Chicago Blackhawks History

The Chicago Blackhawks were founded in 1926 and were part of the Original Six group of franchises, which constituted the NHL from 1942 until league expansion in 1967. The club won Stanley Cup Championships in the 1933-1934 and 1937-1938 seasons, but success proved largely elusive over the next two decades, except for one appearance in the final in 1943-1944. The 1960s signaled a rebirth for the franchise, with future Hall of Famers Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull, Pierre Pilote, and Glenn Hall leading the way. The Blackhawks defeated the Detroit Red Wings in the 1961 Stanley Cup Final, collecting their third championship.

The addition of eventual Hall of Fame goaltender Tony Esposito ahead of the 1969-1970 season marked the start of an era during which the team earned a Playoff berth in 28 consecutive seasons. In 1971 and 1973 the Blackhawks reached the Stanley Cup Final, losing both times to the Montreal Canadiens. More excellence followed in the 1990s, aided by the likes of Ed Belfour and Jeremy Roenick, as the Blackhawks finished with the league's best record in 1990-1991 and made the Stanley Cup Final in 1991-1992.

By selecting their eventual captain Jonathan Toews third overall in the 2006 NHL Draft, the Blackhawks began stocking up on young talent, also adding Patrick Kane first overall the following year. They returned to the Playoffs in 2008-2009, and in the very next season, Chicago defeated the Philadelphia Flyers for their first Stanley Cup Championship in 49 years. They added championships in 2013—beating the Boston Bruins in a thrilling series that included three overtime games—and 2015, topping the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games.

Chicago Blackhawks at United Center

Home to the Chicago Blackhawks and Chicago Bulls, United Center(Opens in new tab)—which opened in 1994—is the largest NHL arena in the United States, with a capacity of 19,717 for hockey games. The idea for the arena was created in 1988 by William Wirtz, owner of the Chicago Blackhawks, and Jerry Reinsdorf, majority owner and Team Chairman of the Chicago Bulls. The United Center has hosted the Stanley Cup Finals three times: in 2010, 2013 and 2015. The Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup Championship in 2015 against the Tampa Bay Lightning at home in the sixth game—the first time since 1938 that the franchise clinched the Cup in Chicago.

    by Jx3069 on 3/16/18United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

First time at a hockey game so I figured why not get better tickets. Definitely a great & fun experience and well worth the money for center ice.

  • Blackhawks vs San Jose

by ASNYPE on 2/26/18United Center - ChicagoRating: 2 out of 5

For 100.00 seats in the 306 level row 14 seats 9-12 - the seats were so uncomfortable!!! My husband seat kept tilting because there was a crack in the floor. It was like he was sitting on my lap. We have been to MANY Blackhawk games, this was by far the biggest waste of money for the seats we had. So disappointing.

  • New format needed

by MrBigD on 2/18/18United Center - ChicagoRating: 2 out of 5

Hawks (again) but that's been the case for the past several games at the UC. Still, it was an entertaining game. What isn't entertaining is all of the sideshow stuff that goes along with Hawks games at the UC. Have the Hawks ever asked fans if they want little kids having obstacle races on the ice during intermission? Ok, giving fans t-shirts seems to get them excited. But a few times the staff were still shooting t-shirts into the crowd after play had started up again. I didn't buy a ticket to see people scramble over each for a t-shirt. Do we still need the Kiss Cam? Shoot the Puck between periods has lost its charm too, especially when the "celebrity" turns out to be someone you've never heard of. Why not take the whole intermission to re-surface the ice? Maybe then the ice wouldn't be so bad at the end of every period, as it currently is at the UC. Get rid of showing fans acting stupid in the stands. Again, I didn't buy a ticket to see fans dance, jump up and down or act crazy. It isn't cute.

  • Fantastic seats

    by Whit1002 on 2/9/18United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Fantastic seats to a lackluster game. Food and beer are superb

  • Hawks should stick to hockey

by MrBigD on 1/27/18United Center - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

Seeing an NHL game is always fun, no matter where the Hawks are in the standings or who they are playing. But what isn't fun is all the non-hockey crap that goes on at the United Center during Hawks games. It starts with the loud rock music that blasts throughout the building from the warm-up through every play stoppage. I am a rock fan and enjoy concerts at the UC. But I don't go to Hawks games for a rock concert. In the 300s, you can't even talk with the person sitting next to you unless you shout while the music is blaring. And get rid of the between periods circus. The shoot-the-puck game has become stagnant, as evidenced by "celebrity" shooters that no one has ever heard of. Take the whole intermission to resurface the ice and maybe it wouldn't be so bad at the end of every period. Make PA announcements of goals and penalties during a play stoppage not during play. Finally, stop playing Chelsea Dagger after the Hawks score. It's lost it's charm.

