Chicago Blackhawks History

The Chicago Blackhawks were founded in 1926 and were part of the Original Six group of franchises, which constituted the NHL from 1942 until league expansion in 1967. The club won Stanley Cup Championships in the 1933-1934 and 1937-1938 seasons, but success proved largely elusive over the next two decades, except for one appearance in the final in 1943-1944. The 1960s signaled a rebirth for the franchise, with future Hall of Famers Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull, Pierre Pilote, and Glenn Hall leading the way. The Blackhawks defeated the Detroit Red Wings in the 1961 Stanley Cup Final, collecting their third championship.

The addition of eventual Hall of Fame goaltender Tony Esposito ahead of the 1969-1970 season marked the start of an era during which the team earned a Playoff berth in 28 consecutive seasons. In 1971 and 1973 the Blackhawks reached the Stanley Cup Final, losing both times to the Montreal Canadiens. More excellence followed in the 1990s, aided by the likes of Ed Belfour and Jeremy Roenick, as the Blackhawks finished with the league's best record in 1990-1991 and made the Stanley Cup Final in 1991-1992.

By selecting their eventual captain Jonathan Toews third overall in the 2006 NHL Draft, the Blackhawks began stocking up on young talent, also adding Patrick Kane first overall the following year. They returned to the Playoffs in 2008-2009, and in the very next season, Chicago defeated the Philadelphia Flyers for their first Stanley Cup Championship in 49 years. They added championships in 2013—beating the Boston Bruins in a thrilling series that included three overtime games—and 2015, topping the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games.

Chicago Blackhawks at United Center

Home to the Chicago Blackhawks and Chicago Bulls, United Center(Opens in new tab)—which opened in 1994—is the largest NHL arena in the United States, with a capacity of 19,717 for hockey games. The idea for the arena was created in 1988 by William Wirtz, owner of the Chicago Blackhawks, and Jerry Reinsdorf, majority owner and Team Chairman of the Chicago Bulls. The United Center has hosted the Stanley Cup Finals three times: in 2010, 2013 and 2015. The Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup Championship in 2015 against the Tampa Bay Lightning at home in the sixth game—the first time since 1938 that the franchise clinched the Cup in Chicago.

  • Great overall game experience!

by Freddy on 2/17/19United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I have been a big Blackhawks fan for many, many years. During the six years I lived in Chicago, I attended many games. Now I live in Switzerland and came to Chicago again to watch the Blackhawks playing against the New Jersey Devils. Good game, great show, great entertainment (also because of the 1000th NHL game of Chris Kunitz). Just one thing i did not like: the many (too many) interruptions during all three periods! Is this really necessary. Overall: a very special Hockey Night!!

The food is great. Big improvement with the new vendors. (Mrs Levys deli, Lillie Q's, Gibsons, Adult milkshakes). Freddie Mercury video was great. The crowd reacted to it like it was a live concert. My wife says the water in the women's 100 level restrooms is too cold.

  • You picked the seats

    by E. on 2/13/19United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I asked for best available seats and got level 2 sec 216. Now we are spoiled and can’t ever have anything but Club level again!

Glad I acted on this deal. And although the seats were in the top row of the 300 level, were able to get a great view of the entire rink. Really, no bad seats up here. Have been a lifelong fan. Awesome game!!! Great hat giveaway that night too, a real plus!!!

  • First NHL game

    by Zubee16 on 2/10/19United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I took my girlfriend to her first NHL game and her second time in 20 years to the United Center. We had a blast! Great seats and great view. I especially loved the offer that came with the tickets to tour the practice facility and included skating and food. Highly recommended. Thanks

Disappointed to find no vegetarian meal options on the third level. Cheese pizza? Veggie burger? Shouldn’t be hard. My vegetarian daughter ate nachos with fake cheese. Ug

We had a terrific time at the Hawks game on the 9th. The outcome of the game wasn't quite what we'd hoped for, but the experience was awesome. Good food choices, plenty of beverage choices. A lot of fun.

  • Nice place, good time!

    by K. H. on 12/30/18United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Great venue! Very nice fans consider we were the opposing team. As with all stadiums, all food and beverages were pricey. Chicago was a good experience for us girls!

  • breakup

by weims on 12/29/18United Center - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Seems like bowman is the problem and not head coach. I think stan bowman does not care and he is riding his dad's coattails. Coliton is not answer. Try to keep team together and not dump players. Crawford should retire. Assistant coach is bowmans buddy also.

  • Love going to a Blackhawks game!

by KMG on 12/22/18United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Thee is nothing like the experience of going to a game! All of the none stop entertainment that you don’t see on TV is so much fun and well orchestrated! Like any big event that draws a crowd, you have to be patient...but if you are there to have a good time, you won’t be disappointed....especially when the the Blackhawks win😉.

  • Way too expensive for the product on the ice...

by Zeus on 12/19/18United Center - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

Hawks games have always been a costly experience but you didn't mind as much when they were a competitive team. Now they are terrible(lost 7-3) and there was very little energy/excitement generated by the players. I'm paying top dollar for seats/food/drinks and Hawks management(Stan Bowman)has put an inferior team(again) on the ice. I will not be attending any more games this season(and I'm obviously not alone judging by the many empty seats we saw around us).
