Let me start by saying that I flew out to California to see CHON from Minneapolis, MN. I am giving my experience at Ace of Spades 4 stars because of 2 things: one, I was on the left side of the stage and could hardly hear Eric. I heard Mario just fine, but it almost felt as though Eric was turned way down. Perhaps this is simply due to me being on the left side and they were mainly running sound from their amps...IDK. Two, I expected to hear their new album which just released, and also why they are touring...I mean the merch is all about the new album. Sadly, they played almost all old stuff (don't get me wrong, though, I love the old stuff). I would have rated this 5 stars, even with unbalanced audio, if I had expected to hear their previous albums, but alas.
Backstory to first hearing CHON. It was in Minneapolis when I went to hear Thrice and Circa Survive play. I kid you not, every single band that played that night, save one, was way too loud and the mixing was awful. Circa Survive sounds fine on record but live?! His little high-pitched voice was drowned out by the overdriven everything. By a landslide, CHON won me over by being so pure! I could hear every note, every kick, snare and symbol, and even a 6-string bass. I was sold. Ever since then I have been spreading the good news of CHON like a disciple of Jesus.
Love, Greg.
