Chicago Blackhawks History

The Chicago Blackhawks were founded in 1926 and were part of the Original Six group of franchises, which constituted the NHL from 1942 until league expansion in 1967. The club won Stanley Cup Championships in the 1933-1934 and 1937-1938 seasons, but success proved largely elusive over the next two decades, except for one appearance in the final in 1943-1944. The 1960s signaled a rebirth for the franchise, with future Hall of Famers Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull, Pierre Pilote, and Glenn Hall leading the way. The Blackhawks defeated the Detroit Red Wings in the 1961 Stanley Cup Final, collecting their third championship.

The addition of eventual Hall of Fame goaltender Tony Esposito ahead of the 1969-1970 season marked the start of an era during which the team earned a Playoff berth in 28 consecutive seasons. In 1971 and 1973 the Blackhawks reached the Stanley Cup Final, losing both times to the Montreal Canadiens. More excellence followed in the 1990s, aided by the likes of Ed Belfour and Jeremy Roenick, as the Blackhawks finished with the league's best record in 1990-1991 and made the Stanley Cup Final in 1991-1992.

By selecting their eventual captain Jonathan Toews third overall in the 2006 NHL Draft, the Blackhawks began stocking up on young talent, also adding Patrick Kane first overall the following year. They returned to the Playoffs in 2008-2009, and in the very next season, Chicago defeated the Philadelphia Flyers for their first Stanley Cup Championship in 49 years. They added championships in 2013—beating the Boston Bruins in a thrilling series that included three overtime games—and 2015, topping the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games.

Chicago Blackhawks at United Center

Home to the Chicago Blackhawks and Chicago Bulls, United Center(Opens in new tab)—which opened in 1994—is the largest NHL arena in the United States, with a capacity of 19,717 for hockey games. The idea for the arena was created in 1988 by William Wirtz, owner of the Chicago Blackhawks, and Jerry Reinsdorf, majority owner and Team Chairman of the Chicago Bulls. The United Center has hosted the Stanley Cup Finals three times: in 2010, 2013 and 2015. The Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup Championship in 2015 against the Tampa Bay Lightning at home in the sixth game—the first time since 1938 that the franchise clinched the Cup in Chicago.

  • Now a Tradition

by Joycietoad on 9/18/18United Center - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Everything mostly is great about the event. My daughter & granddaughter come in from out of town for it now, every year. The one thing we said we wished for during the scrimmage was an announcer telling us who was in goal (for instance). With so many new names in the scrimmage mix, most of the time we didn't know who was out there by just their number.

Very disappointed in the staff at the UC. What is usually a great experience was terrible from ticket scanning to the food vendors. Hoping it was just a fluke and will not be what the upcoming season will be like.

Great time had by all! Blackhawks really put on a fun time for their fans and show their appreciation for the loyalty!! Will be attending the training camps for many years to come!

  • Loved the Event - Hated the Line

    by Kristin06 on 9/18/18United Center - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

I attend the training festival every year but the line for entry this year was HORRIBLE. Wr arrived two hours prior to the doors opening to make sure we would get the limited edition bobble head. After standing in line for 90 minutes, the line started to move only for us to be directed into a separate & longer line that put us behind people who had just recently arrived. By the time we finally got to the doors they were out of the bobbleheads and we did not get good seats. I’m not sure why this year was so different but it was very disappointing considering we did everything we should have to be get early entry then got pushed to the back of thof line for an unknown reason.

Great family event and great, inexpensive way to see the Blackhawks in action on their home ice!

  • by Anonymous on 9/18/18United Center - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

great event, great activities, fabulous price. the only complaint is that the food counters never seem to be prepared, you will never not wait at least 20 mins in any line

  • Fun Family Day

    by Babe123456 on 9/18/18United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

We had a great time this year. This was our second time attending and it did not disappoint. I love that it's great for people of all ages. My adult children came with along with a coworker's young children and all of them had a great time. I think the Hawk's organization does a great job celebrating the fans and we really appreciate such a great day! We will definitely attend next year!

The entire Camp Festival experience is outstanding. A fun and inexpensive day with the Blackhawks. Only one negative all day. Audio VOLUME is WAY too loud. The music was very (too) loud and the Train horn after goals is ear bursting loud. We had to cover our ears. Please lower the volume of the music and horn.

  • Blackhawks are the best!

The Blackhawks are a first class organization!! Thank you so much!!!

  • they played a good game

    by Jojopay40 on 9/18/18United Center - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

Last year's training camp scrimmage was fun, they entertained the fans by tossing out t-shirts, there was a shootout, the old timers skated. unfortunately there was nothing spectacular this year. The united center staff did not entertain the fans, the only entertainment was the actual game.
