Chicago Blackhawks History

The Chicago Blackhawks were founded in 1926 and were part of the Original Six group of franchises, which constituted the NHL from 1942 until league expansion in 1967. The club won Stanley Cup Championships in the 1933-1934 and 1937-1938 seasons, but success proved largely elusive over the next two decades, except for one appearance in the final in 1943-1944. The 1960s signaled a rebirth for the franchise, with future Hall of Famers Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull, Pierre Pilote, and Glenn Hall leading the way. The Blackhawks defeated the Detroit Red Wings in the 1961 Stanley Cup Final, collecting their third championship.

The addition of eventual Hall of Fame goaltender Tony Esposito ahead of the 1969-1970 season marked the start of an era during which the team earned a Playoff berth in 28 consecutive seasons. In 1971 and 1973 the Blackhawks reached the Stanley Cup Final, losing both times to the Montreal Canadiens. More excellence followed in the 1990s, aided by the likes of Ed Belfour and Jeremy Roenick, as the Blackhawks finished with the league's best record in 1990-1991 and made the Stanley Cup Final in 1991-1992.

By selecting their eventual captain Jonathan Toews third overall in the 2006 NHL Draft, the Blackhawks began stocking up on young talent, also adding Patrick Kane first overall the following year. They returned to the Playoffs in 2008-2009, and in the very next season, Chicago defeated the Philadelphia Flyers for their first Stanley Cup Championship in 49 years. They added championships in 2013—beating the Boston Bruins in a thrilling series that included three overtime games—and 2015, topping the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games.

Chicago Blackhawks at United Center

Home to the Chicago Blackhawks and Chicago Bulls, United Center(Opens in new tab)—which opened in 1994—is the largest NHL arena in the United States, with a capacity of 19,717 for hockey games. The idea for the arena was created in 1988 by William Wirtz, owner of the Chicago Blackhawks, and Jerry Reinsdorf, majority owner and Team Chairman of the Chicago Bulls. The United Center has hosted the Stanley Cup Finals three times: in 2010, 2013 and 2015. The Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup Championship in 2015 against the Tampa Bay Lightning at home in the sixth game—the first time since 1938 that the franchise clinched the Cup in Chicago.

Was easy to pick the seats and understand what you were spending. Easy to get into the stadium with the mobile passes. Highly recommend and will do them again.

    by Ederpartyof6 on 3/6/22United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

What a great night back at the Madhouse. My first return since Covid hit and what a night! Incredible tribute for Hjalmarsson on legacy night - thunderous welcome back for our fave Duncan Keith plus Toew’s first game back! I got chills during the National Anthem and enjoyed the best food options of any Chicago sports arena or field BY FAR! Add the OT win and it was a perfect night.

by Star on 1/24/22United Center - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

It was freezing in the expensive section I was in. The air blew sooo cold. Minnesota played well, hawks were sleeping. Going to a game and spending a lot of money shd b an enjoyable experience. Disappointed.

by Tim on 1/18/22United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

  • Dream Come True

by Gina St. on 1/18/22United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I am a longtime, huge fan of the Blackhawks, but sadly I live far from Chicago (Idaho). My husband surprised me with a trip to see the Blackhawks play. It was everything I expected and more! I had terrific seats, I experienced the Star Spangled Banner in person, and got to sing Chelsea Dagger with the crowd more than once! The food was terrific, and the atmosphere was so much fun. I can’t wait to do it again!

  • Great time. Friendly hosts for the most part.

by Troy Ackman aka Orange on 1/16/22United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Great venue. I only get there a couple of times a year but top notch UC.

  • Poor directions

by Johnny on 1/16/22United Center - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

I bought the parking pass it did not give directions and the lots were not marked. All it told was South lots. There are many South lots. What street? Which building? Lots of time driving around, turning around. No people directing traffic knew. All the would say was “Not here!” I have been going to games for fifty years when on street parking was allowed. Would have been nice to have clear directions.

  • Good hockey game

by Jeff on 1/7/22United Center - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

My seats were obstructed by the camera man. I was not told there might be a problem seeing the whole hockey rink.

  • Loved it

    by J. T. on 1/5/22United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

  • The Hawks are playing like the old Blackhawks !

by Joe Hockey 63 on 12/2/21United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

The Hawks Vs the Sharks was exciting from start to finish!

  • Concessions need help

by PW on 12/1/21United Center - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Good time except the concession stands. I noticed that several stands were not fully open and one on 3rd level is closed. I ordered a burger at the stand located near 313 and only one register was open on each side. The older man operating the register seemed confused on how to operate it causing a backup ordering. While waiting I observed 5 people behind the counter with two of them continuing talking to each other ignoring the customers. Seems like service has gone down since the beginning of the season.

  • Credit card was compromised while at the game

by Justjash on 12/1/21United Center - ChicagoRating: 1 out of 5

Bring cash, my credit card was compromised while I was at United center, had a call from my bank shortly after the game and had to cancel my card.

  • ALMOST GREAT

    by M. K. on 11/16/21United Center - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

ONLY PROBLEM WAS THE PARKING. BOUGHT ADVANCE PARKING AND MY TICKET SAID WAS LOCATED IN "LOT X1" EXCEPT AT THE UC THERE IS NO "LOT X1". SPENT 20 MINUTES TEXTING EVERYTHING BUT THE NAME OF MY 6TH GRADE TEACHER IN AN ATTEMPT TO FIND OUT WHERE "LOT X1" WAS LOCATED AND NEVER DID. PARKING LOT ATTENDANT AT THE UC CLEARED IT ALL UP IN ABOUT 20 SECONDS.

  • Win Win and one area to improve

by MAC on 11/12/21United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

    1) Hawks had to work for the win 2) Great to see a celebration of the Native American Nation. Need to see more! 3) The volume of the music has to be up at 250dB!!!!! This volume level restricts conversations, shakes the building, pounds in your chest and causes hearing loss and deafness. Let the fans be the volume and turn down the music.

  • Good experience

    by ajtornado1 on 11/12/21United Center - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

It was a good experience but not the first time I've been to the United Center. I love the game and the Blackhawks but I hate the masks. They also use to seel programs for the games and they fidnt and that sucks. I like the programs and the little posters that came inside them. Please bring them back.
