Chicago Blackhawks History

The Blackhawks were founded in 1926 and were part of the "Original Six" group of franchises, which constituted the NHL from 1942 until league expansion in 1967. The club won Stanley Cup Championships in the 1933-1934 and 1937-1938 seasons, but success proved largely elusive over the next two decades, except for one appearance in the final in 1943-1944. The 1960s signaled a rebirth for the franchise, with future Hall of Famers Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull, Pierre Pilote, and Glenn Hall leading the way. The Blackhawks defeated the Detroit Red Wings in the 1961 Stanley Cup Final, collecting their third championship.

The addition of eventual Hall of Fame goaltender Tony Esposito ahead of the 1969-1970 season marked the start of an era during which the team earned a Playoff berth in 28 consecutive seasons. In 1971 and 1973 the Blackhawks reached the Stanley Cup Final, losing both times to the Montreal Canadiens. More excellence followed in the 1990s, aided by the likes of Ed Belfour and Jeremy Roenick, as the Blackhawks finished with the league's best record in 1990-1991 and made the Stanley Cup Final in 1991-1992.

By selecting their eventual captain Jonathan Toews third overall in the 2006 NHL Draft, the Blackhawks began stocking up on young talent, also adding Patrick Kane first overall the following year. They returned to the Playoffs in 2008-2009, and in the very next season, Chicago defeated the Philadelphia Flyers for their first Stanley Cup Championship in 49 years. They added championships in 2013 — beating the Boston Bruins in a thrilling series that included three overtime games — and 2015, topping the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games.

Chicago Blackhawks at United Center

Home to the Chicago Blackhawks and Chicago Bulls, United Center — which opened in 1994 — is the largest NHL arena in the United States, with a capacity of 19,717 for hockey games. The idea for the arena was created in 1988 by William Wirtz, owner of the Chicago Blackhawks, and Jerry Reinsdorf, majority owner and Team Chairman of the Chicago Bulls. The United Center has hosted the Stanley Cup Finals three times: in 2010, 2013 and 2015. The Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup Championship in 2015 against the Tampa Bay Lightning at home in the sixth game — the first time since 1938 that the franchise clinched the Cup in Chicago.

    Great game, Record attendance

by Mediamst on 9/20/09United Center - Chicago

Really great game. Hawks led most of the game. It tied up with 2 minutes or so left. We lost in overtime. Record attendance for a pre-season game. Vince Vaughn was there and they showed him on the jumbo-tron TV.

    This event was great!

    by Miesh1004 on 9/20/09United Center - Chicago

This was an amazing time. This gives you more of an inside look at how the Hawks prepare for a game. The coaches wore a microphone for all to hear why these drills are important and what they are working on. Also, the players are more accessible for interviews and possible autographs. This is more interactive than any Hawks game.

    Blackhawks training camp festival

    by Wyso33 on 9/20/09United Center - Chicago

Great time. Nice to see them practice and the drills they do. A lot of things for kids. Shooting the puck, a band, fun jump... They had autograph sessions. The problem was they didn't tell you what players was going to be at your 'designated' time. That isn't that bad - but the players were over 30 min. late from the time posted. That makes it tough when waiting in line with children. Otherwise a very nice event.

    by Mimij296 on 9/20/09United Center - Chicago

The game was a lot of fun...these are the best seats we have had. We were right behind the players' bench. I could actually see up close how hot Patrick Sharp is.

Great to Have the Best Show in Town Back!!!

by LucyC on 9/20/09United Center - Chicago

Even though the Blackhawks aren't back to playoff status yet, it is only preseason after all, it was great to see them at the United Center again. The team was minus several of last years players (some haven't reported yet) but they played hard and are working on getting back to being the best show in town. You can never go wrong on going to see them. There is a lot of action, hard checking and thrills to get you excited and have an enjoyable evening. The fun starts with the scoreboard introduction and then Jim Cornelius lights up the place when he sings the Star Spangled Banner. The entire crowd gets into the action, not by singing but by cheering and you get goose bumps when you think how patriotic the crowd is. This is a must see team!!!

    training camp was a blast!

    by jenw628 on 9/20/09United Center - Chicago

i brought my two sons and they brought two friends. MY younger son ran the 5k which was awesome. Stan mikita opened which was a surprise. WE sat right on the glass for a practice session. Getting to be that close to the players was great. Kane threw his broken stick in the crowd and our friend caught it. We played some street hockey too. we returned in the evening for a great preseason game. Unfortunately the hawks lost. What a great day

Watching coach Q run practice was cool

by griller on 9/20/09United Center - Chicago

Overall, I would say it was a good experience. Only thing which would have made it better was more access to players for autographs.

It was a great experience for only $5.00!

    by blackhawksfamily1 on 9/20/09United Center - Chicago

My family and I had a wonderful time at the training camp! It was definitely worth the $5.00 we paid for the tickets! It was nice that the kids were guaranteed an autograph. The only thing is that I wish they had more kids activities outside. We will definitely come back next year!

    never die, move forward!

by dbanks on 7/21/09United Center - Chicago

There was a fire and electricity in the building that hasn't been there for a long time and was great to feel it again. Even though the game was a blow out and the wings took control of the series, the hawks played hard to the final buzzer and the rest of the series, as a fan that's all you can ask. Now with experience and a couple nice off-season moves this team will move forward and will be tough for a long time

    by rocco16 on 7/14/09United Center - Chicago

I have attended many sporting events including a first round Bulls playoff game this year, but it was no comparison to the fun and atmosphere. It was something that my six year old son will never forget!! I'm sure the Blackhawks have made a new lifelong fan.

    HAWKS!!!

by dannyisu on 7/14/09United Center - Chicago

Even though the Blackhawks got thumped by the Red Wings, nothing is better than a live Hawks game especially a playoff game. From the amazing and roaring Star Spangled Banner, to the final whistle, the game was action packed from beginning to finish. Nothing, and I repeat nothing, is more exciting than a Blackhawks home playoff game. It has been a very long time since I have experienced that and looking forward for many years ahead of going to more games with this fun and exciting young team. GO HAWKS!!!

    Chicago Blackhawks Rule

by DianeMB on 7/13/09United Center - Chicago

This Conference Final was the first playoff game for NHL hockey that I have ever been too. The crowd was so pumped and it was so exciting to see them play and even more so to be a part of a conference final playoff game. I would definitely recommend attending a playoff game to any hockey fan.
