About

Acclaimed Grammy Award-winning mandolinist, singer, songwriter, composer, and MacArthur Fellow recipient of the prestigious "Genius Grant", Chris Thile is a multifaceted musical talent, described by The Guardian as "that rare being: an all-round musician," and hailed by NPR as a "genre-defying musical genius." Thile is a founding member of the highly influential string bands Punch Brothers and Nickel Creek, and has collaborated with countless luminaries from Yo-Yo Ma to Fiona Apple to Brad Mehldau. For four years, Thile hosted public radio favorite Live from Here with Chris Thile (formerly known as A Prairie Home Companion). With his broad outlook, Thile creates a distinctly American canon and a new musical aesthetic for performers and audiences alike, giving the listener "one joyous arc, with the linear melody and vertical harmony blurring into a single web of gossamer beauty" (New York Times).

Over the last year, Thile has been touring with Nickel Creek in support of the critically acclaimed 2023 release Celebrants, and captivating audiences with a playfully ambitious biographical composition entitled ATTENTION! (a narrative song cycle for extroverted mandolinist and orchestra).

The wide-ranging program of Thile's 2025-2026 solo performances will feature selections from his acclaimed solo recordings of Bach's Sonatas and Partitas - including the upcoming second volume out this autumn - alongside his signature mix of classical, folk and improvisational brilliance.

  • Well worth it

A very simple concert easy to watch two very skilled musicians communicating with each other and the audience. Very funny in spots.

  • Chris Thile and Edgar Meyer are phenomenal

by PennyStreet on 10/14/14Town Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

This was my second time seeing this show and I am increasingly amazed at both the virtuosity and musicality of both of these musicians. It's like they dance together.

  • I love Chris

Wow! what an incredible performance at Town Hall. I took my Aunt who introduced me to this amazing music. I will remember this night forever. These guys are really funny too!

  • Aliens

by MaliaJL on 10/13/14Carolina Theatre - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

Edgar and Chris are alien lords that came down to Carolina Theatre and abducted the enraptured willing audience. We were subjected to an onslaught of primal vibrations transporting our collective consciousness through the ether to a cosmic listening sanctuary. Our eyes had to close to synthesize the otherwordly soundwaves forever altering our electrical synapses through the end of our tertiary existence and beyond as each subsequent decision will be affected by this spiritual revolution. We were returned to the Durham music hall having experienced a fourth dimensional consciousness massage.

Love the punch brothers in concert and Thiles tour last year of his Bach album, but this felt too out there and sparse... It lacked much of the fun he usually brings music wise and as a stage presence. Instead things felt quiet and serious, with he and Meyer trading off playing the rhythm section to the other's elaboration. Meyer wasn't that interesting when he had the spotlight, tending towards technically difficult but unapproachable, and Thiles parts weren't much better, with the exception of a few songs. Hopefully Thile's next effort is a bit livelier!

  • Speechless!

by Neurorad on 10/11/14Carolina Theatre - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

7 Billion people in the world, and we just saw the single BEST mandolin player and the single BEST bass player in the world play together in a flawlessly intertwined fusion of instruments, styles, personalities, and tone. Completely mesmerizing and unforgettable! Both Chris and Edgar have redefined their instruments by doing things with them that no one has ever done before them. Where will it end?! Thank God people like Chris and Edgar are out there preserving the integrity of acoustic music and true musicianship. I brought my 16 year old son and his friend (both budding musicians), and it warms my heart to know that THEY know what real music is and that they are able to sift through all the ear candy that kids are force fed today. Sadly, it sometimes takes talent of genius proportions to be heard through the audio clutter today. Thank you, Chris! Thank you, Edgar! I look forward to hearing whatever you do next.

Very worthwhile and they are so compatible. Compositions were very interesting.

  • Masters of their universe

by MDMango on 10/3/14Martha Rivers Ingram Center for the Performing Arts - Vanderbilt - NashvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Everything about this event was masterfully executed. From the performers, Chris and Edgar, who, in a world of diminishing discipline, are true masters of their instruments - to the technical crew - impeccable audio and lighting - this show was a first-class event.

One of the best shows I've seen. The contrast between the bass and mandolin and the expertise with which they were played reminded me of Jango Reinhart and Stepane Grapelli.

  • Another experimental night from Chris and Edgar

by LordVadar on 9/23/14Royce Hall - UCLA - Los AngelesRating: 3 out of 5

I am a long time fan of Chris Thile and his many musical experiments. When one listens to a musician over a long period of time as I have Chris, not every direction they take is of interest. For instance, I enjoyed Chris' concert last year that included Bach variations mixed in with a wide range of songs and I enjoyed the Goat Rodeo sessions concert at the Hollywood Bowl earlier this year. I do not like Jazz, I do not like Jazz fusion, and it turns out, I do not like bluegrass Jazz fusion. While I enjoyed the expertise of both Chris and Edgar - they are true virtuosos on their chosen instruments - and I enjoyed their bantering with each other and the audience, I did not enjoy the music. It happens. Would I go to another concert with Chris and whoever he is playing with - Yes!

Outstanding musicianship and collaboration. Royce Hall is a great setting.

  • Most amazing musicianship I've ever seen.

by mrjoedanny on 9/23/14Royce Hall - UCLA - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Chris Thile and Edgar Meyer are both masters of every aspect of their instruments. If they are not the best they are within the top 5 premier players in the world on Mandolin and Bass. While I've heard other projects from both artists the stuff they work on together just seems to me to be the most musical and fun to listen to. Their instruments bounce off each other like they're having a conversation (except this conversation is between Einstein and Tesla).

  • brilliant fellas

Just so you know... there was no singing. But the playing! They could only have reached these musical heights, these exotic musical hybrids, from being intrepid and gifted explorers. We are the beneficiaries of their adventures. Thank you, thank you. (Besides which... they're good-natured fellas.)

  • Very entertaining Chris

Great show. Wide variety of music with Bach, Thile originals and other melodies. Chris is an amazing mandolinist and not so bad of a vocalist.

  • Chris Thile is a modern master

by Celebrian on 11/13/13University Auditorium - GainesvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Two solid hours of musical bliss, from Bach to bluegrass. Chris Thile is one of the great performing artists of our time. He was engaging, funny, and, of course, phenomenal on the mandolin. One of the best concerts I've ever attended, and I see a lot, spanning all genres. Thile is truly a musical treasure.

  • Chris Thile will blow your mind

by TheBeggarsBand on 11/5/13University Auditorium - GainesvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Chris Thile is arguably the best mandolin player in the world and the guy just plays the thing like it's nobody's business. This is my second time seeing him and I was again speechless. It's not fair for one person to have that much talent! But I absolutely love his solo shows. He does a lot of improv which is generously crafted and makes his set list very interesting. It's incredible how he can get such a dynamic range out of a mandolin and make it completely enjoyable for the entire 2 hours he played. Also, Chris Thile seemed to really enjoy the Gainesville crowed and vowed he would come visit more often!

  • by Saxonsun333 on 11/5/13University Auditorium - GainesvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Chis Thile is a brilliant artist. He creates magic on the mandolin, and expresses full-range emotion while playing. He definitely has a bit of a comedic side as well. I enjoyed every second of his two hour performance!!!
