CHON IN CONCERT:

Prog rockers Chon marry impressive musicianship to bouncy grooves, promising ticket buyers a live-wire concert experience that's both exciting and intriguingly heady. Six-string shredders Erick Hansel and Mario Camarena take a dizzying tag team approach to their guitars, winding through intricate melodies and jazzy harmonies on standouts like ìDewî, ìFluffyî, and ìBubble Dreamî. Mesmerized ticket buyers canít help but sway in time with the groupís nimble rhythm section, whose booming back beats and complex polyrhythms provide a syncopated backdrop for each instrumental. As Chon pushes the boundaries of prog rock, audiences get to witness guitar virtuosity, creative rhythms, and beautiful harmonies that are just as capable of blowing minds as they are of getting bodies grooving.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

While some Southern California teens spend their young lives obsessed with surfing and punk rock, the members Chon spent their days mastering rock instrumentals and learning to melt faces with their impressive chops. The San Diego-based math rockers began working on a self-titled demo in 2008 while playing the local emo and hardcore scene. After a two-year hiatus the young quartet regrouped and released the 2013 EP Newborn Sun. The following year they issued their debut album Grow before touring in support of bands like Circa Survive and Animal as Leaders. The exposure prepared them to undertake their first US headlining tour in 2016, with supporting acts Polyphia and Strawberry Girls. Word  continues to spread about the electrifying energy that Chon bring to the stage and fans canít wait to witness their astonishing technique in the flesh.

    Too loud

    by jazz on 11/10/19

We did not hear Chon. They were not going to come on until 10:45, and the volume was so loud that earplugs did not work and it hurt, so we left. Why? Why do bands have to make you deaf? Are they deaf? Maybe I missed a great show that would come later, looking at these reviews, but I was afraid, and I value my hearing.

There is no other band like CHON

by donzieja on 7/2/19House of Blues Chicago presented by Cricket Wireless - Chicago

Chon never fail to fill the room with sound. Not only is their music interesting, their tone and presence are unmatched. I've seen them three times and each time they have been amazing. The music is like heroin in your ears. When they first started I couldn't help but to lean my head back, close my eyes, and smile.

My Favorite Band, so why 4 stars?

by Greg on 6/8/19Ace of Spades - Sacramento

Let me start by saying that I flew out to California to see CHON from Minneapolis, MN. I am giving my experience at Ace of Spades 4 stars because of 2 things: one, I was on the left side of the stage and could hardly hear Eric. I heard Mario just fine, but it almost felt as though Eric was turned way down. Perhaps this is simply due to me being on the left side and they were mainly running sound from their amps...IDK. Two, I expected to hear their new album which just released, and also why they are touring...I mean the merch is all about the new album. Sadly, they played almost all old stuff (don't get me wrong, though, I love the old stuff). I would have rated this 5 stars, even with unbalanced audio, if I had expected to hear their previous albums, but alas. Backstory to first hearing CHON. It was in Minneapolis when I went to hear Thrice and Circa Survive play. I kid you not, every single band that played that night, save one, was way too loud and the mixing was awful. Circa Survive sounds fine on record but live?! His little high-pitched voice was drowned out by the overdriven everything. By a landslide, CHON won me over by being so pure! I could hear every note, every kick, snare and symbol, and even a 6-string bass. I was sold. Ever since then I have been spreading the good news of CHON like a disciple of Jesus. Love, Greg.

    Incredible Show

by Bungis on 6/27/18House of Blues Anaheim presented by Cricket Wireless - Anaheim

I was hyped up for this show for over a month and it did not disappoint. Tricot was by far my favorite set, but there set was too short. It was not even 30 minutes long. Up next was TTNG and they played very tight, but didn't really play some of the songs I would have hoped for. Still a great set. Polyphia was a surprise. I was expecting to be kind of disappointed, but they worked the crowd really well and got everyone moshing. Chon had their set at the end, and played everything I wanted to hear and more. Unfortunately, I was a little underwhelmed by their performance. They played kind of loose and messed up a couple times too many, but I don't hold it against them. Also, when they played "Can't Wait", the one who sang it obviously wasn't really a professional singer. It makes sense, since the original singer of the song is no longer in the band. The whole crowd was singing along anyway, so it was perfectly fine. I wish Chon had perfomed a little bit better, but it was a great concert over all.

    CHON/Polyphia never disappoint.

by ATateAnderson on 6/27/18House of Blues Anaheim presented by Cricket Wireless - Anaheim

Every band on the lineup was fantastic, and the stage setup combined with the venue made for just an all around fantastic experience. I’ll definitely try to see all of these bands again when they come back around.

I got in to Chon through a couple of friends. I regret nothing from venturing in to their music and expanding my taste. It was an amazing experience and I would definitely go see them play again. They rock!

    by GabeRodriguez111111111111 on 6/25/18Neptune Theatre - Seattle

The crowd was so lively, the floor was almost entirely a mosh pit. Damn that was lively. Not to mention how Chon absolutely killed it, and Polyphia, too. Got to see them after the show, they're very personable!

    These guys were outstanding!

by AlchemySound on 6/24/18Neptune Theatre - Seattle

I went to see Chon, Polyphia, and TTNG recently. Their show was flawless and truely a wonderful experience. The bands had really great chemistry with the croud. The croud itself was full of people who were enthudiastic and considerate. A super great show whether you wanna mosh or stand with your eyes closed and hedbang.

    A Mosh Pit for Chon?

by OffTheGoop on 6/17/18House of Blues Chicago presented by Cricket Wireless - Chicago

For my first math rock concert (Tricot, TTNG, Polyphia, Chon), I can certainly say this was probably the best it could've been. The energy was insane (see title), the sound quality was superb (however, Polyphia's guitars were a little bit too quiet/not mixed as well), the lighting was progressively more complex and entertaining between bands, and while the venue was somewhat smaller, there was enough room should you leave the main floor. Though, I would note that if you're short like me, it would be difficult to see the bands unless on the balcony. Regardless, the performance was incredible and these bands are so clean live! Unbelievable for the complexity of their music.

    ABSOLUTELY AMAZING

by idetour on 6/13/18Paradise Rock Club - Boston

Chon is the BEST band I've ever seen perform live! Each musician is incredibly talented and gives off an eccentric yet chill vibe. The entire crowd was moshing, crowd-surfing, and dancing to the upbeat, complex rhythms played by the band members. I would highly recommend to any music-lover looking for excitement in a concert.
