Chicago Blackhawks History

The Chicago Blackhawks were founded in 1926 and were part of the Original Six group of franchises, which constituted the NHL from 1942 until league expansion in 1967. The club won Stanley Cup Championships in the 1933-1934 and 1937-1938 seasons, but success proved largely elusive over the next two decades, except for one appearance in the final in 1943-1944. The 1960s signaled a rebirth for the franchise, with future Hall of Famers Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull, Pierre Pilote, and Glenn Hall leading the way. The Blackhawks defeated the Detroit Red Wings in the 1961 Stanley Cup Final, collecting their third championship.

The addition of eventual Hall of Fame goaltender Tony Esposito ahead of the 1969-1970 season marked the start of an era during which the team earned a Playoff berth in 28 consecutive seasons. In 1971 and 1973 the Blackhawks reached the Stanley Cup Final, losing both times to the Montreal Canadiens. More excellence followed in the 1990s, aided by the likes of Ed Belfour and Jeremy Roenick, as the Blackhawks finished with the league's best record in 1990-1991 and made the Stanley Cup Final in 1991-1992.

By selecting their eventual captain Jonathan Toews third overall in the 2006 NHL Draft, the Blackhawks began stocking up on young talent, also adding Patrick Kane first overall the following year. They returned to the Playoffs in 2008-2009, and in the very next season, Chicago defeated the Philadelphia Flyers for their first Stanley Cup Championship in 49 years. They added championships in 2013—beating the Boston Bruins in a thrilling series that included three overtime games—and 2015, topping the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games.

Chicago Blackhawks at United Center

Home to the Chicago Blackhawks and Chicago Bulls, United Center(Opens in new tab)—which opened in 1994—is the largest NHL arena in the United States, with a capacity of 19,717 for hockey games. The idea for the arena was created in 1988 by William Wirtz, owner of the Chicago Blackhawks, and Jerry Reinsdorf, majority owner and Team Chairman of the Chicago Bulls. The United Center has hosted the Stanley Cup Finals three times: in 2010, 2013 and 2015. The Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup Championship in 2015 against the Tampa Bay Lightning at home in the sixth game—the first time since 1938 that the franchise clinched the Cup in Chicago.

Excellent Tickets are general admission need to get there like a hour and half early if you would like to receive a free bobbled head line gets long real quick

  • Fees

by NA on 9/18/19United Center - ChicagoRating: 1 out of 5

Fees are way too high to buy tickets. Wanted to go to more Blackhawks games but due to the outrageous fees I am only going to one game. ☹️

  • Great

Nice, wish the outdoor stuff hadnt been rained out

  • Improvements needed

by Amy on 9/18/19United Center - ChicagoRating: 2 out of 5

We have attended this event for the past 5 years and every year the concessions run out of food by the second period and this year was no different unfortunately. This year they ran out of "all sauces", pizza, and cheese for the pretzels and nachos. Of course you only find this out after you have waited in line for 20-30 minutes. Also, you are far more likely to have someone rude wait on you than someone who isn't.

  • Blackhawks Training Camp Festival

    by I. E. on 9/18/19United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Free Parking - General Admission - $5 - what else could you want! Arrived at 9:15 and in our seats by 9:45 - able to get seats on the Club Level. Great view of the scrimmage. Only issue is that it took an hour to stand in line to get food. Game was fun - great to see all the players!

  • Awesome

by Die hard hawks fan on 9/18/19United Center - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

The training camp festival was fun but the seating needs to in prove. The level 300 needed to be open right away or you should do assigned seats like at a game. Other then that to festival was fun. Also I am sorry it rained to have half of the festival canceled.

  • First timer

by Peg on 9/18/19United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I’ll definitely be returning next year!! Was my first time ever this year and it was soo much fun.

  • Not the best

by Smalls on 9/18/19United Center - ChicagoRating: 2 out of 5

You MUST be there long before opening in order to get a bobblehead and iur kids were so sad :( It rained that morning so a the kids events were cancelled, which was why we went. Almost every stand had tremendouly long lines in order to win a cheap kids prize and the food vendors ran out of fries throught the event. VERY poor planning altogether and this was the fourth Blackhaws training event weve attended. Won't be back... VERY disappointed.

  • Grandkids Day

by Jethro on 9/18/19United Center - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

  • Blackhawks

by Deborah on 9/18/19United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I love the Blackhawks hockey team and I am hoping that I can win some more tickets to the games and the convention next year in July

  • Disappointed

by Tim on 9/18/19United Center - ChicagoRating: 2 out of 5

With the outrageous concession prices and terrible food they at least should have had enough bobble heads for everyone. $4.95 for a bottle of water, c’mon!

  • Night out

    by M. D. on 4/9/19United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Without the Winter Classic discount offer I would never have been able to purchase the incredible 100 level seats for a night out with my daughter. She's 25 and that time together at a Hawk game is more special and harder to come by than ever.

  • Hawks Rule

by Bobbie on 4/8/19United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Bobby Hull was there signing. The Hawks won the game. It was the best.

  • Hawks beat the Blues

    by M. T. on 4/6/19United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

What a great night at the UC! Tony Esposito and his brother Phil we’re honored by The Hawks in their “One More Shift” program and The Hawks beat St. Louis in a shootout. The seats & atmosphere were fantastic (as most Hawks games are)! I only have one negative comment about sitting in the 100 level. You pay a lot to sit close to the action but there were a group of women sitting behind us that appeared to not know there was a game going on! They could have done the same thing at a bar, without paying the steep prices for tickets. Oh well, it was a bit irritating, however, they paid for their tickets (or someone else did), they can do whatever they choose. Regardless, it was a spectacular night! Let’s Go Hawks!!!!

  • Awesome time

    by S. L. on 4/4/19United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Just way tooo Expensive for the food and Drink very hard for a family to enjoy the time knowing a family not including the tickets is going to spend $500.00 plus that is CRAZY Expensive. Making these events only for the rich and not the working middle class to go and enjoy.

  • Family night

by Robbie on 4/4/19United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5
