Cirque du Soleil: Corteo on Tour

Like the deceased clown whose festive fantasy funeral it portrays, Corteo has risen again to assume its joyful place in the Cirque du Soleil solar system.

One of some 20 active Cirque du Soleil shows, Corteo closed its "Grand Chapiteau" – or "big tent" – run in Quito, Ecuador, in December 2015 after more than 3,500 performances seen by more than 5 million people since its Montreal premiere a decade earlier. In 2018, Corteo reopened in New Orleans as an even bigger and better arena experience slated for a two-year tour.

If you love clowns, Corteo is the show for you. Taking its title from the Italian word for "cortège," or procession, Corteo offers a parade of brilliant entertainments in a carnivalesque atmosphere. It was inspired originally by "The Grand Parade: Portrait of the Artist as Clown," a 2004 exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada.

That exhibition's vast array of circus life, from 18th-century fairgrounds to Picasso's harlequins, was transformed into an in-the-round big-top experience by director Daniele Finzi Pasca. Pasca founded the Swiss clown troupe Teatro Sunil and directed several other Cirque du Soleil spectacles.

While all of the show's principal characters are clowns – including the Dead Clown, Clowness, Giant Clown, and Little Clown – the 62-member cast, from more than a dozen countries, also features aerialists, acrobats, musicians, jugglers, contortionists, hoopers, and gymnasts in addition to its many jubilant jesters.

Costume designer Dominique Lemieux was inspired by "raw and luxurious" European fabrics from the early 20th century and commedia dell'arte characters from the 16th to the 18th centuries. A labyrinth matching one on the floor of France's famed Chartres Cathedral graces the stage. And French painter Adolphe Willette's fantasy Parisian bohemian scene Parc Domine (1885) inspired the show's elaborate water-colored curtains. Those curtains hide "Patience," an imposing overhead structure holding up the rails traversed by four platform carts.

Its stunning mixture of acrobatics and character-driven acting has been Cirque du Soleil's calling card since 1984, when what is now the world's largest theatrical production was founded in Montreal by street performers Guy Laliberté and Gilles Ste-Croix. With Corteo, Cirque du Soleil has outdone itself with an epic tribute to the circus world's comical essence: the clown.

We watched the Sunday matinee. We were amazed at the talents of the performers. Our grandchildren were mesmerized by everything they saw. The talent and skill of the performers was truly astounding.

The worst Cirque show we have seen in over 30 years

by Merlin on 9/20/23Footprint Center - Phoenix

None of the acts were original and have been shown on TV numerous times. We did not know what was going on since there was no explanation as to the show reason.

What talent! Loved being entertained by such talent. Wish tickets weren’t so crazy expensive. Have vision challenges and would love to afford to sit closer.

    Amazing show! Go see it!

by Spectacular on 9/20/23Footprint Center - Phoenix

Corteo was an amazing and spectacular show. Took my daughter, my mom, and friends, we all loved it. All of the new acts were splendid and incredible. I know how much practice there must have been and it was awesome. Being an aerialist myself, the only thing I felt was lacking were the aerial acts. There was a pole and straps act that did incredible, but felt like the performers were holding back and could have done more. There were modified lyras too and those girls did an amazing job, I really enjoyed them. The acrobatics were awesome and the humor kept us laughing until the end. Will go see another show when they come to AZ.

My wife and I found the Cirque du Soleil; Corteo to be very entertaining and the staff at the venue very accommodating. The physical capabilities of the actors and actresses were unbelievable. This was the first time I have experienced a Cirque du Soleil and I am looking forward to my next show.

Had so much fun at Corteo. It was really great to have floor seats this time. The way they split the audience made it so much more intimate. Just loved it. Husband did too. We are hooked!

    Magical Show

by Gypsyjwls on 9/20/23Footprint Center - Phoenix

I took my two youngest daughters (17 and 22) for my daughters birthday. The Show was magical and a great experience for their first Cirque du Soliel show! We had 3rd row seats, but every seat in the house is a good seat for these shows. Would highly recommend to everyone of all ages!

    Awesome Show

by Chris on 9/20/23Footprint Center - Phoenix

Corteo was awesome. We had seen other Cirque Du Soleil shows in Vegas and was very pleased with them. This one did not disappoint either. The Footprint Center was a great location for these types of shows and I believe it contributed to the show being as good as it was. I would highly recommend this show.

    Wonderful

by JAK on 9/20/23Footprint Center - Phoenix

Not the best venue for Cirque du Soleil with a split crowd, but Cirque has done it again. Fun. Exciting. Quality humor. Time flies by. A couple of miscues and not the best Cirque, but well worth the time and every penny.

    Not their best

by Lilbear on 9/20/23Footprint Center - Phoenix

Show was awkward and slow. Only good part was the acrobatics, which were short and few. The filler parts were long and weird (golf/golfer part and the Romeo and Juliet scene) didn’t seem to match the show. I’m not sure I’ll go to another cirque de soleil show feel like it’s lost it’s magic

    not worth the money

by David on 9/20/23Footprint Center - Phoenix

the parts worth watching could be done in about 20 minutes. Save your money and go see a show in Vegas...this was one step above a good high school musical.

    Weirdly entertaining

by Az Sun Devil on 9/19/23Footprint Center - Phoenix

The acrobatics was awesome. The storyline was a little morbid. I would still go to a Cirque de Soleil show, with a different premise.
