    Keep expectations low

by Kcfaninstl on 5/18/14Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

Fortunately, I read several of the recent reviews prior to attending the show. So I had an idea what to expect. If your goal is to see an icon perform in an intimate environment, go. If your expectation is to see Mr. Berry perform like he did 50-60 years ago, don't go. The slower blues songs stood out performance-wise. The crowd singing along with the favorites helped make the faster paced songs more enjoyable. The band does a nice job supplementing Mr. Berry's playing. His daughter is a very good singer and harmonica player and has a good sense when her dad needs her vocal and harmonica skills. Opening cover band was pretty good.

    What can I say?

by Anonymous on 5/17/14Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

I am now 53. Mr. Berry was an international star before I was born. Most importantly he was the essential person to make the lead guitarist the most important musician in the rock and roll genre. His guitar was out of tune, he spoke instead of sang, he forgot lines, and there was no choreographically moduality to entire show. In other words, Mr. Berry did what Mr. Berry wanted to do. Of course this was a perfect way for an 87 year old genius to behave. If he was different (better) I would have been disappointed.

Still rocking after all these years!

by Abbluesfan on 5/17/14Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

I was amazed at the longevity and popularity of the man. He can sure move and grove. His children playing and singing with him was an added treat.

    Legend? Yes. Concert? No.

by Rhondab57 on 5/4/14Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

There is no question that Chuck Berry is a legend, and it seemed almost a crime that I have lived in St. Louis for most of my life and had never seen him play in person. I had heard that he had some trouble remembering words, so I was prepared for that. Unfortunately, it went way, way beyond that. His band, including his daughter and son, were terrific, and they played their hearts out. Chuck, too, played his heart out, but rarely played in the same key as the others. To say it was a cacophony is to put it mildly. He tried so hard but could not remember chords, tunes, or words, so what we got was a few correct bars followed by many incorrect bars and then abrupt endings in the middle of songs the rest of the band were playing. I certainly understand this legend of a man not wanting to hang up his hat, but if you go hear him, it is important that you know what you will be seeing and hearing. If you choose to go, you can still say you got to see and hear the great Chuck Berry, live. The audience obviously loved him, despite his significant limitations, so I feel like an old curmudgeon by not recommending his concert, but I think it's important to be honest so that potential audience members can choose whether to embrace the elderly man or to remember him as he was.

    Sucked

by ButchtheIronworker on 3/22/14Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

Although I was really glad to get to see Chuck Berry finally, and it was in the Duck Room at Blueberry Hill, Chuck was so drunk he couldn't play his guitar in tune (at all), and could barely remember the words, when he did remember them. I give it 2 stars because the warm up band was fantastic. But to have paid $80 for two tickets, drive over an hour to get to the venue and then have to shuffle around to either see around tall idiots that thought they needed to be in front of everyone else while trying not to get my beer knocked out of my hand by people on their way to the john, it wasn't worth even getting to see the legend of Chuck Berry. I'm 55 and my wife is 50, so standing for a concert is no fun. But standing in a tight spot with a severely bad performance is not worth a $10 ticket even. Then to find out from our 29 year old daughter that it's been that way for years, I felt ripped off. Anyway, we left early, (about 10 o'clock), and counted it as a lost night. Come on, Chuck. You can do better, even at 87. To be fair, his son and daughter were really good!

    Chuck at 87

by Wantenna on 2/22/14Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

It's a chance of a lifetime to see a rock legend up close in an intimate setting like Blueberry Hill. Acoustics are incredible and the venue seems to really relax Chuck and allow him to do things that he would not normally do, such as tell stories, play piano, etc. If you plan to go, be prepared for the human frailties that accompany the age of 87. The voice is not quite as strong, there will be a few missed guitar chords, a few lyrical slips, but the moments of classic brilliance are still plentiful and worth every penny and much more.

    Thank God for Chuck Berry

by PeterBest on 11/18/13Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

The crowd was thrilled to be in the same room as the true Father of Rock & Roll. Chuck had good energy and things started out great. Very quickly the fact that he is 87 years old is obvious. It is hard to say if he can't or won't play the guitar anymore. Very often he seemed lost or blamed the equipment. He seemed more interested in talking with the band members in the middle of songs. Chuck would disappear completely from songs and let his two very talented kids take over. In the end it turns out to be a Chuck Berry Family and Friends concert with the master sitting on the sidelines. It was disappointing but I went there half expecting this to happen. It doesn't lessen my love, admiration or thanks for Chuck Berry. He gaves us so much. It is unfair what time does to all of us.

    Love Chuck

by Lkh59 on 11/17/13Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

After talking for quite some time about seeing Chuck Berry, I finally got to do it! I love it! Blueberry Hill is always a fun, homey place to enjoy some good food. The Duck Room is just plain fun. The opening act was phenominl. They got the party atmosphere started. And then Chuck Berry came on! His joy at performing came through like a sparkly diamond! He totally rocked, and the show was even more fantastic because of his son, daughter, and friends who obviously love him. They all made sure Mr. Berry got to do his thing and that everything would come off smoothly. I feel so lucky that I got to experience this show! Rock on!

    Another bucket list item done

by jabberwock on 9/21/13Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

For decades, I've had on my bucket list to see Chuck Berry on or near our shared birthday. I wish I had done this a long time ago. Lesson learned: Never put off bucket list items. I had read about how Chuck's doing, so it went pretty much as I was led to believe. It is sad the man can't really play anymore, and has trouble remembering the words to his legendary songs, but here and there he nailed 4 to 8 measures of chords or rhythm that really made up for it. I'm glad I had the opportunity, and would note that I'm much younger but couldn't play the guitar as well as he currently can!

    Chuck is really something!

by Anonymous on 9/21/13Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

Chuck Berry is still rockin St Louis, and still retaining his great sence of humor. Came onstage and asked" Does anybody know any Chuck Berry songs, because I sure don't!" He certainly remembers the beginning of all the songs and at his age, thats really something. Hope he is still having fun at this and its not too hard on him, because as long as he loves it the people will too.

    Incredible

by LeahJacks on 8/18/13Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

Really amazing! Get there early to get a good seat (there are around 6-8 rows of seats in front of the stage and then standing around the stage). Also you wait inside and if there's more than one of you then you can grab drinks for everyone whilst you wait. Really worth it, the best concert I've ever been to.

    Sad

by TMblows on 8/17/13Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

Chuck shouldn't be on stage anymore. He can't play guitar and is continually out of key and time with the band. He doesn't appear to know what song he's doing half the time. Waste of time and money.

What more is there to say about a legend?

by zalbatt on 6/14/13Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

While Chuck can't hit all the notes and chords anymore, he is still amazing. I can still hear that voice in there and at times he still kills those famous guitar riffs. His daughter is great on the harmonica and vocals. His son is also great on the guitar. For and 86 year old man Chuck still rocks it.

    Chuck Berry

by Kareville on 6/7/13Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

I have always wanted to see Chuck Berry. This year as a birthday present to myself I took two friends and we flew to St. Louis to see him in concert. It was amazing! Chuck Berry is 86 years old and still entertaining audiences. It's also neat to know that his children are a part of his band. His daughter does an excellent job on the harmonica as well as singing. This was truly a dream come true.
