor of France's famed Chartres Cathedral graces the stage. And French painter Adolphe Willette's fantasy Parisian bohemian scene Parc Domine (1885) inspired the show's elaborate water-colored curtains. Those curtains hide "Patience," an imposing overhead structure holding up the rails traversed by four platform carts.

Its stunning mixture of acrobatics and character-driven acting has been Cirque du Soleil's calling card since 1984, when what is now the world's largest theatrical production was founded in Montreal by street performers Guy Laliberté and Gilles Ste-Croix. With Corteo, Cirque du Soleil has outdone itself with an epic tribute to the circus world's comical essence: the clown.

Great athletic acrobatic abiity, some quirky plot lines

by Kevin on 1/23/24Climate Pledge Arena - Seattle

This was a family friendly event. Yay! It looked like all the actors were having a great time. Some of the skits did not make sense. There was amazingly great athletic and acrobatic abilities on display. Really enjoyed that part of the show. Would probably want to attend a different version of this type of event in the future.

    Very disappointed

by Cookie on 1/23/24Climate Pledge Arena - Seattle

We got there and the stuff was not helping at all!! Just standing there! I had to lose time looking for my seat! Plus the show was very boring! I don’t like it at all! 👎🏼👎🏼

    Bad angle

by Itsme on 1/23/24Climate Pledge Arena - Seattle

The show itself was beautiful. At least what we could see of the show. They way the seats were represented on ticketmaster seemed to have a great view. Unfortunately, they had a curtain block off because the stage was in the middle of the areana, making our seats at the very end where we could only see 2/3rds of the actual performance. I would have paid more for different seats if I was aware of the barricade.

    Will definitely go again!

by Kat on 1/23/24Climate Pledge Arena - Seattle

This was my first experience attending a Cirque Du Soleil show. I will definitely go to another one if I get the chance. The skills, strength, and talent of the performers is amazing. I loved the story line for Corteo as well. I didn't realize until intermission that there were actually live musicians! What an incredible experience all around. Thank you for coming to Washington State!

    Underwhelming....

by Kunio on 1/23/24Climate Pledge Arena - Seattle

We have been going to Cirque du Soleil performances for many years. Corteo was by far the worst. It felt like a theater with a few standard acrobatics.

    Wow!

by Tessa on 1/23/24Climate Pledge Arena - Seattle

What an amazing show. So much to watch. The time flies. The acrobatics that are performed are top notch. We enjoyed it immensely. This is my 6th time seeing a Cirque Du Soliel show & I will continue going as often as I am able. The only thing I can say was not so good us that people arrived after the show started & it was very rude & distracting.

    Need more air circulation!

by Seattle on 1/23/24Climate Pledge Arena - Seattle

Fun event with good views from the seats. However, extremely hot and stuffy in the arena. Made the overall experience a bit unbearable.

A children’s theatrical show at best.

by Sanny on 1/23/24Climate Pledge Arena - Seattle

Regrettably, the event didn't meet the high expectations I had, and it lacked the extraordinary elements I associate with Cirque du Soleil, reminiscent of a standard circus rather than a Vegas-style extravaganza. The scarcity of impressive gymnastics and the prevalence of amateur tricks left much to be desired. Only a handful of acts stood out, making the overall show feel more like a children's theatrical performance than the anticipated world-class spectacle.

    Great Show, Terrible Location

by Tahsin on 1/23/24Climate Pledge Arena - Seattle

Ushers kept letting people in 30 mins into the show. Completely ruined our experience.

This is the third time I’ve been to a cirque du soleil show and I’m never disappointed. Such an awesome time. Highly recommend if you’ve never been to a cirque show.

    Bad venue, mediocre show

by In Seattle on 1/23/24Climate Pledge Arena - Seattle

Seattle’s climate pledge arena is not the right venue for Cirque du Soleil. I’m sure they did their best but the far seats are too far and too high. The event just did not feel very intimate. The show itself is also confused, and one of the least interesting of the many Cirque du Soleil performances that I have seen.

Went to see the Cirque du Soleil with 2 children. The kids absolutely loved the show. They had never seen anything like this before. A show full of beautiful acrobatics, music, songs, costumes etc. It was a great evening.

Enlightenment, joy, sadness about life and death

by Was amazing and was an item off my bucket list fulfilled! on 1/22/24Climate Pledge Arena - Seattle

Was an experience of numerous emotions, colorful, vibrant with a twist of delightful humor and joy. Also about death and reunion adding sadness. Showing through eyes of a man, dreaming with illusions , sparkling angels appearing from above and the rest is the adventure of the end of the beginning.

    Floor seats very inconformidad.

by Seattle corteo on 1/22/24Climate Pledge Arena - Seattle

Show was very good, except when they bring some Mans wearing woman's dressing and dancing like Disney princess. we respect adults orientation but we bring our kids to show not to make them feel confused after they been ask about. We pay for floor seat but I will never recommend those uncomfortable seat. Better place at Redmond WA, Marymoor Park field.
