Cirque du Soleil: Corteo on Tour
Like the deceased clown whose festive fantasy funeral it portrays, Corteo has risen again to assume its joyful place in the Cirque du Soleil solar system.
One of some 20 active Cirque du Soleil shows, Corteo closed its "Grand Chapiteau" – or "big tent" – run in Quito, Ecuador, in December 2015 after more than 3,500 performances seen by more than 5 million people since its Montreal premiere a decade earlier. In 2018, Corteo reopened in New Orleans as an even bigger and better arena experience slated for a two-year tour.
If you love clowns, Corteo is the show for you. Taking its title from the Italian word for "cortège," or procession, Corteo offers a parade of brilliant entertainments in a carnivalesque atmosphere. It was inspired originally by "The Grand Parade: Portrait of the Artist as Clown," a 2004 exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada.
That exhibition's vast array of circus life, from 18th-century fairgrounds to Picasso's harlequins, was transformed into an in-the-round big-top experience by director Daniele Finzi Pasca. Pasca founded the Swiss clown troupe Teatro Sunil and directed several other Cirque du Soleil spectacles.
While all of the show's principal characters are clowns – including the Dead Clown, Clowness, Giant Clown, and Little Clown – the 62-member cast, from more than a dozen countries, also features aerialists, acrobats, musicians, jugglers, contortionists, hoopers, and gymnasts in addition to its many jubilant jesters.
Costume designer Dominique Lemieux was inspired by "raw and luxurious" European fabrics from the early 20th century and commedia dell'arte characters from the 16th to the 18th centuries. A labyrinth matching one on the floor of France's famed Chartres Cathedral graces the stage. And French painter Adolphe Willette's fantasy Parisian bohemian scene Parc Domine (1885) inspired the show's elaborate water-colored curtains. Those curtains hide "Patience," an imposing overhead structure holding up the rails traversed by four platform carts.
Its stunning mixture of acrobatics and character-driven acting has been Cirque du Soleil's calling card since 1984, when what is now the world's largest theatrical production was founded in Montreal by street performers Guy Laliberté and Gilles Ste-Croix. With Corteo, Cirque du Soleil has outdone itself with an epic tribute to the circus world's comical essence: the clown.
This was an awesome show with so much talent. There were lots of oohs and ahhs moments. I was impressed by so many diverse performances. Cirque never disappoints.
The performances were spectacular! The costumes were amazing and appropriate for the time period! The aerial presentations were unbelievable! I was spellbound the entire time!
Show was fun and had quite a few wow factors. Only negative thing was the late comers coming find their seats with their phone lights on after show started. Besides that one thing the show was great all in all.
acts were awesome Costumes were beautiful and music was great
Completely enjoyed the performance, would recommend it to any and every one. Building needs to be updated or replaced. Question if it's up to code. Railing in front of raised seating appears too low (fall risk) / no railing to assist when walking up or down bleacher type raisers (another fall risk) / escalator unavailable / elevators too small to accommodate crowd / stairways are steep and surfaces for feet are too shallow.
The best thing ive ever seen! was a wonderful experience that everyone should see at least once in their life
The show Corteo was incredible!! The visuals were off the charts and the performance was one of a kind. The performers all seemed to really be enjoying themselves and I loved the interaction with the audience. Great show for all ages
I have to say. I’ve been to quite a few cirque shows and I love them. But this was my least favorite. I thought it was just very chaotic. The story book port that they brought out just didn’t make sense everybody running around yelling. And it didn’t have its normal two clowns that are always hilarious throughout. I’ve seen some shows multiple times. But I wouldn’t see this one again.
This was my first Cirque show and I loved it. My wife has been to quite a few of their shows. She said this show was one of the best she has ever seen. The performers were remarkable, and I loved the crowd interaction. Although this was my first, it definitely will not be my last. I plan see to some shows the next time we are in Vegas. Very impressed!!
We loved Cirque de Soleil: Corteo. The performers were amazing and all the acrobats deserve a round of applause. The crowd interaction during one performance was entertaining. I love Cirque de Soleil and look forward to seeing them every time they come to my city.
It's OK, not what I expected from a Cirque performance based upon my previous experiences. The show was different from the production clips I've viewed, missing performances! The finale left a LOT to be desired. The audience sat unaware in their seats waiting for more AFTER the lack luster "grand"finale.
Excitement...Entertainment... Funny...Thrilled... Suspense...Action...Good message. 🙂👍🎉🎊
The theme of the show was hard to follow and understand. The tumblers, jugglers and all the talented performers made up for the theme of the show.
I took my family and we enjoyed the show from beginning to end. The acrobatic, music and performance were entertaining.
Was such a great experience with family who's always said they wanted to see a Cirque show, however did not think we'd get to Vegas. The talent with the cast that came through Beaumont, Texas was mind blowing. We appreciate everything and cannot wait to attend another show by Cirque in the Beaumont/Houston area!
Great cast! Cirque du Soleil never disappoints! We saw Corteo in a smaller venue than usual but the quality of the show was excellent!
Everyone should see a Cirque du Soleil performance at least twice in their lives. A circus, play, concert all in one. A sensory extravaganza. Great for adults, even better for kids. Ford Park in Beaumont is physically perfect for C-D-S’s current production: Corteo. The performance happens on (& off) a central stage, with the crowd equally divided on both sides. Ford Park had some negatives that detracted from the overall experience. Staff had to escort attendees to their seats in a circuitous & inefficient manner. People were still milling about as the show started. The seats are small & uncomfortable. They advertised wine for sale, but none available. You would think Ford Park would have stocked up on adult beverages for a long weekend with multiple performances. The spectacle that is Cirque du Soleil rose to the occasion and more than compensated for any problems with the venue. Spectacular show!
I’ve gone to a handful of Cirques and have been amazed but the entire experience each and every time…except this time and I really feel as though the venue played a huge part in it. The whole experience was subpar this time. Apparently there were technical difficulties during several shows. There were more skits rather than big performances and I think that was to fill in the gaps for acts that may have been omitted. Lighting inside the venue was nearly nonexistent with lots of people using their flashlights to get around and trying to hold onto one another so they don’t get separated because you couldn’t see in front of you. This was before the show, during intermission, and after the show concluded. Yellow caution tape in multiple places and you couldn’t see where you you were going. I think because of the venue issues, this has been my least favorite Cirque to date. I realize certain things are out of their control and they do what they can with what with they have, but it definitely made a difference. The performances were absolutely amazing as usual, but this is the first time that I have walked away from a performance feeling as though I didn’t get my money’s worth
We had an excellent time. People need to know that the seats closest to the stage will cause them to look up a lot at the performance. On the map it is hard to tell that kind of thing. But, the show itself was awesome! Loved It.
This was a birthday gift for m6 daughters. The show was awesome. We all love cirque and see it whenever we can
