Chicago Blackhawks History

The Chicago Blackhawks were founded in 1926 and were part of the Original Six group of franchises, which constituted the NHL from 1942 until league expansion in 1967. The club won Stanley Cup Championships in the 1933-1934 and 1937-1938 seasons, but success proved largely elusive over the next two decades, except for one appearance in the final in 1943-1944. The 1960s signaled a rebirth for the franchise, with future Hall of Famers Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull, Pierre Pilote, and Glenn Hall leading the way. The Blackhawks defeated the Detroit Red Wings in the 1961 Stanley Cup Final, collecting their third championship.

The addition of eventual Hall of Fame goaltender Tony Esposito ahead of the 1969-1970 season marked the start of an era during which the team earned a Playoff berth in 28 consecutive seasons. In 1971 and 1973 the Blackhawks reached the Stanley Cup Final, losing both times to the Montreal Canadiens. More excellence followed in the 1990s, aided by the likes of Ed Belfour and Jeremy Roenick, as the Blackhawks finished with the league's best record in 1990-1991 and made the Stanley Cup Final in 1991-1992.

By selecting their eventual captain Jonathan Toews third overall in the 2006 NHL Draft, the Blackhawks began stocking up on young talent, also adding Patrick Kane first overall the following year. They returned to the Playoffs in 2008-2009, and in the very next season, Chicago defeated the Philadelphia Flyers for their first Stanley Cup Championship in 49 years. They added championships in 2013—beating the Boston Bruins in a thrilling series that included three overtime games—and 2015, topping the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games.

Chicago Blackhawks at United Center

Home to the Chicago Blackhawks and Chicago Bulls, United Center(Opens in new tab)—which opened in 1994—is the largest NHL arena in the United States, with a capacity of 19,717 for hockey games. The idea for the arena was created in 1988 by William Wirtz, owner of the Chicago Blackhawks, and Jerry Reinsdorf, majority owner and Team Chairman of the Chicago Bulls. The United Center has hosted the Stanley Cup Finals three times: in 2010, 2013 and 2015. The Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup Championship in 2015 against the Tampa Bay Lightning at home in the sixth game—the first time since 1938 that the franchise clinched the Cup in Chicago.

  • Excellent pre-season event

by JakeP on 10/8/23United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Great event for Hawks fans. Seats allowed for high fives from players coming in and out of locker. Lots of kids rush to area but what can be better than that experience for a child?!?

  • Great

by Maurice on 10/8/23United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

What a great experience. This was our first time at an ice hockey match and we enjoyed the entire match and show

  • Great seats !

by Tink on 10/6/23United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Parking was easy and inexpensive . Less than a block walk to the entrance . No line at the concession stand but the prices were way to high . A mini pizza and plain hot dog and two small pops cost $32 . The pizza wasn’t bad for ten dollars but a ten dollar plain hotdog is ridiculous and then they try to sneak a tip in ! Our seats were right down the middle of the rink . First row of second level . Best seats in the place if ya ask me . The United center was very clean and well kept . Line for the ladies room moved quickly and the bathrooms were clean as well . Had a great time and will definitely be coming to more Blackhawks games ! Was able to get out of the parking lot in a reasonable amount of time . Very well organized facility.

  • First timer

by Kiwi in Chicago on 10/6/23United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Awesome fast game. A few dust ups to keep it really interesting. Great crowd entertainment. We Uber’d to and from the game. Unbelievably organised, seamless drop off/pick up. United centre Chicago is first class with their organisation and getting crowds moving quickly. Would definitely come here again .

  • Hawks-Wings pre-season

by Dave Wieser on 10/6/23United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Had a daddy-daughter night out with my 10 year old. Our seats were Row 2 behind the net so my daughter got to see an NHL slap slot up close during warm-ups. She said"it's so fun but terrifying all at once". Every time a puck would hit the glass she would jump. She got pictures of her favorite players during the game. Overall, a great night out.

  • Hispanic Heritage Night - Preseason Game

by Dragonfly on 10/6/23United Center - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

I am sad to give this review on Hispanic Heritage Night. I was disappointed to see this at this event it wasn't as great as it has been in previous years. No giveaways were given, not too many food choices as in prior years. Not that I just go for these items but because we love to support these events and the Blackhawks. On the other hand, the Preseason Game was an awesome game.

  • most on ICE seats were great!

by Joe on 10/1/23United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

We had third row seats from the ice, these seats were awesome it’s like you were right next to the players on the ice!

  • Concessions

by LAK on 10/1/23United Center - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Being at the United Center for a hockey is the best! My issue is with the concessions on the 2nd Level - All but one concession stand had me put my card in first, then they turned the pad around for me to sign and approve the 20% tip. One of the concession stands on the 2nd Level where we got ice cream and a cookie, made me sign first then they turned the pad around towards them had me put my card in and they proceeded to approve the order amount with the tip. I asked why was I signing it before I even see the total and put my card in, she said that's how it's supposed to be done. The default tip is at 20% which is totally fine, If I had the means I would do 100% tip. But I felt that she was doing it that way to guarantee a 20% tip.

  • DA HAWKS

by Lowkey on 3/17/23United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Amazing game. Hawks beat the hottest team in the world 6-3. I got tickets for standing room only for $35~ and the attendant allowed me to sit in an open seat in the 300 level which was awesome. Easy entry, easy exit, great event!

  • Blackhawks Winner

by Joe on 3/9/23United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

  • Good to win once in a while

by hayashi ryokan on 3/9/23United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

didn't know what to expect but as they say, a real fan will keep cheering weather on a winning or loosing streak. All this was made easier by the ticketing process and the atmosphere at the game

  • Moderately satisfied

by Iza on 3/5/23United Center - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

My experience was a bit dissapointing. Due to incompatibility with my cards, I could not buy anyrthing, either fan store items or food and drink. The setting and cheering without any energy. I prefer hockey games in Europe

  • Great Hockey Experience

Fabulous game...with a huge, engaged crowd and electric atmosphere despite the dismal record. Sure surprised the Leafs!

This Blackhawk game was the best game I was ever at and I have been to a lot of games!! Fans were awesome and staff was great!! The hot turkey sandwich at Goose Island was as amazing! We wanted to take one home!! Oh and Kaners hat trick was the icing on the cake!!

  • Music extremely loud but lively and game ended well for Me!

by hondo hunter on 2/13/23United Center - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

It was African American Day acknowledgement and many fans there were of color. Alot of music and their National Anthem and the US were played simultaneously. Enjoyed the game but not the price of a Mexican beer of $10.25 cents and then the guy looking for a tip? Really? I'm old at 70 plus and I'm always shocked by prices at these venues. Got a deal on parking of $20 for this Vietnam vet. Paid a whopping $550 for two tickets thru Ticketmaster for close seats, but many empty seats around, and based on the company I saw around me, many got in free, as it was their day! I live near Rockford so I can go to the Hogs game for a ton less than what you guys charge here. I had a cousin in from Sweden though, and he wanted to see a Hawks game, as somebody from his town in Hedemora had actually played for the Hawks a ways back. I accomadated him and drove him to Chicago, but after around a $600 price total for tolls/gas/parking/one beer//I'm going to say it will be a long time before you see this guy around there again, if ever..So..keep those prices up..not all will fall prey to it...Still Hawks gave a great performance and won 4 to 3 in overtime over the Coyotes. THAT WAS GREAT..

  • Was great memories
