Chicago Blackhawks History

The Chicago Blackhawks were founded in 1926 and were part of the Original Six group of franchises, which constituted the NHL from 1942 until league expansion in 1967. The club won Stanley Cup Championships in the 1933-1934 and 1937-1938 seasons, but success proved largely elusive over the next two decades, except for one appearance in the final in 1943-1944. The 1960s signaled a rebirth for the franchise, with future Hall of Famers Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull, Pierre Pilote, and Glenn Hall leading the way. The Blackhawks defeated the Detroit Red Wings in the 1961 Stanley Cup Final, collecting their third championship.

The addition of eventual Hall of Fame goaltender Tony Esposito ahead of the 1969-1970 season marked the start of an era during which the team earned a Playoff berth in 28 consecutive seasons. In 1971 and 1973 the Blackhawks reached the Stanley Cup Final, losing both times to the Montreal Canadiens. More excellence followed in the 1990s, aided by the likes of Ed Belfour and Jeremy Roenick, as the Blackhawks finished with the league's best record in 1990-1991 and made the Stanley Cup Final in 1991-1992.

By selecting their eventual captain Jonathan Toews third overall in the 2006 NHL Draft, the Blackhawks began stocking up on young talent, also adding Patrick Kane first overall the following year. They returned to the Playoffs in 2008-2009, and in the very next season, Chicago defeated the Philadelphia Flyers for their first Stanley Cup Championship in 49 years. They added championships in 2013—beating the Boston Bruins in a thrilling series that included three overtime games—and 2015, topping the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games.

Chicago Blackhawks at United Center

Home to the Chicago Blackhawks and Chicago Bulls, United Center(Opens in new tab)—which opened in 1994—is the largest NHL arena in the United States, with a capacity of 19,717 for hockey games. The idea for the arena was created in 1988 by William Wirtz, owner of the Chicago Blackhawks, and Jerry Reinsdorf, majority owner and Team Chairman of the Chicago Bulls. The United Center has hosted the Stanley Cup Finals three times: in 2010, 2013 and 2015. The Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup Championship in 2015 against the Tampa Bay Lightning at home in the sixth game—the first time since 1938 that the franchise clinched the Cup in Chicago.

I had the BEST time ever at the United Center for my very first Blackhawks home game. The staff was friendly and helpful, and the energy in the stadium was unlike any other. Also, this game was really one that should not have been missed. I can’t wait to experience another game!

  • Perfect trip to the game

    by Joe L on 1/8/20United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Bought the tickets through the mobile app. Had a couple of email reminders that the event was coming (not that we needed them). Day of the game was a rapid check-in using my Apple wallet. The lines getting in to United Center went very quickly and the ticket verification was speedy. Now if only we could do something about the team.....

  • Perfect experience

United Center and the Blackhawks did not disappoint! We traveled from Kansas to Chicago only for the January 5, 2020 game. What an experience to watch Chicago and Detroit in the United Center!

  • I came to see hockey, not a Vegas show

    by Big D on 12/21/19United Center - ChicagoRating: 2 out of 5

When I buy a ticket to see a Hawks game, it's because I like hockey. I don't need loud music played from the moment the players hit the ice for warm-up through every play stoppage. The music even "leaks" into the play of the MC doesn't turn it off soon enough after the puck drops and play resumes. I don't need Kiss Cam. I don't need two "hosts" trying to provide entertainment. The game is the entertainment I paid for. I don't need t-shirts dropping from the UC rafters while fans get into fights trying to snag one. I don't need to know players' favorite song, color, food, etc. I don't need models on skates and wearing costumes to scrape the ice. Yes, the ice needs to be cleaned. Just do it and get on with the game. I don't need a parade of Armed Services veterans before and during the game. Yes, we should honor the military. But hockey and the military don't mix, especially when you consider that most of the players aren't from the US anyway. Just give me good hockey if you want me to buy Hawks tickets.

  • Love Blackhawks games!

by KMG on 12/21/19United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

We had a great time.... even though the Hawks lost😣. Well organized, love the constant entertainment aspect. Our seats on the Club level were great (although we are not big people) seats are a bit tight (like all venues).... Good food choices.... but $10 for two waters is a bit steep. All in all..... a great experience!

  • Not even stadium seats

    by :/ on 12/18/19United Center - ChicagoRating: 2 out of 5

The game itself was a lot of fun, but I did not expect to be sitting on a fold-out chair in the middle of the aisle. I was expecting normal stadium seat that everybody sits on during the game. There was a rail right in front of us too, so we had to physically keep standing up and sitting down in order to see what was happening during the game.

  • Chicago Blackhawks the Real Deal

    by Jaime P. on 11/29/19United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Best sporting event ever! The fans were so dedicated. The stadium was electric & the hockey was so fast, fun, and exciting. We never sat back in our seats! We couldn’t! It was too exciting to relax for even a second. We will be going back to hockey again. By far the best in-person professional sport to see! Hockey is great on tv but nothing compared to in-person!

  • Ken and Donna's Excellent Adventure

by Hoser Eh! on 11/13/19United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Attended the Veterans Day hockey classic between my favourite Toronto Maple Leafs and my second favourite Chicago Black Hawks at the United Centre (Madhouse on Madison!) on Sunday November 10th, 2019 with my wife Donna who's from Elk Grove. After moving here from Hamilton, Ontario in July of 2012 this is the first Leafs/Hawks game we've attended. So much fun, the parking was excellent, lot B directly North of our gate, gate 2. Sat in Section 328, Row 17, seats 17 and 18. Saw lots of Leafs jerseys and had nothing but friendly banter back and forth with Hawk fans, most respectful which is how it should be, especially between 2 original 6 teams. Even though the Leafs lost 5-4 it was an excellent game, Hawks up 4-1 after the first but my Buds made it a close game. Definitely want to make this an annual tradition with my wife to see these 2 teams play. She wore her Kane jersey # 88 and Hawks toque and I wore my regulation Wendell Clark jersey # 17 'C' captains jersey complete with rear tie down and my Leafs toque. Can't wait to do it again next year!

  • Great atmosphere

Awesome experience, just make sure you have a solid ride there and back, as that is an issue

  • First NHL Game: One of the best live sporting events ever!

by Southern Rookie on 11/10/19United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first NHL experience and it did not disappoint. Where I live the college experience is second to none and I handle sports marketing for my job. The Blackhawks organization really understands the fan experience. The stadium experience was perfect! Clean, efficient, not packed in like sardines, and the concessions were well marked, clean, and quick. The game experience was off the charts. The center scoreboard was creative and well managed and the stadium lighting was a well directed symphony. I will definitely be back. Loved it!

  • Great stadium!