  • BLACKHAWKS VS LIGHTNING

by jonIEREB on 1/25/18United Center - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

THE BLACKHAWKS ARE BREAKING MY HEART. TOUGH TO BE A FAN, BRING HIS FAMILY OF 8, TO SEE THEM SHUT OUT AGAIN! NO CHELSEA DAGGER, NO BUZZER AGAIN, NO HIGHLIGHTS. AND ON A NIGHT THEY'RE GIVING AWAY TOEWS BOBBLEHEADS, AM I ALONE IN SAYING HE HAS LOST 2 STEPS? I HAVE HIS 2013 STANLEY CUP PICTURE ON DISPLAY IN MY OFFICE. I MEAN I REALLY ADMIRE HIM BUT HE IS IN DECLINE. AND HOW DISAPPOINTIN IS SAAD? OR SHOULD I SAY "SAD". YOU SEE THE LINES OF TOEWS/KANE/SAAD/SHARP/ KEITH/SEABROOK/ AND I THINK WE'RE LIVING IN THE PAST. WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE IS THE ADDITION OF RUSSIANS. OVECHKIN/ NIKITA KUCHEROV/ ET AL PLAY A DIFFERENT GAME. AND WE NEED A MORE PHYSICAL DEFENSE. WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU SAW A HAWK CRUSH SOMEONE INTO THE BOARDS? TOO MUCH UP AND DOWN AND PASSING WITHOUT SHOOTING. HURTS TO WATCH.

  • Blackhawk can't provide value.

by tezjr on 1/23/18United Center - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

Everything is expensive from parking to tickets. The value is not there.

My boys loved the game! Everyone was super friendly!!

  • Great hockey!

by Holmgren on 1/19/18United Center - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

I went to see Blackhawks vs Golden Knights. The atmosphere in the arena was superb with a fully charged audience. My seat: Section 315, row 9, seat 13 was better than expected which was a nice surprise! Yes, the ticket was indeed expensive. And yes, the hamburger with fries and a soda that I had was the most expensive fast food meal I've had to this date. But, I got an evening of really good , first-class hockey! Worth it!

  • Would rather watch the paint dry

by loanguy on 1/17/18United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Last game before a 5 day break and the Blackhawks played poorly. The UC was so quiet. Nothing to get excited about except a minor push with 10 minutes left in the 3rd period when the game was too far out of hand. What a waste of money! Really disappointed in the effort.

  • Disappointing game

    by HwkFn4life on 1/17/18United Center - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Was exciting to be at the game, but the end result was bad. They were shut out.

  • Hawks-United Center

by RailFail on 1/16/18United Center - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

I would highly recommend going to a Blackhawks game, love them. However the United Center has been a disappointment two times in a row now for me. For the Hawks game, I spent $125 per ticket and was seated in the very last row (folding chairs) of the very top level, no elevators or escalators with a rail directly at eye level blocking the view of the large center teleprompter and standing room only attendees standing over us. We also had a large man in front of us with a kid that stood the entire time. We saw nothing, we ended up watching the tv above us. I don't have a lot of money and this was supposed to be a very special mother son date night, what a disappointment. After the first period I even tried to go to the box office to see if I could pay to upgrade our tickets, and the box office was already closed, so that wasn't an option. I also attended a Bruno Mars concert at this venue and spent $250 A ticket and ended up sitting in the upper section behind the stage. This was my mother daughter date night. Bruno Mars is amazing, so we still had a great time, but be careful where your seats are, there are a lot of expensive tickets in very bad locations.

  • Blackhawks vs Wild

by WeLoveDarling on 1/15/18United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

We took advantage of the Cyber Monday ticket deal which was Standing Room Tickets for 25$ a piece. I went with my wife and son. The United Center is wonderful as always. The atmosphere was great. We were able to get to a place where we were able to see pretty well. Only bad thing: Hawks lost.
