Chicago Blackhawks History

The Chicago Blackhawks were founded in 1926 and were part of the Original Six group of franchises, which constituted the NHL from 1942 until league expansion in 1967. The club won Stanley Cup Championships in the 1933-1934 and 1937-1938 seasons, but success proved largely elusive over the next two decades, except for one appearance in the final in 1943-1944. The 1960s signaled a rebirth for the franchise, with future Hall of Famers Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull, Pierre Pilote, and Glenn Hall leading the way. The Blackhawks defeated the Detroit Red Wings in the 1961 Stanley Cup Final, collecting their third championship.

The addition of eventual Hall of Fame goaltender Tony Esposito ahead of the 1969-1970 season marked the start of an era during which the team earned a Playoff berth in 28 consecutive seasons. In 1971 and 1973 the Blackhawks reached the Stanley Cup Final, losing both times to the Montreal Canadiens. More excellence followed in the 1990s, aided by the likes of Ed Belfour and Jeremy Roenick, as the Blackhawks finished with the league's best record in 1990-1991 and made the Stanley Cup Final in 1991-1992.

By selecting their eventual captain Jonathan Toews third overall in the 2006 NHL Draft, the Blackhawks began stocking up on young talent, also adding Patrick Kane first overall the following year. They returned to the Playoffs in 2008-2009, and in the very next season, Chicago defeated the Philadelphia Flyers for their first Stanley Cup Championship in 49 years. They added championships in 2013—beating the Boston Bruins in a thrilling series that included three overtime games—and 2015, topping the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games.

Chicago Blackhawks at United Center

Home to the Chicago Blackhawks and Chicago Bulls, United Center(Opens in new tab)—which opened in 1994—is the largest NHL arena in the United States, with a capacity of 19,717 for hockey games. The idea for the arena was created in 1988 by William Wirtz, owner of the Chicago Blackhawks, and Jerry Reinsdorf, majority owner and Team Chairman of the Chicago Bulls. The United Center has hosted the Stanley Cup Finals three times: in 2010, 2013 and 2015. The Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup Championship in 2015 against the Tampa Bay Lightning at home in the sixth game—the first time since 1938 that the franchise clinched the Cup in Chicago.

  • Changes

by Hawkeytown on 11/12/21United Center - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

The game and staff were great. I did not like changes of no ice girls and no hand outs upon entering. Those made the day in the past. I dont know why they made these changes but im sure others feel same way that i do.

  • Good time at United Center.....

  • The Hawks need a new coach

by PSquared on 10/25/21United Center - ChicagoRating: 1 out of 5

Parking and entrance was smooth and eventless. The Blackhawks that's a different story. It's time to replace the losing coach and get back on the winning side of the schedule.

  • Pretty unhappy fan

by DHall on 10/24/21United Center - ChicagoRating: 2 out of 5

The new rule about “no purses” needs to be readdressed. In our recent Blackhawks game, it made the evening very uncomfortable as I had minimal items in all my pockets. Woman need to carry a small bag, it’s simple rules of nature. I will not be coming back for a game until that is rule is changed. If theft is an issue, the arena needs to hire better people for that. If it’s COVID related, it’s been proven germs aren’t found of surfaces. At the end of the day, a room full of men clearly are behind this putting such a dumb rule in place and this needs to be addressed.

  • Good to back at United Center...

  • B-hawks v Wild

by BHawkTI on 10/13/21United Center - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Great event/game. Concessions were incredibly understaffed and service so slow, I never purchased anything, and not for lack of effort or desire. Hire more people, take cash.

  • Great game and venue

  • First Blackhawks Game

    by Linda1980 on 3/11/20United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

We got there as soon as the United Center opened. Quick service through security. We stopped at a fan store to buy a sweatshirt. The ladies there were very helpful and nice. The United Center is just an awesome place. Clean and well maintained. Many food and drink options available. The game was great (even though they didn't win) lots of music and activity. I would highly recommend attending a game. It's great for families. Uber dropped us off right up front and then to leave, we went to the Uber pickup building.

  • We just had standing room only, but really good experience.

    by S. S. on 3/11/20United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Standing room only mid ice with bar and restrooms nearby. Very good experience all the way around for our first Blackhawks game!

  • Obstructed view!

by Gail on 2/22/20United Center - ChicagoRating: 2 out of 5

When I purchased 2 tickets for the Blackhawk/Ranger game, I didn't know that I wouldn't have any viewing of of 1/6th of the arean - particularly the area from the too of the circle to the back of the goal, so we missed every goal on one end and the set up to get a goal. Those tickets should be required to say obstructed view. We had the camera feed area next to and slightly in front of our seats so no one would ever see anything. They should give us new tickets to a Blackhawk Ranger game next year. Really annoyed at the fortune of money spent to see one end of the ice.

  • Ranger’s

by Noreen on 2/22/20United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

My husband is from Brooklyn and loves the Rangers so every year I buy tickets to really good seats for the Black Hawks vs Rangers game. We each wear our team sweaters and cheer for our favorite teams. This year we had great seats in Section 113 Row 3 and it was great to see The Breadman again. It was great game but too bad the Black Hawks lost!

  • Missing parking lot
