Little Richard and Chuck Berry still rock!

by Kendal on 8/28/09San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino - Highland

Wow, these guys are still going strong. LIttle Richard still belts it out and plays the piano like he's a 20 year old. He jokes with the audience and sings all his classic greats. Chuck Berry was amazing. He plays his guitar like its an extension of his arm. He never took a break between songs. He just kept on going with one song immediately flowing into the next. He played and danced across the stage. He invited women from the audience to come up on stage and dance with him. The crowd went wild. It was a blast! If you ever have a chance to see either one of them do it. You won't be disappointed.

little richard at 77 vs chuck berry

by brucethetemplar on 8/28/09San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino - Highland

little richard at 77 is a contemporary. he shows plenty of energy and has taken his classic tunes and remastered them for today. he is a don't miss. chuck berry sings his old songs with no energy and most likly is hoping to collect a check and have the show over(as this event was held in an indian gaming house he makes you want to go to your favorite table).

    Chuck Berry / Little Richard

by DigitalDave on 8/28/09San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino - Highland

The venue was San Manuel Indian Casino...I would not go to that venue again. Little Richard was only OK. The sound mix was terrible, giant booming bass, and the kick drum was the only identifiable line. The bass player got lost in the muddy low end. LRs piano could only be heard when he solo'd. A keyboard player on a Hammond /Leslie, well, you could see him, but you sure couldn't hear him. Musically, it was OK, though I think LR uses his horn section more than he needs to. Now, they were mic'd way up, and could have been lowered quite a bit...His voice was just OK. All in all, a disappointment, though I would have to say most of the blame goes right to the sound crew. A decent mix may have made the show a lot better. Chuck Berry was much better, probably because he only had himself, a drummer, keyboard and bass. Less for the sound guys to mess up. Although, when the show started, you couldn't hear CB and the piano was was low. Took 2 songs to fix. Bad Bad sound guys. But the performance was OK. Just OK. I guess I expected more, but these guys are really pretty old. LR, according to him, is 76, and CB has got to be about there, so, for a 70 something entertainers, well, just getting onstage and performing anything is pretty amazing. But was the show worth the money? That's a definite NO.

Little Richard and Chuck Berry show

by buttchecks on 8/28/09San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino - Highland

The sound system was afull, the seating was bad because it was on a level seating and you had to look between people to see the show. Everyone could tell Little Richard was sick and could not perform as usual. Chuck berry did not have enough of a group to make a good sound and did not even say good bye when he left the stage. Im glad I was able to see them for once in my life but that sound system was really bad.

This is a don't miss concert. Opening band, New Soul Cowboys, was great. And when Chuck came on stage the crowd went wild. It was a trip down memory land for sure. We danced the night away. Well worth the money and plan to do it again.

    Chuck Berry (Blueberry Hill)

by Hexy on 7/16/09Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

Chuck Berry was a thrill to see. He is simply amazing. I feel honored to have seen this man play. 83 years old and he's still playin the guitar just like a ringin a bell. He did the duck walk across the floor, shaked, rattled and rolled!! What is the most awsome is he has that amazing sound .....all from a vintage Fender Bassman amp and his old red Gibson faithful guitar with Stereo controls....simply amazing sound that was too cool to witness live and not just off an old album. All other modern bands including the lead act of the night use amps with special effect boxes (distortion, chorus, etc). Not Chuck Berry...just the guitar, the old red Gibson, the old amp...and of course the man with the magic hands. It was simply awesome and want to do it again. He even signed some autographs.

    Chuck Chuck Chuck

by Crankyoldlady on 7/16/09Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

Chuck was great, but there were only enough seats for about half the people. I had my 76 year old parents with me - Dad's knees are quite sore today. Bad Duck Room, Bad!

    You want it right.

by LcpINC on 7/16/09Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

It was cool to see the opening act Scorfina (REO / Pavlovs Dog) who put on an energetic and rockin' show. Good to see that old Dogs have new tricks. They were pretty tight, and played a nice mixture of new material and classics. There was a lot of Scorfina equipment to be carried off before Chuck could be set up. Virtually a complete stage swap from mics, amps, drums, guitars, etc. So Chuck Berry started a little past his normal time of 10:00 PM. From the start you could tell something was a little off. Chuck almost fell flat on his face when he tripped over his new shoes. In between the first few songs Chuck would attempt to re-tune his guitar, and at one point his long time bassist came over and adjusted 3 strings. About 3 or 4 songs in, Chuck Sr. swapped out his guitar with Chuck Jr. Chuck Jr. went offstage to tune the guitar. After about 4 songs, Jr. comes back shaking his head, he couldn't tune it (more about that later), so Jr. gives Sr.'s guitar to the bass player, and Jr. begins playing bass. After two songs the bass player returns with the finely tuned guitar, and the show can begin in earnest. Chuck says that he feels like playing for another hour and a half, and the rest of the band seemed eagar. Ingrid sang, played (harmonica), and danced her heart out. Drummer, Bass and Keyboards are always strong. Chuck Jr. seems to gain momentum as the night goes on. Chuck was in a great mood. Jovial, comical and very talkative. You could tell aside from the tuning issue, that he was having a great time. Even playing on his son's Flying V, you knew you were seeing history. After the show a few people were talking to Jr., they were talking about the tuning issue. He said..."You have to understand that my father's is practically deaf...no, really deaf." Therefore it is hard for him to properly tune his guitar. Additionally, when Jr. went offstage to tune the guitar with the electonic tuner, he had problems. 1) the music on stage was loud 2) With the tuner he could tell if he had a proper G, but was unable to tell what octive that G was from. I guess that's why they have guitar techs. I had a great time even though it was a disjointed show. I will continue to see Chuck at every show he does at Blueberry Hill. I just can't get enough.

    Hail Hail Rock N Roll

by Bon1 on 7/11/09Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

The man is getting on in years, he may not hit all the notes anymore, but there's only one Chuck Berry. Forget the rest. See the best. Chuck's the man.
