Chicago Blackhawks History

The Chicago Blackhawks were founded in 1926 and were part of the Original Six group of franchises, which constituted the NHL from 1942 until league expansion in 1967. The club won Stanley Cup Championships in the 1933-1934 and 1937-1938 seasons, but success proved largely elusive over the next two decades, except for one appearance in the final in 1943-1944. The 1960s signaled a rebirth for the franchise, with future Hall of Famers Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull, Pierre Pilote, and Glenn Hall leading the way. The Blackhawks defeated the Detroit Red Wings in the 1961 Stanley Cup Final, collecting their third championship.

The addition of eventual Hall of Fame goaltender Tony Esposito ahead of the 1969-1970 season marked the start of an era during which the team earned a Playoff berth in 28 consecutive seasons. In 1971 and 1973 the Blackhawks reached the Stanley Cup Final, losing both times to the Montreal Canadiens. More excellence followed in the 1990s, aided by the likes of Ed Belfour and Jeremy Roenick, as the Blackhawks finished with the league's best record in 1990-1991 and made the Stanley Cup Final in 1991-1992.

By selecting their eventual captain Jonathan Toews third overall in the 2006 NHL Draft, the Blackhawks began stocking up on young talent, also adding Patrick Kane first overall the following year. They returned to the Playoffs in 2008-2009, and in the very next season, Chicago defeated the Philadelphia Flyers for their first Stanley Cup Championship in 49 years. They added championships in 2013—beating the Boston Bruins in a thrilling series that included three overtime games—and 2015, topping the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games.

Chicago Blackhawks at United Center

Home to the Chicago Blackhawks and Chicago Bulls, United Center(Opens in new tab)—which opened in 1994—is the largest NHL arena in the United States, with a capacity of 19,717 for hockey games. The idea for the arena was created in 1988 by William Wirtz, owner of the Chicago Blackhawks, and Jerry Reinsdorf, majority owner and Team Chairman of the Chicago Bulls. The United Center has hosted the Stanley Cup Finals three times: in 2010, 2013 and 2015. The Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup Championship in 2015 against the Tampa Bay Lightning at home in the sixth game—the first time since 1938 that the franchise clinched the Cup in Chicago.

  • 300 Corner Bars

    by Eace1017 on 1/16/24United Center - ChicagoRating: 1 out of 5

It’s sad the Blackhawks took over half the 300 corner bars. It was a great place to stand and watch the game with fans that actually still care. One section was occupied by a large drum that was used once at the beginning of the game. The other side was a small stage that was never used. In the other section there was a DJ and in game promotional games. Also used a few times. Our dozen games a year will probably shrink down to 2. Sad.

  • Great game

by Paul on 12/30/23United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

The game was the best I have seen in years. I wish when I downloaded my tickets to Apple wallet they could be used for entrance. The ticket master app is very difficult for entrance.

  • Live Game not televised match 🥲

by Mick Guinness on 12/30/23United Center - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

Purchased six ticket's to take Family here From Ireland to a live hockey match. Not a televised one. Sad how much they believe crowd must be entertained. Score board was really really overbearing. Ruining a solid game. And destroying the flow of game. Before match I was thinking of season tickets. But will pass until they return to actual hockey. Not a video game. Three stars only for the win or would be two.

by Bill on 12/26/23United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

A Very festive atmosphere at the UC for Christmas 2023 and the Blackhawks had a Great start to the Hockey game against the Montreal Canadians, but then fizzled out to a disappointing 5-2 loss!

  • Great Experience

    by RomekB1000 on 12/25/23United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Wonderful experience. Unexpected Christmas concert in the atrium with wonderful singers. Then Christmas carols on the grandest by Frank Pellico. It would be a better experience if food was available in the atrium while waiting to enter the stadium.

  • Amazing

The best live sporting event I’ve ever been to. So much constant action and excitement! Highly recommended for anyone who loves sports and having fun!

  • Hawks Game

    by Original6 on 12/25/23United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I absolutely loved watching the Hawks blow a 2-0 lead and give up 5 unanswered goals to the Habs at United Center!

  • Great experience!

Parking is easy, game is entertaining, leaving the United Center was a little slow but not unusual for major sporting event. Great experience!

by Bill on 12/21/23United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Great seats! I had a Great view of the players and the action on the ice. The Blackhawks put in a good effort. They didn’t quit, however,I was disappointed with the loss in the end!

  • Blackhawks

by Murph on 12/20/23United Center - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Had a ball at the game. Loved the light show. Even though they lost 4-3 against the Canucks it was still a good game. Only sad note is that the food and drinks are way too expensive. The people working the game were great all very helpful and nice.

  • Chicago Blackhawks

by Rachez on 12/20/23United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I love the energy of the game, fans, and players. Where else can you go that the majority of the fans will sing the National Anthem? I love that the players/team help with charities as well.

  • Awesome!

  • Too expensive

by JP on 12/10/23United Center - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

Not worth the money. Overcharged. Blackhawks did not perform.

  • Obstructed view on Center Ice

by DougW on 12/10/23United Center - ChicagoRating: 1 out of 5

The Blackhawks need to do something about the camera guys. Not the TV guys but the two ridiculous guys with actual snap and shoot cameras standing up in front of us for the entire game. You pay big money to sit in the 200s at center ice and then have to look at the back of their heads. No one needs these guys anymore. It's 2023. I asked the usher and there was nothing anyone was going to do for us. The Blackhawks owe us a pair of seats.

  • Undisclosed Obstruction

    by Eddy84711 on 12/6/23Rating: 1 out of 5

Sat in 201 row 5 seats 4/5. No site tells you there’s a cameraman right at the tunnel entrance that literally blocks the entire zone from the top of the circles down. I was shocked to see this considering the price of the seats. It’s a shame I can’t post a picture of the view here. STAY AWAY FROM 201 ROW 1-7ish on the lower numbered seats!

  • Blackhawks rebound in a win against the Seattle Kraken 4-3

by Bill on 12/2/23United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

3 Blackhawk games in 5 days after Thanksgiving 2023,Awesome!

  • Club Is Meh

by KLS on 11/30/23United Center - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

First, our seats were INCREDIBLE. Right behind the major network cameras, but row 7, so higher up with the railing right in front. Couldn't have asked for better placement. I don't know why they call these seats club. We had one lady, one time, come by and ask if we needed anything. I wouldn't consider that in seat service. Also, did you know club level in STL comes with fully free food, drinks, and alcohol for the same price? There are literally no perks of these seats other than where they are in the arena.
